It's really strange on the nose but I like the saltiness on the palate

Quick hit review. Back to one of my favorite distilleries, this expression matured in ex-bourbon casks. The nose is mineral and briny, unfolding with vanilla, dried herbs and vegetal peat smoke. On the palate, spicy-dry and peaty flavors compete with sugar-coated, zesty and citric notes, all very pleasing and well-measured. Squeezed lemon, ginger and whiffs of peat linger in the long finish. If only these bottles were still available at reasonable prices! RATING: 4.2/5.0 stars ≙ 89 pts → FIRST-CLASS [+]
I claimed one of my recent purchases to be "without any joy". This is full of it!. Evolving from start to finish in a behaved manner, still playfull and lively.

,8% is not revealed by the nose, very soft and gentle. Quite "Springbanky", if that's a term, earth/soil/mineral/farm is present. Something close to a horse stable with a smoky undertone. I can't detect much peat, but it's a lot more "musky" than the standard 10YO. Slightly salty, but also quite a bit of honey sweetness. Old greased mechanical machinery. Touch of fruit and with time in the glass a bourbony vanilla emerge. |

Pleasant Springbank, mineraly, fruity, not excessively smoky / peat.
N- Savoury salted butter, grilled citrus, grapefruits with drop of sulphur in the mix. Sharp penetrating citrus and juicy tropical fruits to pleased. Then overcast by dirty side of distant smokes, dirty vanilla and engine oil. Mint underlay. (89/22) P- Oily coconut, herbs and mix spices. Salts always in the gene for SB, subtly sweet with bitter leather nuance in the middle, peppery and fiery as it goes. (87/21) F- Long, mint and peppery with surge of spices and oak at the tail. As good as always from generic SB, but not more. (87/21) Body / Balance:- 88/22. Fresh and Refill BB for 9000 bottles releases, approx 45 brls vatted to this. Clean In 2004 a 12 years old Springbank – distilled in 1991 – was launched in a so-called Wood Expressions series. For that particular release, you’ll fork over 300 to 400 EUR today. But in 2017 Springbank launched a new bourbon wood expression – albeit distilled in 2002 and thus 14 years old when bottled – which can still be found. There were 9.000 bottles at cask strength. It’s a vatting of fresh and refill bourbon barrels. Oh, yes, this is typical Springbank. Diesel, vanilla, lemon, chestnut, hessian sacks, chalk, overripe pear, icing sugar and a couple of drops of brackish water. Very clean and inviting. It starts very sweet – pineapple cubes, oranges, mango and a hint of banana. Then caramel, sea salt and grapefruit follow and the whole turns nicely smoky. The palate offers more than the nose promised. Becomes rather intense and very good. It actually turns rather tropical in the wonderfully long finish. Think grapefruit, banana and mango. And it remains nicely peaty. Delicious. Textbook example of what Springbank on bourbon should taste like. Balsy.

Crazy how similar this seems to the regular 10-year-old, just with a bit more mouthfeel / texture due to the higher ABV, and a more pronounced finish due to the higher age. If you like pure, unadulterated Springbank that still has a sense of raw power but also a polished edge from some good casks, this one's for you.

Bites the nostrils without water – not ideal. Needs time and/or water to really get going. But then it's excellent. Dirty, greasy, grimy, oily, petroly, smoky, weirdly vegetal Springbank from active, rich, creamy and sweet ex-bourbon casks. Really well done. |

What can you say? It's very pure, like the 10-year-old, but with more chewiness, more body. Plus some straw and honey from the fresh bourbon casks that you usually don't get in the 10 y.o. |

The smoke, the cask, the spirit – it's all in there equally, nothing dominates. Of course it goes out ultra-dry and tart, as is typical of SB. Pepper, spice, smoke, citrus... To my taste, it's still a bit rough-and-tumble, even at 14 years of age. There's an alcoholic touch, a weirdly boozy feel that I don't love. I guess I would've loved to taste this at around 20 years of age, but that's not a criticism as such. |

first and second fill bourbon nose, thus sweetness and fruitiness (yellow fruits), which gets more refined the more the dram breathes, with peat peat peat but less smoke that reminds me a bit of Bowmore Vintages since 2000 and that’s a very good thing. Some samples (empty) of Bowmore handfills come to mind with I would love to compare head to head but can’t. Even some bandages appear. |

Nose: sour milk, vanilla, coconut rasp, minty tingling alcohol, fresh sour fruit (green apples), heather, some salt and musty smoke Taste: strong, milky sweet, creamy vanilla, again musty smoke (a little cowshed), a hint of licorice and oak. Great taste and now slightly weaker finish remains a honey-sweet back which is accompanied by some smoke, mineral tart notes and oak. Tried as a blind sample. I had this whisky in my glass about 4 years ago and I am pleased that today I can give it 88 to 89 points again blind and that the classification is more or less correct. It's exactly between 88 and 89 points. It's too good for 88 points. Too clean for more than 90 points. But in its simplicity it is really good. You can feel the quality, despite the mediocrity.

Odor: This unique Campbeltown Malt captivates with its ever-present creaminess. From vanilla notes to salted popcorn to donuts, the range of aromas of this 14-year-old Springbanks reaches. Taste: The creaminess continues on the palate, accompanied by honey and syrup. These are complemented by fine apple notes, almonds and dried bananas. Finally, a little citronate and lemon zests are added. Departure: A gentle ocean breeze from the Campeltown Loch mixes with some smoke and dry peat. Salty, slightly mineral notes complete this excellent dram (Whisky-whisky.ch)
For me a somewhat atypical spring bench, which a little air does quite well. Always an exciting candidate for blind tasting.
A thoroughly flawless malt, a wonderfully classic ex-bourbon ripening. Great malt, as you can hardly find it in the mountains of the countless sherry malts. Could be a bit more complex, but you get what you need for your money (75 €). Highly Recommended!

What a gorgeous clean and playful bourbon cask Springer! Being a distillery/distillate which works well with all sorts of cask maturations - the two most prominent being ex-bourbon and sherry which most bottlings contain a mixture of - this one displays no off notes to me, contrary to some recent 12 yo cs, as well as Haselburns, that were partly matured in ex-sherry casks and can't hide that to the sulphur-sensitive maltster, unfortunately. Theoretically this could even be a regular bottling as it's not too fancy after all. I for once would be a strong proponent. :-)

Not very good, although the nose is wonderfully fruity. After I knew what is was, it didn't surprise me. It's just as underwhelming to me as most 18-yo+ Springbank expressions. Tasted a sample on day six of the US Blind Tasting Competition 2017. My guess was a Clynelish 14-yo @ 53%. I thought it was a Highland whisky because of the saltiness.
Springbank 14YO Bourbon Wood, 55,8%, meets with light smoke, a little bit perfume, sweet fruits, old leather, sea salt, duchess pear notes on nose. Peaty, citric, spicy with good influence of oak cask and duchess pear on taste. The long finish appears with spicy notes, duchess pear and a little bit peaty smoke. I like this light peaty with strong duchess pear whisky!
A very homogeneous thing. Super soft and oily, actually "chewy". Wonderfully honey sweet with a subtle salty sea breeze! Great!

My only post-tasting note for this was “Delicious”. Not your run-of-the-mill Springbank, but it’s still a very good dram. Reviewed in my blog: https://iwriteaboutstuffilike.com/2017/12/12/springbank-14-bourbon-wood-btc-06/
this is a spirit that i took time before putting thoughts on screen.. i sipped on it several nights before i could decide if it is really enjoyable or “merely” intriguing. and now i can say that not only does it win the prize for originality (although remaining a pure-bred Springbank expression), but makes for a very entertaining sipper, too. nose is fine, with a very strong green apple note followed by leather, freshly dug earth, smoke and a hint of peach.. but it is on the palate that the spirit literally explodes in a myriad of taste sensations circling a leather & tobacco heart of dirty, dunnage darkness.. how can you not appreciate that, Mr. Palindrome? Finish is dry, smoky and simple.. a working-class Ardbeg, i’d say. A very memorable experience indeed. And every dram that breaks the ‘memorable’ level goes over the 90 mark in my little corner of whiskybase.

To flip or not to flip, that's the question. I got this bottle as a present from one of our sons, who studied at that time in Stirling, and bought this at 55 GBP. Given the fact that he was on a low budget, I considered this a great present. No way I was going to flip this one; instead, I opened when I turned 60. Our sons were at the table and my whisky mates got a free sample after the garden party.

Well, this bottling had a lot of potential for the purist, but alas the bourbon cask wood used was obviously bedraggled. Yes, we are likely talking about casks that were far from "fresh" bourbon (well, maybe one in the bunch to impart a vanilla finish). I find the description of "fresh and refill bourbon" to be a bit of a stretch. We're talking a 9000 bottle yield, after all. None of those casks were leaky or prone to sharing too much with angels, mind you. The ABV is plenty high for 14 years. The wood was just plumbed tuckered out. Nose: Dunage warehouse, old tired wood, vanilla, touch of sulfur, unripe orchard fruits, hemp rope, raw eggs, dark chocolate. Palate: Bovine methane, a touch of peat, old tired wood, pond scum (as in green algae), citrus, ginger. Finish: Medium in length, more cow effluvium, mud, funk, vanilla. This farmy, dank, funky, stanky dram would have been much better with more in the way of FRESH bourbon wood, instead of last call for alcohol beaters that are a bit long in the tooth and on their last leg. I could use this dram as a litmus test for "taste." Literally. If anyone goes on and on about its virtues. . . . Even Serge's 87 makes me feel nostalgic. In the good ole days, he would have shredded this bottle. Although, in all fairness, he kind of does shred it a little, despite his generous score: "You're also chomping on cactus leaves and burnt broccoli." Then again, Serge liked the broccoli note of a more recent Jura Chap 7. I didn't have the nerve to pull the trigger on that Jura, even though it sounded intriguing. Do I regret buying this Springbank? No, but I regret taking the time to find one. Although in all fairness, it wasn't all that hard to find. For a limited release, quite a few bottles were floating around for a while with no takers. Until lockdowns took care of that problem (bored thirsty mouths with ample surfing time).

For all the bourbon barrels, Genting's peculiar salt taste is almost impossible to drink. I just drank 3ml and let the young lady next to me try it, but it dried directly, so the wine review is for reference only.
When one of my mates celebrated his 60th birthday he chose this Springbank to celebrate this milestone. I was given a complimentary sample afterwards. A Springbank matured in fresh and refill bourbon barrels. How they should be. So I expect to be up for a threat. At first lots of fruits to be found - limes, mandarines, pineapples and passion fruits. Like a fresh summery and fruity cocktail. Really good. Sweet vanilla syrup. Added in those recognisable aromas of salt, minerals, and wet stones. Complemented by some grease, dry peat and fresh dried green spices. What a whisky. Excellent choice of barrels, all delivered at perfect drinking strength. Recommended!
He is more restrained than expected, even with a lot of time he gives his aromas only slowly price. Light grapes, limes, vanilla with some marshmallow, damp straw and a little breeze of sea air. Smoke is indeed heard, but only discreetly in the background. The restrained nature of the nose, it loses its taste and presents itself as stronger. A slight saltiness is to be heard, again light grapes, some caramel, the smoke is now much more present. Dryness and a mineral mouthfeel spreads. Medium long but pleasantly warming is the finish, damp, scorched wood remains in the mouth.

Nose: Typical mordern Springbank, lot like the new 10 but lighter because the lack of Sherry caks. The tropical fruitiness reminds me of Bowmore 2001 vintages. Finish: Again not very complex but it is longer then I expected for a 14 y old whisky. Total score: 90,88,90 I like the 10 little bit better because that one is more complex, but this a very good naked Springbank form the 2000's. vintage.

An excellent bottling that nicely shows the focal point character of Springbank.

Closed without water. The high alcohol content stings something in the nose - water is good for the whisky. With water: Very fragrant, with the typical Springbank smoky notes. In this case a little less the cowshed than rather going in a slightly phenolic direction. Strong spice, mineral notes (wet stone) and freshly mown hay. Sweet pastry notes with a bit of malt and caramel in the background complete the smoky notes perfectly. With time maybe a light citrus note, the fruit notes described in the other reviews, but I do not think so. |

Oily, creamy, very sweet, very spicy and very aromatic. The alcohol occurs vigorously and tingles in the mouth. Malty pastries. Now light smoke and ash notes are added. Ample oakwood spiciness and slight bitterness. Extremely delicious. |

Medium long to long, creamy with dark chocolate, subtle citrus notes and smoky spiciness |
Bourbon storage can be so cool, unfortunately a bit expensive for my taste.
Such complexity! Such diversity and versatility! An absolutely fantastic whisky. Not one of the flavors hit you in the face like a peatmonster or sherrybomb would, but rather everything is suggested and beautifully balanced out, while at the same time the palate is a dance of smell and taste, with flavors intertwined, but without pushing one another to the background. A whisky you need to work on (in a positive way) and one that deserves a warmed up palate. A 90 points cracker!
A standard Springbank, but standard is wonderful.

A nice everyday dram. Nothing too complex, it's easy, sweet, alcohol well integrated. Wouldn't give more than 70€ for it.

Compared to the 2024 Springbank 10yo CS, the bottle was too sealed immediately after opening; it needed time to open (give him 40 minutes). After sitting for 40 minutes, the taste did improve, but it wasn't particularly outstanding. I think it's a mild version of Yunting.

Freshly opened: Mild iodine, seaweed, the aroma isn't overpowering. After resting in a lemon peel glass for 40 minutes: Structure, yellow fruits, a hint of pineapple, not bad, a light and refreshing fruity scent. |

Upon opening: Very bourbon, malty, lightly sweet, with some iodine. You can feel the distinctive style of Genting, very full-bodied, but the overall flavor expression is not very specific. Instead, it's a light sweetness with citrus and malt notes, very "clean"? Aerated for 40 minutes: Soft, the fruit flavors are more clearly expressed, citrus, honeydew melon, light sweetness, becoming increasingly rich, with a pleasant fruity aftertaste (but the fruit flavor expression is not as high as I expected). A very balanced taste, neither good nor bad. |

Freshly opened: Medium, slightly salty, some structure, not a very appealing taste. After 40 minutes of steeping: Medium-long, very mild, very light, with a hint of sweet citrus. |

Beautiful vanilla nose. Heavy baking spices. Flour, then burnt caramel, more spice, and soot that grows over time. It’s very good but a bit basic in my book. 88/100
I haven't felt Springbank's DNA

Wonderfully candied peat, warm fruitiness, lush, muggy, touch of vegetal side. |

Initially very sharp, dense, crispy, rather vegetal, very lively. With time and some water it is turning fruitier and becomes really balanced with th vegetal elements and especially with the relatively young age. It definitely shines more on the palate. |

Actually the arrival is much more substantial and eventful here I think |
Nose: Some vanilla sweetness and yellow fruit (ripe banana, peach), but also gentle peat and brine. Plenty of wet rocks and some ozone, accompanied by straw and burlap. Taste: Oily, tasty, and just pretty brilliant stuff. Gentle peat and whispers of brine. A tad salty. Also fruity notes of oranges, peach and lime zest, as well as vibrant pink grapefruit. Great balance. Finish: Lingering, gentle whispers of peat. Fruits. Long. Just a wonderful, incredible whisky. Such a complexity on the palate, with a fruitiness I haven’t often encountered yet in a Springbank. My favourite so far of this edition of the Blind Tasting Competition.
I very like sour and sweet taste of Springbank. Here we have it, but less intense than for example Springbank 10yo. This Springbank is matured only in bourbon casks first fill and refil. First fill is probably a greater part of composition, becouse in nose we have a lot of vanilla. They were going to create some yoghurt experience in this Springbank. They did it, but for me, bourbon vanilla and springbank sourness doesn't work well. Note: 86 / 100 More about this on my blog: http://whiskyfan.pl/degustacje/single_malt_whisky/campbeltown/springbank-2002-bourbon-wood
Delightful Springbank! Even if the peat and farmhouse profile I appreciate so much with SB is quite toned down here it has a thick fruity palate and lasting finish.
The neck pour and the first few drams was to heavy on the peppery side for me, but slowly as time welnt by and it got som air it startet to settle down and became much more enjoyable. I started out at 84, now i am at 86, and i might end up even higher.
The classic bourbon cask storage gives this whisky a mouth-watering taste sensation of sweet vanilla and light fruits, to which the typical "dirty" Springer aromas join, creating a very harmonious malt. He does not show up as a particularly intense or complex jumper, but delivers exactly what I wanted in view of the key data.
Was not expecting this! I understand this may not be everyone's cup of tea, but when you see marks under 84, I just can't take them seriously.

Immediately I get juicy fruits on the nose, like the confectionery gum juicy fruits. Tropical fruits, tinned pineapples mainly, truckloads of citrus. We have lacquer looming in the background & sandalwood and hints of that dunnage funk, but not so much in your face. Is this 14 years old? Wow, so fruity! I wouldn't have expected this level of character development, for a springbank in this age bracket. |

This arrives hot at the very start (no water doesn't need water I found) that burn quickly subsides into a burst of citrus fruits, sweet on the palate and there is that juicy fruit gum again that was on the nose. There is a taste of polish tossed in amongst the fruit, which is quite complementing. |

Amazing! fruity throughout the whole palate, really opens those fruity characteristics you get from bourbon wood. I get hardly any oak on the finish with a dash of white pepper and juicy fruits lingering in the back. The finish was medium, I wouldn't have described this as being oily or viscous, perhaps somewhere in between. Again! A profile I've come to expect in older Springbank. |
A very interesting malt. Strong in the start. The wood notes are too dominant for me, they destroy the harmony for me. For connoisseurs of strong beginners and whisky dominated by wood!
I usually love Springbank and was excited for this however I found this to be too sharp and cask-dominant with heavy notes of vanillin and coconut. The alcohol doesn't feel well integrated, being aggressive when neat and with some water. After too much water it seems to go from aggressive to flat. No in between
I was a little disappointed with the first try, because he seemed a little reserved. the second time (in direct comparison with the 15er OB) I found it but then almost better than the 15er, since the subtle smoke with the strong ABV and the somewhat reserved but clear Springbank character have made a very nice package for me.
