The dried plum has a waxy, viscous texture, but is slightly sweet, like a loquat syrup with little medicinal flavor, along with apple, honey, and red bean cake. The aftertaste is not bitter, but it is a bit short.

[March, 2019] A quick review of a small sample... ...that represents a whisky style that is long gone, unfortunately. Compare this to today's under-aged modern whiskies and you easily recognise the difference: This dram is well-matured and nicely balanced despite its young age without any of these modern "cheap thrills" like excessive woods or peating levels that should mask today's usually immature spirit (at this age). Sorry folks, but I am an old-fashioned guy...
Нос 89 The colour is yellow gold and the nose offers a very old-stylish profile with lots of honeys, vanilla-toffee, leathery, earthy and some slightly perfumy (not in a bad way) as well as OBF aromas. It is much more complex than 99 per cent of today's eight-years old modern whiskies, maybe they added some older stuff to this batch (which was quite common back then) or the mysterious bottle maturation improved it further. Pretty nice, I like it!
Вкус 89 The taste is old-stylish too on an adorable crème brûlée with a honey-nutty-minty topping. Later more spices pep up this profile further, additional layers provide interesting leathery and mocha flavours. No flaw or imbalance and very quaffable, for sure... Water releases more leathery and earthy aromas in the nose and a chocolatey note on the palate - I like this dram both neat and a little reduced.
Финиш 88 The dram arrives warming and nicely coating on the palate with a minor drying moment (cold metal) that I rather like. The finish is medium to long and adds this minor perfumy flavour again that is not distracting. The drying metallic feeling pops up towards the very end and again I like this (it is often a trademark characteristic of such old-style drams).

Extremely nice yesteryear aromas in this, easily quaffable, but delicious malt. Simply awesome, what a simple 8 year old whisky was able to release in aromas back then! Spice cakes, homemade orange peel, the smell of grandmother's kitchen drawers in the wooden sideboard. Fig biscuits, a hint of violet pastilles, but there is also grandfather who works with leather fat. A distinct flavor that inspires, as it is paired with extreme elegance. Perfect, this overall composition!

Very balanced, delicious, without corners and edges. Not very complex, which is probably the age, but pleasantly powerful and tasty.
Нос 88 sweet, floral, caramel, spicy, woody, cinnamon, plum syrup, orange peel, fresh mint tea
Вкус 89 sweet, flowery, soapy, nuts, honey, fierce teen, malt, after-eight, peppery, apricot and grapefruit, light woody
Финиш 89 medium to long, pleasantly fruity and floral, slightly soapy, again this extreme teenage

Delicious! I would have typed that much older. Strong influence of European oak is felt here.

Nose The initial contact caused some concern. Musty notes rose up, along with something that spontaneously reminded me of escaping gas from an old pipe. A moment where one inevitably wonders if there's something wrong with the whisky. Fortunately, it didn't stay that way. With a little aeration, the nose began to sort itself out. Robust sherry worked its way to the forefront, bringing with it dark cherries and ripe plums. A slightly tart gooseberry added a surprisingly fresh note. The acidity of a cut lemon provided a lively counterpoint. A hint of lovage even appeared in the very background, surprisingly fitting. The initially somewhat musty aroma never completely disappeared. The taste On the palate, any doubts quickly vanish. The Aberlour reveals itself to be exceptionally fruity and remarkably harmonious. Plum jam is clearly the star, pleasantly blending the sweet and spicy components. The sherry influence is well-rounded, with a gentle peppery note. The initial rough edges from the nose are barely noticeable. Instead, everything is balanced and surprisingly assured. It's one of those whiskies that isn't defined by perfection, but by character. And this Aberlour has plenty of character. Conclusion Initially, I was convinced that this whisky had gone bad, but in the end it was precisely its slightly unclean edges that made it so exciting.

Another nice example of how different a standard 70's paint differs from today's standards. And that with only eight years! Since one can be a bit jealous of connoisseurs with old stocks. ;-)
