Хересный Highland Park с нетипичной для винокурни дымностью и морской ноткой; профиль сбалансированный, но мягкий (43%) и суховатый, а оценки сильно расходятся из-за разброса партий.

В аромате преобладают сухофрукты — чернослив, инжир, изюм, финики — вместе с мёдом, карамелью, орехами, кожей, табаком и хересными нотами, поверх которых лёгкой дымкой стелется характерный вересковый дым; при согревании проступают абрикос, апельсин и цветочность. Во вкусе — пряности (перец, корица, имбирь), тёмный шоколад, кожа, табак и хересные танины, дым обычно приходит с запозданием и слабо; послевкусие средней длины, тёплое, пряное и подсушивающее. Хвалят баланс сладкого, кислого, пряного и дымного и «старый» классический характер винокурни, сопоставимый с 18-летним; критикуют мягкость и водянистость при 43%, из-за чего дым теряется, а послевкусие короче ожидаемого, и почти все сходятся, что напитку не хватает крепости. Опытные ревьюеры оценивают строже и подробнее: разброс их оценок (83–89) объясняется прежде всего партиями — при прямом сравнении партия 16/06 оказалась на несколько баллов выше 03/04, где вместо хереса вылезали горечь, танины и картонная сухость старого дуба, что ставит под сомнение равенство всех розливов под одним именем. Часть авторитетных авторов считает релиз недооценённым и приравнивает его к лучшим партиям 18-летнего с добавочной дымностью и влиянием европейского дуба олоросо, другие отмечают нетипичную для винокурни солёность и дымность или находят его сбалансированным, но скучноватым. Рядовые оценки держатся плотнее (в основном 81–89) и повторяют те же мотивы — приятный, питкий, но недостаточно крепкий и слегка стилизованный солод.

Нос 85 Dried fruits, dates, raisins, caramel, spices, dark honey, sherry notes, tobacco, hint of leather and rubber
Вкус 85 Oily, spices, tobacco, dark honey, sherry wood, pepper, subtle sweetness, more rubber and leather, caramel
Финиш 84 Medium long, warm, tobacco, woody, caramel, sherry, some leathery and rubbbery notes

Нос 84 soft smoke, malty, plums, honey, nuts, salt, nicely layered, but not expressive.

Финиш 83 quite long, in line with taste, oak spices, sweet, cinnamon, nutmeg

[August, 2019] "Curiosity killed the whisky drinker" - hopefully not, because I am too curious to let this "Sigurd batch issue" pass untested. I screened my cellar and luckily I found a different "Sigurd" batch coded L0093T L21 03/04 so it is bottled ten month later than the 16/06 (in 2014, most probably). Of course I cannot resist to crack this bottle open and do a head-to-head of these two batches... Wow, what an eye-opener! This 03/04 batch is significantly weaker (by five points) than the excellent 16/06 batch. It lacks the delicious sherry flavours which hide shy in the background and it shows unpleasant old wood impact instead (bitter notes, cardboardy-ness). I never thought that the differences within the same product from about the same time can be that huge (didn't the master blender check every batch?) - 16/06 is excellent, 03/04 average only (at best). I am very glad I did this head-to-head and I can easily imagine that later batches are even weaker than 03/04...
Нос 88 The colour of the 03/04 is one shade paler at deep copper than the 16/06 at burnished (less sherry casks?). The noses offer basically the same profile but 03/04 is significantly less impressive and complex than 16/06. The sherry notes are rather shy and hide in the background while the HP malt aromas center around heather honey and autumn floral aromas only missing the herbal notes completely (there is bitter tea instead, and more tannins). There are much less fruits in the 03/04 too, unfortunately. This is a three points difference in favour of 16/06,
Вкус 86 The taste of the 03/04 is less sweet (again fewer fruits) and less winey than 16/06 and it turns quite bitter after some chewing (the wood grows stronger). Oops, this is not as balanced and less tasty than 16/06 - what a difference! This is astonishing four points weaker than 16/06. Again, water is not needed on this low-proof dram.
Финиш 85 The initial mouthfeel of the 03/04 is warming but less coating than 16/06 with a bitter-drying moment (tannins at work). The finish is just of medium length (16/06 was long). It adds some chocolatey impressions and even more bitter flavours (like tea that steeped too long). There is an unpleasant drying cardboardy feeling towards the end of the finish too, obviously they added some casks with rather old woods to this batch. This is even a six points difference to the fine 16/06 finish (that was great at 91 points).

I love to be a contrarian on this one. It's underrated for sure. To me, this is every bit as good as (the better batches of) the regular 18, plus you get some extra smokiness and spiciness as well as more classic European-oak Oloroso influence. What's not to like?
Нос 89 Typical Oloroso notes: dried plums and figs, mead, honey, balsamic reduction. But also a lovely herbal / heathery / spicy aspect and well-balanced wood notes. Quintessential OB HP. There is some some more overt smoke (from the younger components, no doubt) as well as some already-much-reduced-or-integrated smoke (as in the 18 OB). I'd say this is a bit more lively than the last HP 18 I've had. NAS done right, with the older components leading the way and some young malts thrown in to add some pep. That being said, it's all very soft at 43% (but still wonderfully expressive).
Вкус 88 The European oak comes nicely through at the back of the palate. Before that, it's basically the 18 with a tad more smoke and spice. Lovely balance between sweet, sour, spicy and smoky notes.
Финиш 86 In theory, this would run the risk of seeming thin and ending up on the short side, but the dialed-up smokiness helps prolong the experience. Pretty juicy and sweet, if a bit consensual and thoroughly un-exciting.

RATE FOR BATCH L0214S L21 16/06 (batch number is noted at the back of the front label) I can absolutely relate to HS305 comments. The two different batches L0093T L21 03/04 (scores 86 with me) and L0214S L21 16/06 (scores 91 with me) can not deny beeing of the same family, but 16/06 is so far ahead. Who knows how many batches of Sigurd are around but likely a variation is there if everyone and I would be surprised if the batches got better with time. Thus the divergence in rates here can be explained easily. Just too bad, that the WB entry was not made on the basis of different batches, i.e. as done with Laddies. So now we'll never know who had what, we just know that Sigurd = Sigurd is a false equation. From samples.

Surprisingly smoky for a Highland Park and very maritime. Otherwise a nice, drinkable and tasty malt, but not a typical Highland Park for me.

Overall, very pleasant flavors, unfortunately too light. The smoke from the nose is not found in the taste and hardly on the finish again. I would like to try it with 50%, in batch strength it must be stunning! Nevertheless, a very pleasing summer dram.

On the nose: Sherry, dried fruit, mandarins, banana, tropical fruit and hay. The palette opens with a good spicy pepper taste accompanied by cinnamon and a soft peat taste. Furthermore, the scents of the nose continue in the palette. The aftertaste is shorter than you hope. Flavors of pepper, sherry and the dry mouth feeling that comes with it will stay with you the longest.

So, it's not bad... it has a lot to offer on the nose - you just have to give it enough time/warmth, it needs a bit of time to develop. There is also a lot going on in the taste, from fruity to leathery, tannic sherry cask, dark chocolate. There's something about it - I find it exciting. I'm positively surprised after 316 reviews with an average of 84.77 points; maybe I expected less? Well, I'm a HP fan, but objectively speaking, it has a lot to offer. [91 - 87 = extremely tasty -> I'd better get a second bottle]
Нос 88 dark fruits, juicy raisins, dry figs, walnut/Brazil nut, leather/old book bindings/library style, acacia honey, caramel, toffee; HP heather smoke hovers far in the background. Later, red grapes too. Lots of spices, Christmas market; it also seems a bit dustier and drier due to the sherry tannins (hence perhaps my library with old leather bindings). I have no idea why, but it reminds me of an old cognac. It has something of a wine cellar where a few bottles of cognac are leaking... When you warm the glass, fresh apricots and an orange appear; then it also seems a bit more floral than before - exciting.
Вкус 88 Spicy at the start, lots of typical (sherry) spices, pepper, ginger, dark aromas, leather, dry dark chocolate and, after a while, there is also a good portion of smoke. 2nd Sip: creamy and oily, more fruit aromas emerge; raisins, apricots, but it quickly returns to the spice of the sherry cask with tannins and leather/tobacco, dark chocolate. And again the smoke comes a little late. Nice transition.
Финиш 87 Nut mix, leather, tobacco, heather smoke, drying on the tongue. It also lasts relatively long after...

Butter biscuits, vanilla, honey, caramel, herbs, the typical HP smoke. Then dark chocolate and a jet of oak. Everything was very set and mild ... too mild and styled for my taste. More turns would definitely do him good.

Hardly any smoke in the nose or mouth. Lots of fruit, leather. Balanced, short finish. A little more alcohol would probably have looked good on him.

completely different character than the big brother, the Ragnvald. Still very tasty and does not fall off next to the 18 year old.

In the smell of pleasant blending of woody tones and ripe red apples. The flavor is more desiccant and adds ginger spice in an amount larger than small. It did not fit me completely - except for the spiciness, it is such a fuss and the price is quite high

Something quite rich and sweet. Very balanced, maybe too much, if it can be. I would have liked something a bit fancier with a flavor that stands out a little more.
