Quite restrained for a Lagavulin OB this is not kipper juice but a nicely creamy peat and pepper combo more in the style of some Talisker I have tasted. No need for water this is really good and in my view not you typical Laga.

It would not be a dream to think that this is an 18-year-old smoker. Is that good or bad now? No matter. Class whisky.

Smoked bananas, pear sauce, lemon jelly. Very yellow-fruity, very refreshing. The smoke then pushes forward. In addition: Grease, fresh tarred road; even a little hospital corridor, which one usually has with the neighboring styery. Maritime notes. Vanilla and honey give extra sweetness. |

Fruit sweet and very smoky for a maturity of 18 years. A reflection of the nose with the yellow fruits, the dry smoke, the summer road-building associations. Slightly oily, with hints of pudding particles. Sea salt, seaweed. Coffee beans, mild spices, mild herbs. |

The first whiff took me back to Norway. The scenic northern coast bordering the North Pole ring.
[June, 2018] I had this dram during this year's "Feis Ile" tasting session. Usually Lagavulin offers decent drams for the Feis Ile but even at Lagavulin the high quality of the Feis Ile bottlings seems to degrade over time - at least for the last two years. So what will this year's release be all about? This is another excellent Lagavulin with a rather questionable cask setting but a fine result, nonetheless. I really like it, just the nose was too shy for me (given this is a Lagavulin)...

The colour is jonquiripe corn and the texture shows small tears that consolidate to bigger ones with slow legs. The nose is rather subtle on a fine autumn floral and herbal profile (what indicates European oak, usually) with almost no sherry aromas at all. So, what does ex-bodega butt mean? Was there ever sherry in these butts or were these casks that much "rejuvenated" that all of the flavours are gone now? Rejuvenation of casks seems the "miracle approach" of the Scotch whisky industry to the ever growing cask shortage crisis (due to the ongoing whisky boom). But a rejuvenated cask shows more the profile of new oak (after planing off all the depleted wood there is virgin oak only as the prior content did not reach the inner wood at all). So they can write ex-sherry (or in this case bodega) butt legally but actually this is cheating on the customer - it is new wood, finally! Nonetheless, this nose is quite fine and balanced but it is not impressive at all. |

The taste is richer than the nose (what is good!) and greatly chewable on fine barley sugars, maritime peaty flavours, some fruits and herbs in a firm and just about right wooden framework. That is really good and the Lagavulin-style I adore (again: Age DOES matter!). It is layered and interesting to explore, after some chewing I detect even some shy sherry flavours, perfect! |

The dram arrives warming and nicely coating on the palate with no distracting moments (compare this to the mouthfeel of this year's Laphroaig Cairdeas that I had just before and you will see: Age DOES matter!). The finish is long and sweeter than the taste with a minor drying end (that is not very much distracting). Water releases more aromas both in the nose and on the palate and it turns the whole dram more pleasing to the taste buds. But to be honest, sometimes my taste buds prefer not to be pleased (but challenged) and so I like the neat dram better. |
One of the best Lagas I've had, very clever cask selection, amazing smoke for the age, but still fruity, chewy.

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2019/04/10/feis-ile-2018-lagavulin/ Crazy as it may sound, some people actually buy to drink! Can you imagine buying a pair of £100 shoes and not being able to try them on first? - just look! The apparent lack of opportunity to try the Feis Ile bottlings was a frustrating theme that continued throughout the festival. However, if you went on the [Lagavulin] tour [not actually available on the Open Day itself], you got to try it. So here we go. N: A unique combo of oyster sauce & cherry aid sweetness. Not one for the cookbook, but it works here. T: A similar savoury sweetness to the nose, the barley intact with sweet light smoke. F: A dryish malty oaky, decent length & competent finish with a medicinal touch. C: I get why people can buy blind, a bottle-in-a-bag from Lagavulin. They have faith in the integral quality of the distillery and its output, and this festival release will surely reaffirm their belief.
I've had better Lagavulin, but I've also had worse Lagavulin, quite good, but not spectacular either, but it ranks well in the upper midfield for me

Spring Fresh In 2018 Lagavulin launched for the third festival an a row and 18 Year Old (for Feis Ile 2019 it was a 19 years old and I presume that trend will continue). I had to admit that those Feis Ile release, the distillery exclusives and mostly the Jazz Festival bottlings are very much to my liking. I wonder if this 18 years old from 2018 is also a winner (when I poured it at my Feis Ile Masterclass in Ghent, it was the winner). It is a vatting of refill hogsheads and sherry butts. I pour from bottle 4.025 of 6.000. The nose if spring fresh on vanilla, lime and mint, even some banana and pear. Some elderflower. Would that be from the sherry butts? It has a medicinal edge, but not overly much. Soft smoke. Some horse stable and rocky coast. Yes, I can imagine that. It is very good, to say the least, albeit somewhat restraint (for a Lagavulin). The taste is very good! A touch sweet with a lovely smokiness. Citrus fruit takes charge. Orange liqueur with sugared lime peel. Reminds me somewhat of yoghurt with pieces of fruit, but wrapped in a smoky jacket with green garden herbs. Softer than the standard 16, despite the ABV. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. The sherry is present, but clearly plays second fiddle. Very good, like I said. The finish is medium long (I would have loved for it to be longer), sooty and oily with lovely peat smoke until the very last moment. A winner and then some.

A rather fresh nose, with notes of dirty soot, salted peanuts, seaweed, oysters and seashell. This is exactly what you want from Lagavulin. Colour: Sunlight / straw yellow Nose: Pungent-salty-sharp! Sweet peat, rope and tingling salty citrus flavors that make the nostrils tremble. In places but also floral and fresh kept (with reminder of detergent-citrus). The peaty phenols are packed spicy at the same time, but the salinity governs the nose. Taste: Sweet-salty-peppery and very maritime on the tongue. Lots of peat, tar and citrus fruits. Roasted nuts and a woody freshness add to the finish, but they can not really change the discordant consensus. Finish: Medium long - peaty-spicy and still very salty. Ash, cold tar and with the smoky taste notes. Ok, that was it. 87 points N: 89P / G: 87P / F: 86P

An understatement malt. Restrained nose (at first) especially if compared the the 12 cs. But the palate has a wonderful build up with the malt taking room and getting fuller in body by the second. Great refined herbal and oak notes the younger siblings are missing. Wounderful casksing, sherry in missing but not missed in this edition. I like it a notch better over the follow-up 19 yo. Underrated imho.

excellent balance of salt and peat, with a side of citrus.. reminds me of the current 12 yo, but this one has more finesse and complexity
Tasty, even without water. Price performance -> probably nothing.
Pale gold color, rather young nose and not very marked by the barrels, very lemony, mineral, iodized, smoked salmon, a little austere but rather classy. Mouth powerful, austere too, very iodized and very peppery, mineral and maritime, with ashes, rubber, lemon, long finish on pepper. Very good in his style, it lacks a bit of sherry for my taste.
A nice Feis Island, in the same vein as the 2016. A real lagavulin, mineral, fresh, lemony and successful.

The strong peat did not conceal the rich fruity taste and elegant smoke. The complexity is excellent, but it also has a pleasant juicy feeling, with a hint of vanilla cream added to the cake. It's like an old-fashioned gentleman sitting at the dining table eating fruit and smoking a pipe.

Lagavulin 18 Feis Ile 2018 WID: 112975 Abv. 53.9%, Refill Hogsheads, Sherry Butts Nose: the typical Lagavulin smoke can be recognized, but in a significantly degraded form, the smoke is mainly noticeable in many sweet nuances, which support the fruitiness of ex-Bourbon Casks, the sherry influence is very subtle and restrained, elderberry nectar , Spring flowers, surprisingly fresh Taste: distinctly darker and stronger than the nose, here comes the sherry to wear, the alcohol is very well integrated Finish: medium length, with a lot of ash firewood, Personally, I can not do much with the departure of the most Lagas Conclusion: Reminds a little of the 16er, only with more subtle sherry and significantly more bums. Color: Straw Nose: A mellow, nice combination of farmy notes (not just a euphemism for manure as it sometimes is), peat, juicy apple, citrus, and grain. I don't find this particularly medicinal. I suppose it makes sense given the age, but not especially assertive. A little bit of wood spice makes an appearance with continued nosing. Overall, a well-balanced whole with nothing particularly standing out. Instead, I just come away thinking "good nose." Water doesn't really add much. Taste: Good mouthfeel and not any appreciable heat at a healthy cask strength. The smoke is there on the palate, but it's mild. Again, not especially assertive, but nice. This is distillate-forward despite Diageo's usual elaborations about wood in their special OBs. Not much else really springs to mind here. It's good, but not exceptional. Finish: Average. Comments: Very solid whisky. Let's just agree on that first. However, I think it's maybe a tad overrated around here. Normally, with this many votes, any whisky approaching a 90 on WB is a stone-cold winner. I think this is worth having, and I'm glad I purchased it on my sojourn on Islay last year. However, it's only in the middle-of-the-pack in terms of the peaters I own. I have to think this gets inflated a tad both because it's Lagavulin and because it's a Feis Ile bottling. Very good, not great.
