Don't worry, Laphroaig, this is not competition for the ever-popular Laphroaig 10 CS, whose next batch has been eagerly awaited by many for quite some time now. Don't get me wrong: this is a very nice cask-strength Islay peat whisky that really gets a lot right. But hey, this is Ardbeg, and given some of the disastrous special bottlings of recent years, I somehow expected their first 10-year-old cask-strength whisky to be an absolute stunner. While it does miss out on a few nice Ardbeg aromas here and there, overall it's good, average Islay whisky, but nothing groundbreaking. Even though he has his qualities. What could have changed about the distillery's setup 10 or 15 years ago that makes it so obvious Ardbeg can no longer produce high-end products?

Smoked bacon, warm peat smoke, smoldering herbs, lime zest – it definitely smells like Ardbeg, no complaints there. Despite its 61.7% ABV, there are absolutely no harsh alcoholic notes, no matter how deeply you inhale while nosing. Fresh, still-warm tar, pineapple and grapefruit, caramelized brown sugar, beet syrup. The smoke gradually turns ashy. |

It certainly has a powerful start, no question, but even neat there's nothing excessively harsh or alcoholic. Burnt caramel, licorice, bacon smoke, sea salt, black pepper, cloves. Dry oak, a freshly baked apricot cake, yeast dough, vanillin. |

Despite the lingering smoky, bacon-like notes, the finish isn't particularly long. A touch of fruit, dry oak, a hint of spice, and dried herbs. |

Crisp, fresh, delicious, only the smoke is 10 years old, the rest dances on the tongue and tastes like 20 - I'm usually not a fan, but this one is fucking sexy! Thanks @heiko

Surely an experience, but also another reminder that when it comes to cask-strength Islay whisky in its teenage years, a sample suffices for me. It would take me ages to get through a whole bottle of this stuff, especially at this strength. Pretty sure I wouldn't be in the mood for this more than once or twice a month (at most, and only in autumn / winter). Also, you can get a similar experience for much cheaper from independent bottlers.

It's been a while since I had the regular ten-year-old, but this, to me, seems like a different beast altogether. It's sweeter (the high ABV surely helps), more funky / estery and even slightly yeasty – at least when undiluted. With Water, it becomes more herbal (especially dried / roasted / burnt herbs come to mind) and floral. Thyme honey? Strong dung / cow patty vibes as well, but the "farminess" comes and goes. Certainly has enough depth to spend quite some time with it – though as always with unsherried young Ardbeg, I feel like you almost need to have a masochistic streak to really want to get deep into this stuff. |

Whoa, a lot of paprika powder and jalapeño pepper initially (the taste, not the heat), which was unexpected, but then the smoke takes over: burnt rubber, smoldering plastic, bonfires on the beach (yes: plural), smoked fish. An underlying honey-like sweetness throughout. Herbal honey of some kind. Insanely intense. However, I am not a fan of this raw, brute, boozy/spirity style. |

Tart, but with pockets of sweetness, and bucketloads of burnt herbs / vegetation. Very, very hot if you don’t water it down quite a bit. However, it becomes progressively more bitter when you add water. Long finish, obviously. An appropriately interminable, almost haunting aftermath that might get you into trouble with your closest and dearest. An extra point for intensity, but, again: I don’t find this particularly enjoyable. |

The nose is softer than the reduced version; the peat is less intense than usual, iodine mingles with a rather subtle vanilla, lemon zest, shovelfuls of salt and limestone, gravel, sleet. Conference plums and pears. On the palate, however, it's something else entirely: oily, silky, very delicate, yet with a beautiful power. Vanilla Turkish delight, lychee juice, almond oil, then it becomes herbaceous, reeds, chives, lots of pepper and cloves. A violent finish, but not as much as I expected: mint, asparagus, vanilla icing, cookie dough, a pinch of salt. White ash. While the nose is a touch subdued, it's very similar to the reduced version, but with a less explosive peatiness. The palate is then truly delicious and subtle, paving the way for a powerful yet not overpowering finish, where again, nuance prevails over sheer force. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2026/03/ardbeg-ten-cask-strength-committee.html

Excellent, powerful, killer Ardbeg! Unlike the modern ten, the barrels here are selected to be of a higher class - mature; there is no sourdough breadiness or Duchess Pie. The strength here only ennobles and emphasizes with depth the characteristic and mature notes of the bourbon barrel. I especially want to highlight the taste. With every minute of oxygenation, it becomes brighter, sweeter, and more interesting! Bravo! 22 23 22 22

Without a doubt a very welcome bottling - and better late than never! Overall, it's beautifully powerful and full-bodied. I'm pleased that it's also interesting enough to keep you occupied for quite a while. In terms of refinement, the current 10-series standard can't compete. My only complaint is the very ashy character of the smoke.

Vanilla, ashy smoke, sea breeze, smoldering wood, tar, seaweed, iodine, brine, grilled pineapple, brownish apples, licorice (salty), pronounced citrus notes, damp reeds, limestone, honey, cloves, cooked asparagus, oak spice. |

Ardbeg is finally doing what whisky enthusiasts have always demanded: They're offering their Ten at cask strength. Laphroaig paved the way. However, this bottling is only available to members of the Ardbeg Committee. The price is expected to be around €85. The regular Ardbeg 10 can be had for less than half that price, and at 46% ABV, it's not bad either. The cask strength bottling has 61.7% ABV – that's a lot, meaning the whisky went into the cask at full strength. Its color is pale yellow, more like white wine. But then again, it's been matured in a bourbon barrel, so the color is fitting. glen-efze.de
