Атипичный Mortlach: свежий ментолово-эвкалиптовый и лакричный профиль вместо привычной мясной плотности, у части образцов — насыщенный херес. Опытные ценят необычность, отмечая, что послевкусие слабее аромата; оценки ровные, около 88.

В аромате доминируют необычные для этого винокурни ноты: лакрица, эвкалипт и ментоловая свежесть, тальк и порошок, тёмная карамель, шоколад, подгоревшие орехи и лёгкий уголь дыма — многие подчёркивают сходство с аптекой или старой кондитерской и полное отсутствие типичной для Mortlach мясной тяжести. Вкус плотный и маслянистый, сильный, с обилием лакрицы и перца, оттенками апельсина, мёда, трав, тёмных фруктов и чернослива; с водой становится слаще, но быстро тускнеет. Послевкусие среднее или длинное, свеже-травяное, к концу суховатое и слегка горчит, и почти все сходятся, что оно заметно уступает аромату и телу. Часть образцов раскрывается совсем иначе — как насыщенная хересная бомба с тёмными сушёными и тропическими фруктами, изюмом, финиками, кожей, какао, апельсиновой цедрой и солоноватым нашатырём, при хорошо сбалансированном спирте; такие образцы получают самые высокие баллы (91, 94) и хвалятся за развитие в открытой бутылке. Опытные ревьюеры делают акцент на нехарактерности и оригинальности, признавая слабость послевкусия, тогда как остальные чаще отмечают либо свежую травяную атипичность, либо густую хересную сладость. Оценки согласованы и держатся плотно около 88, единичные отклонения вниз (85) — за нетипичность, вверх (94) — за удачные хересные бутылки.

This one really has some unusual aroma's, things that haven't found very often in other whisky's. In taste it is still pretty surprising, the finish is less spectacular. Licorice dominates the taste, combined with some fruits.
Нос 89 Wow, licorice, eucalytus powder, and some smoke, talcum powder. burnt nuts. Dark caramel, some chocolate. Very special, really unusual aroma's.
Вкус 89 Pretty strong, lot's of licorice and pepper. Some hints of orange, a little honey. Later on some dark fruits, prunes, and some drop.
Финиш 87 Now less pepper, still a lot of licorice. Somewhat bitter, pretty long, some sweet notes remain. Undoubtedly less spectacular than nose and body.

A friend has this bottle and I received a dram. Wow, for a 13 year old a very nice nose, taste and good finish which is quite long. Very nice dram, 88 points from me.

A very odd Mortlach this is.... It is not what you expect, but it is quaffable.
Нос 86 This is not a very typical Mortlach nose... Some freshness, some wood, little bit of caramel. It has suprisingly fresh notes like menthol in it. With water there are some dark spices in here. Some coal smoke.
Вкус 85 Hay, honey, subtle cask influence. Gets sweeter but also a sour hint. Sure this is a Mortlach? With water: much sweeter. But it looks like it drawns quickly.
Финиш 85 Medium length. Little hot. Tad bitter. With water: a little more sweet. not much difference though.

Quite an odd Mortlach I should say. In here I did not find the meaty heavy flavors of the Mortlachs I tasted so far.
Нос 87 The nose is like entering an ancient candy store or maybe drugstore. Fresh nose with hints of citrus, menthol and eucalyptus. No signs of BBQ or meat.
Вкус 88 Taste remains fresh. Oily and thick. Herbal notes coming up; bit of pepper. I dare not entering water in order not to spoil things.
Финиш 87 Pretty long finish. Fresh herbal notes till the final end. In spite of the freshness it is getting a little dry in the end.

Re-tasted this Mortlach after 3,5 years. This is a very flavourful Mortlach with lots of liquorice and some fennel, like opening a big bag of sweet quality drop. But it also has a fresh side to it, like green mints. And of course there’s the PX usuals suspects raisins and dates, runny treacle, roasted nuts (macadamias in particular) and red fruits marmalade. Not to forget the vanilla fudge sweetness. It is actually quite on the sweet side this one. Very enjoyable Mortlach!

It gets better every time. A clear Mortlach sherry nose with dark fruits, oranges, burnt toast, licorice, lovage, a touch of soy sauce and cocoa. Wonderful. Wonderfully intense on the palate with these same aromas plus a hint of salmiak. The barrel imparts spices like cloves and black pepper. The alcohol level is perfectly balanced. The finish then brings back notes of cocoa, orange zest, and salmiak. A great whisky that benefits from some time in the opened bottle. It develops beautifully.

Wow, a real sherry bomb but much more than just that.
Нос 90 Sherry and fruit, currents, raisins & sultanas, a touch of old leather, intense. A sherry bomb without being over powered by the sherry as some are. wonderful.
Вкус 90 Very Fruity, both dark dried, and fresh / tropical, perfect abv. Some leather, wow !
Финиш 90 Medium, with a tiny touch of camp fire, I am not into peated whisky but this is perfect.

Edit: Yesterday I had the second time in the glass after the bottle is now about 10 days open and was more than just surprised. The initial dry notes of wood, which reminded me slightly of smoke, have now evolved into a really present ashen, slightly decayed chimney campfire smoke. Humans tasted good yesterday. Maybe it was due to the shape of the day, but I would not have expected so after the first tasting also he looks slightly moldy and dirty, a piece reminds a lot of the character springbanks and is therefore rather an atypical mortlach. I like it 89/100
