[September, 2021] I am out of Glenfarclas' Family Cask series after this year's massive price uptick (which is ridiculous) but this cask strength edition seems to be still reasonably priced - if the quality is right... ..and it is, no doubt. These casks were seasoned with young wine only (like so often these days) so the sour-winey flavours dominate and the more complex aromas of casks which contained old seasoned sherry are missing almost completely. Nonetheless, such modern sherry profiles can be delicious too and this is an excellent example. By the way, many Family Cask edition own a modern sherry profile as well. Unfortunately, this dram is not a good swimmer so I suggest to saviour it neat with all its power of 60.2% (but beware, alcohol at this strength is inflammable).

The colour is chestnutoloroso sherry and the nose offers a modern sherry profile with the young sour-winey aromas dominating but do not overpower the malt completely. Beside the winey aromas delicious barley sugars, nuts, spices and waxes complement the profile to an easy and enjoyable sniffing experience. This is a good modern sherry nose without flaws or off-notes, no doubt. |

The taste is much more memorable with a great combo of both malt and sherry flavours backed by appropriate spicy woods. Hey, I like this! This is not spectacular (missing the complexity of old sherry maturations), but if I chew this dram for some time a lot of impressive flavours crawl slowly over my taste buds and please them. Among them are different chocolates (both milk and dark), ripe fruits, honeys, herbs, nuts and spices. No flaw or imbalance that I can find, these casks were carefully selected. |

The dram arrives hot (due to the high abv of 60.2%) on the palate which quickly turns into a warming mouthfeel with a great creamy coating effect - wow, what a nice surprise. The spirit's quality seems to be excellent, which is confirmed by a rather long finish without distracting moments at all. The finish adds a lot more of tasty spices (white pepper, chili, vanilla) which stay on my palate even minutes after I swallowed a sip. Water turns both nose and taste more punchy which is the same at different reduction levels - so this dram is clearly a case for the heavy cask strength connoisseurs who dare to drink "Navy Strength" (over-proof alcohol was used by the navy in case the cannon's fuse got wet and did not burn during heavy sea). |

A 10 year old cask strength whisky.
Hmm, to be honest, I'm rather disappointed with the malt. Too hot, too restless, the aromas aren't somehow full either. Good drink with a sip of water, but cheaper there. Too bad.
I cannot understand the high ratings here. For me, it tends to be an average whisky, nothing more.

A young, wild Glenfarclas as it should be. Clearly superior to the normal bottlings 105, 8, 10, 12. Small batch as it should be - excellent barrel composition. Congratulations to Kirsch. Please go again in this direction with older age!

Beautifully balanced shery cask, nothing dominates unpleasantly, doesn't stick with sweetness and doesn't get dusty with wood. Rather modern profile, easy drinking. Notes from a blind tasting. It's almost a pleasant surprise for a Glenfarclas, although that's a lot of wood for ten years. So it somehow fits into the picture. Of course, the fact that it's a batch and not a barrel explains the balance.

Immediately after pouring, massive sherry, fruity, not too sweet, hardly spicy. After a few moments, fresh, ripe fruit. After about an hour of standing there is only sherry, sweet, very full. Very clean dried fruit, still hardly any spice. When warmed, massive notes of barrel acid emerge, furniture polish, then the dried fruits again, now extremely buttery, mixed with fresh blackcurrants. Very late it becomes increasingly chemical, lysoform and floor wax. After the first sip, the nose seems even more inviting, now with dark caramel or honey. |

Very strong attack with a lot of white pepper, initially sweet in the mouth, but then quickly becomes spicy and woody. It's always amazing how far apart the nose and mouth can be with sherry whiskys. The mouthfeel is oily to creamy. In the second sip it was much earlier with wood and slightly reduced sweetness, also more pepper and barrel acid. |

The finish is medium to long, more drying and woody, but definitely not overly so. Gently warms the chest area. Slightly more astringent in the second sip. |

He needs water. Still, it's a pretty average Glenfarclas overall. 03.10.2021 - Update: tried again today: it stays the same, the whisky is average in my opinion; it is by no means complex and the alcohol is palpable. Today I find the taste and finish even weaker, so I correct my rating downwards.

A batch filled for Kirsch Import with over 60% vol. and just 10 years of aging in Oloroso Casks. The result is a dark golden whisky - so it can't just be the widely used Glenfarclas casks that were used here. On the other hand, Glenfarclas unfolds its charm more in the old bottlings... www.glen-efze.de

A great Oloroso bomb, but Glenfarclas remains recognizable.
This is not really my type of whisky. Not a bad whisky, but the spice not to my liking. By the way, water makes it very sweet. Full review in a session of six and a ride in a historic tram: https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2022/06/02/drams-in-der-tram/
He needs some water (my comments are based on about 52% dilution) and time to breathe. I can rarely enjoy more than 60% pure. Due to the vintage (2011) this can only be a "modern style" sherry whisky, but that does not devalue it. For me an above-average whisky from the Oloroso barrel, well rounded. There are significantly worse whiskys in this price range.

First nose: raisins, the usual dried fruits (figs, dates, plums), toffee. Forest honey and cinnamon. Nuts, vanilla and Christmas spices. Old leather armchair. After about 15 to 20 minutes, clear orange and dark cherry notes join in. Dark chocolate too. I don't have alcohol stings. |

Oily start. The aromas that one had in the nose are also reflected on the palate. There is also a little ginger and white pepper heat. The spiciness of the wood can also be felt. For an ex-Oloroso barrel, I also think it's sweet. |

Becomes dry and slightly acidic. Reminiscent of a plum compote with rhubarb. In addition, oak seasoning, leather and ginger. Medium to long. |

I can't say that it doesn't taste good, I also think it's good value for money. I like it a lot, compared to the standard Glenfarclas 15, there is already a difference in the barrels used, which gives the malt a lot of power and character.

On the nose a typical Glenfarclas with sherry and wood. In comparison to 105, which is very enjoyable pure with only 0.2 less volume percent, the addition of water is recommended here. However, it breaks down very quickly. Seems quite unrounded and was my worst cask strength Glenfarclas so far. Edit November 25, 2023 After just over a year, during which the bottle sat around with around 30% content, I picked it up again today. Initially rated 81 points, I had no expectations. And was surprised. It opened up nicely. With a little water you can now see great sherry notes, leather, slightly sweet and subtle hints of oak. I have to increase the 81 points from back then. And tip to those who want to get a bottle of this: Divide it between 2 empty bottles and let it oxidize properly. I've never had a bottle that has improved so much over time.

Unfortunately, this bottling did not convince me. The nose in particular is not very expressive. The alcohol content is extremely high, but the whisky only gets a little better with water. A good example of the fact that even at Glenfarclas the good casks are becoming fewer.

Lovely sherry bomb, wonderfully sweet - almost sticky, Glenfarclas is a safe bet and barrel-aged it is usually really good

Not very long, not very sustainable. Good malt, but the alcohol is powerful. |
Much too expensive for this young boring malt. It seems that Glenfarclas is running out of good barrels ...
For normal drinking better with spoon of water, my first CS single malt whisky. Very pleasant taste, but % of alcohol outbalancing depth and taste profil.

Fantastisch.
I absolutely cannot agree with the opinions that this whisky is good. Very Disappointed, Sulfur, Flavorless (So weak!), Alcohol is noticeable. 79 - 0 : It is unacceptable. Have a serious flaw.
First the typical Glenfarclas aromas of sherry, plum and spice. Then cherry jam, slightly woody, sherry again and a pleasant sweetness. The finish is bitter with notes of chili and dark cherry and long-lasting. After a while in the glass, all the aromas evaporate. A drop of water helps here. Then it tastes the same as before.
