Quick hit review. Whisky calendar - Day 2. We have seasoned Oloroso casks, a young whisky and a lot of negativity - let's decipher this Glenfarclas. On the nose, stewed fruits, gummy bears and wood spices can't hide the alcohol underneath. However, taste and finish improve considerably, featuring rich notes of oranges, dark chocolate and roasted coffee. It's a spirit-driven malt for sure, but some of the criticism is certainly overdone. That said, 105 is a far better value. RATING: 3.2/5.0 stars ≙ 81 pts → AVERAGE [+]
Quick review. Whisky calendar 2.12. A bit rough, but age and price considered it's not too bad.

Obviously young, but with the vintage given it's not like they try to hide it. Not sure about what type of Oloroso casks that have been used here. This is definitely no sherry bomb and the colour is quite light as well. There's some wood notes, but those as well are more "youngish" than sherry saturated, there's actually a hint of vanilla to it. Not bad, but it would not take much to find a more interesting 'farclas nose. |

Again the age, or lack there of is obvious. Quite alcoholic, spicy, almost hot and aggressive on arrival, but it calms quickly. And as it calms orange chocolate and coffee develop. There are some nice flavours in there, but they would have been more prominent and enjoyable with less alc. even if it's just 46%. There's not much room to experiment with water in a 2cl. |

A bit short of medium in length. The finish starts of with too much tannic bitterness in my opinion, but as that fades it leaves a rather nice sweet orange at the end. |
[December, 2021] Oops, I did it - and bought a bottle of pre-mature whisky what I regret, usually... ...and I absolutely regret this spontaneous decision. I was a little tempted by the labelling "Oloroso Sherry Casks" because in my (maybe stupid) understanding the different sherry types like Oloroso, PX, Fino etc. develop after a lengthy solera maturation process only (depending on the processes and conditions of the respective solera system). These bloody casks never ever contained any solera-matured sherry wine but just cheap young (unmatured) sherry which has nothing in common with what I call Oloroso sherry. I am not sure if it is legal to call unmatured sherry "Oloroso" but it is cheating the customer, for sure. In addition the malt is paedophilic and the wood is aggressive, to me it is a shame to bottle such stuff let alone for a special Christmas edition.

The colour is yellow gold and the nose offers a simple and slightly cheesy young sherry profile without any significant malt aromas (except pre-mature mashy impressions). This smells like pre-matured wine mixed with underaged whisky in an aggressive oak cask. A nose to forget. |

The taste is young wine, alcoholic spirit and virgin oak tannins, nothing else. Where is the malt? Where is whisky in there at all? After some chewing shy barley sugars pop up finally but at the same time the taste gets very unpleasant due to increasingly aggressive bitter-astringent tannins. Where is the spittoon? This is not drinkable to me, sorry folks. |

The dram arrives warming with minor coating effects on my palate but quickly unpleasant bitter-astringent moments from aggressive tannins (in an 8-years old!) pop up. The finish is rather short and turns even more bitter-drying which is very distracting and not to my liking at all. What the hell did they do with these casks? Did they just pour a bottle of sherry in virgin oak casks, roll them across the distillery plaza and call these "Oloroso Casks" afterwards? It smells and tastes like that. |

Four friends and experienced connoisseurs from the Whiskybase have already independently rated the whisky and given it between 77 and 81 points. Wow, that must be really bad, I thought. Well, it's really not that good, but I don't think it's that bad. Absolutely ok for the price. The whisky is between eight and nine years old, so it's not that virgin by today's standards when I think of all the 3-5 year old malts that are now being sold (I recently had a current 5 year old Ben Nevis in a glass).

The nose is simple sherry whisky with no complexity or depth, and a bit fizzy, but compared to other simple sherry malts it doesn't really stand out. My first association when smelling it was also straight towards simple spice, probably young oloroso. |

The palate offers a simple, round sweetness, lots of barley sugar malt. Then there is a slightly bitter woodiness, not at all fizzy and a bit of nougat. In a blind tasting, I might even have ended up with a bourbon maturity due to the pronounced barley sugar sweetness (at least without the nose). |

The mouthfeel is OK, 46 percent is acceptable so that the whisky doesn't become too thin aromatically, but it shouldn't have been any more than that because then the whisky would have become too fizzy. |
Not the expected sherry bomb, but quite spritty. Little attractive.
