It has all of the typical Arbdeg aromas but rather in a smooth and balanced manner. It does not go into any extreme but has it all. Thus it's actually a pretty drinkable and enjoyable Ardbeg.
Quick hit review. Online tasting 04/2025. I remember the shitstorm that the relaunch of this exclusive Ardbeg 17-year-old caused, heavily chill-filtered at bottled at measly 40% ABV for 'the fans'. On the nose, citrus fruits, peppercorn and brine mingle with oak spices and whiffs of bonefire ashes. Nice, but not very exciting. The peat smoke finally arrives on the palate, it is rather spicy and watery with honey, grapefruit zest and resin. Bitter green tea, lime and hints of salt mark the oaky finish - it is almost like chewing on wood. Meh. I mean seriously, even Big Peat offers a better experience. Vanilla, candied citrus, toffee, sweet peat, a bit weak but very good

[Mai, 2015] I had this dram during an "Ardbeg Bicentenary" tasting at Bonn. In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5. I took no detailed notes.
Easy to drink, but despite the 40% ABV, it's a powerful Ardbeg with a little smoke but enough complexity!

Unfortunately, I can not go along with the exuberant eulogies of many of my friends here. He is much too thin in my taste. With more momentum he could have been better. Supplement: If you do your mouth properly, then it is actually much more intense over, what I like better then. But then the dram is empty after two sips ;-)

I was curious to see how close it would be to my favorite Ardbeg 1977, and I was clearly disappointed. Good, but nothing that stands out. 81-85 – Wow, really good one

Body : Medium, oily. Very firm. I have only one bottle.
A mellow nose, bread dough, marzipan, a touch of peat, vanilla cream and toasted wheat, varnished wood, egg custard, a sprinkle of icing sugar. In the background, powerful iodine, but also some exotic fruits: pineapple, papaya, mango, lemon sorbet. Tarte Tatin, heather honey, crystalline reflections of salt. On the palate, it's a bit light, of course, but delicately fruity, silky, pistachio Turkish delight, rosewater, coconut pulp, a hint of limestone, perfectly controlled spices: nutmeg, tarragon, horseradish. Dried figs. A deeply herbaceous peat gradually emerges. A long and powerful finish, slightly bitter wood, kola nut. It's light, airy, very fruity, supple, and subtle. The peat is barely noticeable, with no medicinal notes, tar, or other oddities. However, typical elements are present, such as herbaceous notes, lemon, iodine, and a smooth finish that develops when the glass is left to rest for a while. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2025/10/ardbeg-guaranteed-17-yo.html

This whisky was created with a lot of skill (and good material to work with as a starter). It's not engineered, it's created. You are lead from the nose to the finish with a great yet stable development from medium smoky and a bit vinous to rather vinous and only mildly smoky. A great whisky to try.
Well, I think I should first note that it was a mistake diluting this to 40%. It feels like we're a bit disrespected, or at the very least, cheated. Strong words, I know. It's not like I didn't know this was 40% ABV. But still.... It's a shame because this could have been excellent... like Airigh Nam Beist. I first scored this an 86 years ago.... This is really much better than that. So 88 points it is!

Beautiful harmony in a glass. Maybe a little too beautiful making it a bit boring. Would have liked to have tasted this dram with a higher alcohol percentage.

This is the best Ardbeg I have ever tasted. Shame it is empty. Glad I still have a small 5cl sample saved for a rainy day.
S 7 As the new 17yo is launched, time to revisit the original release. Rumoured the vat is older than 17yo, when we do some calculations about when Ardbeg was producing vs mothballed. The 40% has taken away the intensity and so it lacks the power to push all the way until the finish. Still. I enjoyed this more than any of the Ardbeg 19 batches that I've tried so far.

The 17-year-old Ardbeg is a much more mature, finer variant des Ardbeg 10. But one of the old school Ardbeg 10. I wish to try it with a few% more vol to be able to.

At first it took me some time to come around to the Peat side of scotch. This version was highly recommended and since then, it has been harder to come by. I have appreciated it now that I have learned that you need to savor the flavor on this one for a good two three minutes to get the full span. If you were to just pour and sip and drink down like it was juice, you would lose so much of the work that went into this beauty, enjoy if you can find it.
Shy and gentle but still expressive, that's the kind of Ardbeg I'd like to have these days. Top craftsmanship without a lot of frills, the smoke doesn't always have to be powerful - 16.08.2024

http://www.weinkenner.de/2016/ardbeg-originalabfuellungen-aus-2002-old-ten-vs-17yo-39981/ Color: pale gold Nose: soft and green! Green apple, avocado-mus, tea, lots of smoky leather, some vanilla and the scent of lush green tree leaves. The lemon aromas run rather subordinate, and the smoke / peat is capped by fruity-fresh aromas. Taste: Very soft, creamy and round. Lime, butter, cream and a medicinal maritime spiciness with lots of pepper, smoky peat and delicate bitter wood aromas. Here, too, notes of dried herbs and stinging nettles crystallize towards the end of the taste. Finish: Medium length with delicate bitter wood that is steadily increasing. Paired with dried herbs, leather, malt; a peaty-dry mouthfeel stays on the tongue. 88 points (nose: 89 / taste: 88 / finish: 86)
Maybe you expected more "Islay" but this is how Ardbeg was in the past, with less smoke and peat.

Ardbeg Guaranteed 17 Years Old – The Ultimate – Single Islay Malt Scotch Whisky, Ardbeg Distillery Ltd, 40%. Green bottle 5cl miniature coded 9 011 5ML 09:41 and a fill level just at the base of the neck. Consumed Nov 2025. Dark golden orange. Aroma is very muted. Sandstone. Flinty. Woolly. Warm water – sea water. Slight margarine. Not very expressive, very flinty. Body is watery to lightly oily. Taste is similar to the aroma – quite muted, brine with a light oak influence, just a faint impression of burnt wood. Breathy finish has some menthol or pine freshness along with the char. A touch waxy with a building smoke. Nicely subtle. Delicate and easy drinking. You’d need at least 50ml to really get into it – it’s a slow-burn. Tasty stuff though. It gets the slight benefit of the doubt from 3.525/84 to 3.55/85.
I own a bottle with the code L7 338 4 ML (Dec., 4. 1997) - this one is very good!

This Ardbeg is rather light in the glass. The first sniff on the glass puts you immediately to the sea. The aromas of iodine and sea day together with the light smoke, peat and peach notes are a pleasure for the nose. The maritime impression continues in the taste. Here you will find the combination of harsh elements such as smoke and peat and the sweet units such as peach and other fruits in their most beautiful form. The finish is long and fruity. For a Ardbeg almost mild and yet a typical Islay whisky. The sea air and sweet fruits put you on vacation.
A great example of what Ardbeg made 'in the days'. I absolutely love this stuff, as it is exactly what I want, and expect ... (sorry expected) of this distillery. It grows on me every time I had a wee dram. It bit me and started a 'whisky-crazy' Please Ardbeg ... bring this back Keep your honour and stop making too young & unbalanced crap .... PLEASE!

Very round and nice fruity. But not enough powerful.
Toffee, butter, sooty and briny peat smoke, banana bread, yellow fruits, but red berries as well. Balanced and pleasant nose. Sweet and mild, but finely crafted, nuanced and complex with a relatively long finish. Would like some more complexity that isn't solely cask driven, and higher abv, but this is really good for a 40%.
Good whisky. Very round and elegant. Grinded for my taste. The smoke and the squish of the 10 year old were taken a bit too strong.
None of the flavors is dominant, all are nicely integrated. Very tasty.

This almost eighteen year old from Ardbeg, replaced in 2006 by the Air Nam Beist, has a level of ppm more than Blasda: but that different personality ...! Much more body, in spite of the gradation, really creamy and chewable; light, of course, but precisely because of this dangerously drinkable ... Perfect balance between peached marinity and a sweetness of caramel and vanilla, really good. Tips of strawberry jam at the finish, and especially after a bit 'cheese tips (grain, to be precise ...) to the nose. Remarkable, an Ardbeg easy but with personality
Somehow disappointing for a 17 year old. With more Vol% he would certainly be better.

The somewhat tame Ardbeg. The corners and edges of the 10y were rounded off.
Wonderful fruit and smoke!
The smell is relatively light, but very delicate, very light peat, Islay island's milky fragrance and perfume in the 1980s, the taste is relatively simple, the wine is thin, and the greatest significance of tasting this wine is to feel the 80s The style of Abbe is now.
