Дымный, солёный Caol Ila из бочки из-под рома (2-я заливка) — торфяной костёр, ваниль и жёлтые фрукты; прямолинейный, но крепкий и выгодный по цене. Опытные ставят чуть ниже: влияние рома и сложность спорны.

В аромате — дым тлеющего костра и сигарного пепла, сладкая ваниль, солёно-морская нота и жёлтые тропические фрукты (ананас, банан, манго), плюс лимонная кислинка, зелёное яблоко, персик, абрикос и лёгкий табак. Во вкусе крепкий (свыше 57%) торфяной дым сочетается с солью, чёрным перцем в духе Talisker, пряной дубовой горчинкой и умеренной сладостью; влияние рома от второй заливки многие называют сдержанным, оно раскрывается спелыми кислыми экзотическими фруктами и заметнее проявляется с водой и проветриванием. Послевкусие средней длины и длинное, перечное, землистое, солёное, с лакрицей, дымом и дубовой горечью; спирт у большинства встроен хорошо, хотя кое-кто отмечает жар и слишком быстрый уход дыма. Оценки согласованы плотно (в основном 84–87), профиль дистиллерии узнаваем и хвалят соотношение цены и качества (около 45–47 €). Расхождения касаются глубины: опытные ревьюеры оценивают сдержаннее и прямо сомневаются в удачности выдержки в ромовой бочке и в сложности напитка, называя его простым и прямолинейным; часть менее опытных, напротив, считает ром приятным сюрпризом, раскрывающимся с водой. Критика сходится на том, что богатый аромат не полностью переносится во вкус, а без воды виски резковат и переусердствует с дымом.

A nice trail of cigar ash. Then the peat rises, loaded with a vanilla sweetness. Cane sugar, reeds, sweet potatoes, blond tobacco, lime, pineapple. The peat remains very intense. Bananas frecinettes. On the palate, the influence of the rum is clearer, citrus and white fruits, pineapple, papaya, grapefruit. A texture close to that of sunflower oil. Very present spices, cumin and pepper. Long finish, quite powerful, liquorice, prickly pears, cola and caramel. Tamarind. Another version of the budget whisky that arrived this week and another whisky from a rum barrel. The longer it stays in the glass, the more mild and friendly it becomes, the alcohol in the aroma is completely imperceptible despite over 57%. The aroma is wonderful, for €47 it's worth buying.

Финиш 86 medium long, earthy, spicy, with a touch of salt, red forest berries, pineapple nectar, soot, peat smoke and oak bitterness, warming finish with a taste of heather honey

Another Caol Ila from the 100 Proof Edition by Signatory. Batch #10 of the series was also a Caol Ila, 2 years younger, but from the Oloroso butt and hogshead. Here the whisky is 10 years old, but the maturation in 2nd fill rum barrels is not something that particularly appeals to me. I find rum maturation difficult. glen-efze.de

Caol Ila is always a good choice. The #11 from the 100 Proof series by Signatory Vintage. This bottling is also a PLV banger. You get what you would expect from a Caol Ila. Nice smoke, salt and vanilla on the nose. Plus honey and sour lemon. The taste continues like this too. First it is sweet, then it becomes spicy, then comes the smoke. Then the smoke, the vanilla and the citrus fruits. The finish matches the aromas completely. The alcohol is well integrated and the whisky is easy to drink without water. Great bottling!

Nase: Süß, Vanille, Rauch, Erdnuss, leichte Zitrone, Malz, Eiche, maritim ••• Geschmack: Süß, Rauch, würzige Eiche, Gewürze, maritim, Vanille, Malz ••• Abgang: Mittellang, süße Malznoten, etwas Vanille und maritimer Rauch bleiben. ••• Fazit: In der Nase wird man von einer tollen süßen Vanille und einem schönen Lagerfeuerrauch begrüßt. Erdnuss, eine leichte Zitrone, Malz und Eiche gibt es ebenfalls. Eine maritime Note ist auch da. Im Geschmack hat er Kraft. Süßer Rauch und würzige Eiche gibt es zu Beginn. Gewürze, maritime Noten , Vanille und Malz folgen. Ein schöner, unkomplizierter und gradliniger Whisky. Nicht großartig komplex, aber das was er macht, macht er gut. Fehlnoten habe ich keine. Die Alkoholstärke gibt ihm Kraft und passt gut. Ich mag ihn. ••• 87

In short, I'm not a typical Caol Ila fan, this one has a nice, pleasant, bacony, salty smoke that is very intense, but doesn't pop; it interacts pretty well from start to middle to finish with the very salty note (a bit like Talisker) and then with these funky yellow fruits... overripe mango/banana that is rotting towards the end... creamy, mushy, sweet, sour with the smoke and the intense salty note. In my opinion, it's not a whisky for 2-3 glasses, but for a nice summer evening as a final glass with funk and pep... yes, it's well suited for that and I found it best with the Secret Orkney.

typical Caol Ila notes, quite robust smokiness, rather on the dry and spicy side, Talisker-like pepper, briny, saline, cask influence is subdued, rum notes are subtle but there is a certain presence of ripe acidic exotic fruits like passion fruit and banana flavored candy without being too funky, it really blends well with the distillery profile and smokiness, takes a lot of water and keeps revealing, stewed quince, even has something umami going on. Will probably get better with more aeration. Great variation on your usual 'peat monster' and amazing deal at 45€ in 05/2024

Very nice bottling. Storage in a rum barrel adds sweetness to the smoke and peat aromas. Value for money!

Caol Ila is not usually my favorite. It was included in the tasting of the 100 Proof Editions and was a pleasant surprise. Without water, it's too smokey and unpolished. With varying amounts of water and air, it becomes really tasty and the rum notes dominate, with a tasty smoky profile in the background. A clear recommendation at this price.

Solid whisky. If you want more exotic notes, you'll be well served here.

Вкус 84 Relatively dry, little fruit, smoke and vanilla notes.
Финиш 82 Unfortunately, it doesn't transport the great notes from the nose very well onto the tongue. What remains is smoke, oak notes and a slightly creamy taste.

Without water I didn't see much influence from the rum. With water there is a lovely yellow sweet fruit that gives a nice counterbalance to the smoky whisky.

The Caol Ila 100% Proof Edition is interesting in terms of price. I think the whisky is very straightforward, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I experienced pleasant flavors, but nothing really convinced me. Caol Ila has never been a bad choice, but for my taste, I'd put it behind my Laphroaig 10 Year Old. The 2nd Fill Rum Barrel didn't convince me.
Нос 78 I smell primarily peat. Behind that, a few fresh red berries appear. Finally, I detect a lot of polished wood. I don't detect any vanilla aromas at all. The alcohol is surprisingly low considering its age. I think the whisky is very straightforward, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Вкус 78 Quite a lot of black pepper, still very pleasant smoky aromas. Reminds me of a cold campfire and lots of ash. The sweetness doesn't come through for me.
Финиш 82 The finish is peppery again, followed later by a light honey sweetness, and here, too, the peat is subtly present. I find the finish particularly surprising; I hadn't expected it.
