Мощный торфяно-хересный Caol Ila крепости бочки: костровой дым, кислая вишня, цитрус и тёмный шоколад при отлично спрятанном спирте. Общая оценка высокая, но один опытный дегустатор счёл дым почти мёртвым, а часть отмечает молодость и цену.

В аромате доминирует плотный костровой дым с солёными морскими и цитрусовыми нотами, поверх которых идут кислая вишня, тёмные сушёные фрукты, изюм, лесной мёд, ваниль, сосновая хвоя и оттенки влажной лесной подстилки; хересная составляющая присутствует, но не забивает характер вискокурни. Во вкусе — маслянистое, полнотелое начало, затем пряность (перец, гвоздика, корица), сладость спелых цитрусов, манго, апельсина и вишни, тёмный шоколад, орех и карамель, всё несомое насыщенным дымом; спирт при крепости около 58–60% почти неощутим и хорошо встроен. Послевкусие длинное, солёно-дымное, с вишней, какао, ванилью и мягкой дубовой горчинкой, у некоторых с кожей и мятой. Опытные ревьюеры оценивают образец максимально высоко (91–92), отмечая брутальную мощь, гармонию и типичный характер Caol Ila, причём разбавление водой скорее приглушает его достоинства; купаж хересной и бурбонной бочек хвалят за баланс. Расхождение задаёт один авторитетный дегустатор с оценкой 84, у которого дым «мёртвый от бочки» и почти неразличим, а профиль сводится к сливочно-вишнёвому. Среди остальных согласованность высокая (в основном 87–92): критика касается не вкуса, а молодости десятилетнего виски (нехватка глубины) и болезненно высокой цены с маркетинговой подачей серии; одна низкая оценка (80) обусловлена именно ценой при хорошем аромате.

Given my taste preferences mentioned at the beginning, the whisky couldn't have been a better choice. The Caol Ila is brutally powerful, monstrously tasty and incredibly addictive. Diluted with water, however, the grim horseman armed with a bow became a neatly clad dressage rider with a penchant for gymnastic accuracy, so I refrained from watering down the dram any further.
Нос 91 The alcohol is excellently hidden behind salty clouds of cool Atlantic air with lemony-fresh accents that alternate with the smell of sweet-sticky tar, expressively fruity sour cherry compote and peppery-spicy bonfire smoke. A typical Caol Ila that blows my nose!
Вкус 91 Lush sweetness meets heavy peat smoke, noble spicy dark chocolate and roasted lemons. Everything is voluminous, powerful and yet harmonious at the same time. A joyful slap on the inside of my cheeks! I shudder of awe, and my tongue dances pogo!
Финиш 90 I feel like I'm chewing on coal candy. Behind this I have pleasantly roasted nuts and an extra portion of dark chocolate with impressive roasting flavours.

Perfect whisky. Alcohol completely hidden, almost imperceptible, despite the fact that it is close to 60%. Wonderful aroma, amazing taste with all the attributes in the form of ripe, juicy citrus fruits, where mango and ripe orange come to the fore, but also bitter chocolate that lasts and lasts. The finish is long, well-balanced, with the addition of mint, cocoa beans, ripe cherries and delicate oak bitterness. And the whole is beautifully covered with peat smoke and aromas of pine needles. I must have her!!!

Финиш 92 long, pleasant, fruity with ripe black cherries in the foreground, followed by the sweetness of cocoa beans, delicate oak bitterness, tingling on the tongue. Warming finish with lemongrass and mint leaf.

... A BEAST ... better than expected ... SMELL sweet, malty peat smoke, dark caramel, sour cherries, vanilla blossom and black pepper. FLAVOR very intense with a wonderful sherry aroma. Blackcurrants can be found along with raisins and dried dates. Sweet vanilla yoghurt, cinnamon, cloves and toasted almonds are accompanied by strong peat and roasted aromas. In the FINISH medium with charming spice and fruit cake with vanilla cream and leather.

Tasty and versatile malt. Dark fruit aromas and sherry are already dominant, but there are enough other things that it doesn't get boring.
Нос 87 An agreeable and quite intense peat smoke first hits the nose. In addition malt and spices such as pepper, cloves and some cinnamon with a little burned dark gravy. Fruits are not long in coming. A little citrus or grapefruit with red fruits after sour cherries, grapes. Forest honey brings a light sweetness. I still recognize subtle raisins, plum must and some cocoa. In the background it gets more woody, musty, slightly damp forest floor.
Вкус 87 On the palate, the smoke and the fruits of cherries, grapes, oranges and plums are dominant again for me. Slightly tingling on the tongue, not really spicy. Alcohol is hardly noticeable. The spices and that honey sweetness step back a bit. Somehow a nice dark fruity sherry. There is also chocolate, some cinnamon and a light walnut note. Seems a little tart and slightly bitter, gives a slightly furry, but still fruity-sweet mouthfeel towards the end. Some vanilla tobacco and roasted aromas in the background.
Финиш 86 Long finish, fruity and sweet, cocoa, light oak spice again provides a warming mouthfeel.

Signatory Vintage has released the Horseman and Archangel series and this is the first of four riders. It is a 10 year old Caol Ila that was bottled at 58.4% ABV. First of all, the alcohol is very well integrated. Matured in a sherry butt and in a bourbon hogshead, this Caol Ila really impresses me. Both the sherry and the bourbon have left their mark without overpowering the character of the Caol Ila. There is a lot of smoke on the nose, as well as salt and vanilla. Cherries and red berries, as well as citrus fruits. Musty wood lying on damp forest floor is in the background. The taste starts off oily before a spiciness sets in. Then it becomes sweet and fruity before the smoke comes in. There is also caramel, nut and chocolate. The finish is salty smoke, cherries and vanilla. Once again I notice that Caol Ila always works. Great bottling from Signatory Vintage and I'm excited to see how the other riders perform. The first rider definitely completely convinced me.

Nase: süß, Kirsche, dunkle Trockenfrüchte, Rauch, Gewürze, Eiche | Geschmack: süß, würzig, Rauch, Kirsche, dunkle Trockenfrüchte, dunkle Schokolade, Eiche, Gewürze | Abgang: Mittellang; süße Noten, getrocknete Kirsche, Rauch und leicht moderige Eiche mit Gewürzen bleiben. | Fazit: In der Nase gehst es süß mit Rauch los. Dunkle Kirsche und dunkle Trockenfrüchte kommen anschließend. Dazu gibt es Gewürze und Eiche. In manchen Momenten habe ich Vanillepudding. Der Geschmack beginnt intensiv. Süßer, würziger Antritt mit Rauch. Kirsche und dunkle Trockenfrüchte gesellen sich dazu. Dunkle Schokolade und Eiche habe ich ebenfalls. Zum Ende hin, bleiben Gewürze im Mundraum übrig. Ein schöner Raucher. Man merkt hier etwas das junge Alter, da es an Tiefe fehlt. Aber für seine 10 Jahre ist er schon vernünftig. Viele süße Noten, Kirsche, Vanille und Rauch. Der Alkohol ist gut eingebunden. | 87 Punkte

I really like the smell. The design is also great. Otherwise it's a bit weak. The price ultimately ruins it.

After the package with the Archangel and the Horseman had arrived, not only the former but also the Caol Ila had to be tasted directly. Yes, the price hurts, but if the Horseman is as convincing as the Archangel, then the purchase was worth it... So this is also the first tasting after the malt was allowed to breathe for about 30 minutes - I tasted it him to Ben Nevis.
Нос 90 Yes, there's a mighty campfire blazing on the cool Atlantic beach in the evening. Slightly fresh notes, most likely citrus fruits, rise, which for me in combination with the campfire smoke are characteristic of Caol Ila. The distillery character is therefore directly present, which speaks for the malt. The high alcohol content never bothers the nose and carries the clear but not obtrusive sherry aromas wonderfully to the nose, where they remind me most of sour cherries and forest honey. Now there are also impressions of coal.
Вкус 91 This bottling is also convincing on the tongue: Here, too, a typical Caol Ila slides into the mouth and fills it with its campfire smoke and sour cherries. The counterpoint is set by the harmonious tannins and the citrus impressions. Everything is carried by the voluminous body. An association with walnuts comes to mind. The whisky is incredibly spoke-stimulating.
Финиш 90 The finish is also here - similar to the Archangel - intense and long lingering. Sour impressions and campfire smoke - also coal - persist. This is where the oak flavors are most likely to develop into a full-bodied 70% chocolate. The pure Sherry Butt would probably have been too heavy and might not have left much of a Caol Ila either, so that the Bourbon Hogshead probably has a very positive effect on this great bottling. Well done, definitely.

Odor ___________________________________ 90 Flavor ______________________________ 92 Departure ___________________________________ 94 What a beast! In the smell nice malty peat smoke and peppery. Then strong sherry flavor, peaty and in the end I actually feel like I'm chewing on wood. They called him Horseman 01 - the first horseman of the apocalypse, after the first glass you know why!
