Quick hit review. I've previously reviewed two newer batches of Compass Box Hedonism, but this one is slightly different. Refined sugar, geranium and fennel kick off the nose, it's more floral than I expected. On the palate, familiar notes of honey, custard and spearmint mingle with white chocolate and tannins. The refill casks push through in the mildly dry finish, creating a minor dissonance. It's good to see that the quality has improved over the years. RATING: 3.5/5.0 stars ≙ 84 pts → ABOVE AVERAGE
grain, vanilla, herbs, cereals, cloves, cookie dough not bad
Decent enough, but the price seems a bit steep.
Golden color. It's not too oily.

October 2014 N: Light and creamy vanillas with a touch of lemon and varnish T: Not a touch of heat initially. Creamy cereals develop before the heat arrives which in turn develops into a peppery richness. F: The scales swing from sweet to sour and back again. C: Job well done. A well presented modern day single grain. Scores a B- March 2015 N: Again, not dissimilar to Artists Blend, which firmly suggests Compass Box have a consistency attached to a signature profile taste within their range. Developing to sweet, creamy malt, light/sweet lemon and deep chocolate fudge/caramel with cinnamon, mineral, flint and carbon. Young, archetypal grain with good weight and undoubtedly moorish. T: Young spirit quickly becomes more creamy with vanilla and a light varnish. Some pepper appears before another wave of vanilla cream. Its rather 2D but evidently very good quality spirit and casks. Takes time to unravel its simple wares. F: Not surprisingly theres vanilla cream with a lemon merengue edge and sour<sweet oak - thats it but its fab nevertheless. C: Compass Box admit that batches vary alot. This one [July '14] is superior, made up of Cameronbridge 1997 [18-20years] and Port Dundas vintages: 1994 & 1989. Coconut I previously tried two versions of Hedonism, the blended grain that is composed (at least, that’s what I’ve been told) with Cameronbrigde and Cambus single grains. The first was the regular Hedonism from 2009 (of which the one I will try today is simply the new batch) and the Quindecimus at a slightly higher ABV. Let’s see if the current version pleases as well. Someone whispered into my ear that all single grains used for this batch are between 12 and 29 years old and matured on first fill American barrels. On the nose, the first thing that comes to mind is bourbon – that is not very surprising, of course. Some creamy, sweetened butter and vanilla, some corn on the BBQ and a feistly little red pepper. Coconut is not lacking either. The arrival is silky soft and creamy on sweet malt, coconut and pepper – good continuation fo the nose. The spices are a bit louder than on the nose. The finish is short and sweet (literally and metaphorically) on ginger and coconut. While Compass Box had an ironclad reputation for creating fantastic whisky’s, I find this one – while certainly not bad – rather ordinary. Nothing wrong with it, but not special either.
Liquid dessert in a glass. Liqueur-like, luscious and lovely, as befits its name. Also a nice dram to win over folks who usually aren't that much into whisky.

A bit bourbon-like with a soft glue note and a massive dose of vanillin. Super soft , sweet, and creamy. Coconut sweets, custard and brown sugar. There's definitely older stuff in here as well, but its presence is not announced by any vulgar wood notes. Really rounded and polished, like a perfectly smooth pebble at the beach. |

Sweet again, with white chocolate, mint, guava and pineapple. Some soft pepper in the back. Given the strength, outstanding viscosity and silky texture. |

Alas, the weak spot, as was to be expected. There's nothing bad here, but neither is there anything positive that stands out. The grain leaves a certain unmistakable hollowness that lingers in the throat. |
Very nice, straight-forward grain with the typical notes, no more and no less.
Flavors of vanilla cream, toffee and coconut

Either my own senses let me down or I bought a bottle containing something very different from what I tasted at a fair. This stuff was not to my liking.
S 7 Kudos to Compass Box showcasing what quality American oak casks could offer to whisky. The distillate on the other hand is quite reserved. I’m guessing the corn ratio is quite high in this. A beginner’s daily drink, no point digging too deep into this. 81-85 - Another dram welcomed
Maybe not as complex, but nice!
One recognizes immediately that this is a grain whisky. He pleases with clean aromas and the strong caramel note. Only the short finish and the increasing bitterness cloud the impression a bit at the end.

Score for a bottle from around 2006
Creamy whisky bursting with notes from the bourbon cask - vanilla, custard, shortbread, white chocolate, coconut, light spices. A few drops of water help massively.

A blend of grains of an average age of 20 according to people of Compass Box. True to grain whiskeys: sugar, rum and reduced complexity.

Compass Box Hedonism 43%. Aroma buttery caramel, toffee apple, spiritous, mint oil and menthol, touch of raspberry. Body - watery to thin oil. Taste is salty, buttery, menthol. Very similar to aroma but less rich and less cask-led, more spiritous. A buttermint dram with a dry wafer biscuit bitterness. It's okay. A touch spiritous and young seeming. Yes, it's fine. 3.3/79

Just three words to describe this absolutely strange experience for the single malt drinker: Violets, sawdust and oak. As if coming from another planet....

coconut, vanilla, butter. Very soft.
Time to move on now that I've tried a grain-based whisky. The bottle did marginally improve as it oxidized with the biggest improvement coming in when the fill level was at about 1/4-1/3 left ...

A very easy drinker, something that could act as a stepping stone to bourbon for fans of malt whisky? Pleasant throughout, straightforward.

Sweet, tart fruit: white grapes and apple juice. A maple-syrup sweetness, vanilla and oak that immediately reminds me of bourbon, just less cloying and aggressive. Toasted cereal with a touch of pepper. Clear and pleasant, if straightforward. |

A mellow, refined bourbon style whisky. Has those decadent vanilla and caramel notes that appeal to a lot of people. Interesting one to have in a bar

This is the best whisky I have ever tried, it has a beautiful flavour of toasted coconut and caramel. It is light and delicate without being underwhelming. It easily outperform whiskys double the price. It is simply perfection in a bottle.
