Sauternes is just Sauternes, and it shows a lot about octomoru
- a good tasty octomore - despite the high percentage it's really still tasty and pleasant - for 120 to 140€ it's really at the upper limit, tending to rather too expensive
...a very, very good Octomore... only moderate smoke, but a real variety of aromas...! [color:] = gold;

On an iodized base, an extremely soft balance. Delicate, almost tender. The influence of bourbon is felt, honey, lime pulp, but also the wine barrels, sweet, candied white plum, we clearly recognize Sauternes. The beach in a very sunny location. Pastry side, icing sugar, sponge cake. The peat is barely noticeable, and yet it is very strong. It's hard to say otherwise. It is so well integrated that it is in the texture of each scent. But it does not impose itself. Slight astringency all the same. The vanilla is really intense, it's like crunching the grains one by one inside the pod. The addition of water does not bring much, on the contrary. A little charcoal if left to air for a long time. In the mouth, it is very smooth, here too the Sauternes is essential, but also a salty side, oysters, lemonade, then the spices rise, without it being too strong. Coriander, cloves, bay leaf. Mirabelle plums in the finish, then it's rather woody, meaty, duck à l'orange I would say. It's quite long. Very smooth overall, neither plastic nor medicinal touch. Great art. It's extremely impressive, such balance. I am a lover of good Sauternes, suffice to say that I loved it. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2020/11/octomore-102-dialogos-2010-8-yo.html

An octomore is a really nice nightcap, sometimes even more. This one here is a really stable representative of its kind. Somehow it doesn't really inspire me, but somehow I can't give it 87 points either, because it's - again - too individual and cleanly made at the same time. With the Octomore, Bruichladdich has managed to create a whisky that not only has to be a cash cow, but that rarely disappoints a whisky lover (at least if you only bought one sample).

Slight ham smoke, brightly sparkling nectarine fruit, which makes the Sauternes barrel very easy to recognize, and then there is some toasted white bread with salty butter. After 5 minutes in the glass 89 points, after 25 minutes only 88. Here you can smell it for a long time, but there isn't that much in the depth - but that's enough for a nightcap at that age. Not for the price, of course, but that's another story... |

Remains smoky with residual sweetness, already medium long. When the American colleague WhiskyMavens awards 95 points for this whisky, I am surprised at first and shake my head. But when I then see that this whisky lover regularly awards 98, 97 and 96 points, and above all to exciting things that I also like very much, such as the Kavalan Vinho Barrique, many PCs or Paul John, then I find that consistent and very personable. |
Smoke, charred wood, smoked ham, metallic sweetness, with subtle dates wrapped in bacon, a bit of green apple with citrus notes, with light spicy cherry notes. Really exciting. Find the Octomore very complex.

After eight years in the cask, this Octomore was a fascinating mix of sweet, peat, and tires. To be clear, those tire notes were never the sort of new rubber funk that some drams can take on. Rather, they reminded me of the old weathered tires that some playgrounds have, or that you duck and hide behind on a paintball course, or that sit in the middle of an animal pen. It was weathered and old, subtly sweet and slightly earthy. That tractor tire undercurrent ran throughout the entire experience with sweet pastry and sugar overtones balanced on top of it. After an initial impression of vanilla bean, the finish was all chocolate and old tires. I love burnt brownie end pieces and, though this was a tad too sweet for me, I thought there were plenty of those deliciously toasty chocolate pastry notes. Mental Image: Old Sandbox Tractor Tire

This Octomore is one of the very few editions with a peat ppm of under 100. While the peat is relatively soft on the nose, it still dominates the palate and finish. I quite like the influence of the sauternes, it adds an extra fruity sweetness that is totally different than sherry casks.

The hype surrounding Octomore is a bit over. Probably because they are too expensive as standard. However, they are always beautifully created whiskies, including this Octomore. Sautéing is subtly present, beautiful!

It has an oily viscosity and a relatively strong bouquet. I have aromas of dry peat smoke, citrus fruit, maritime notes, honey sweetness, vanilla, pipe tobacco and malty sweetness. Moderately complex. A good balance between sweetness and dryness in terms of taste. The alcohol is well integrated and has a relatively heavy body.
Surprisingly little smoke for an octomore - and that at almost 100ppm? Maybe that's why it's a very good whisky to enjoy - a pleasant combination of dry smoke, sweet aromas with fruity notes, and a sometimes distinctive pepperiness on the tongue.

I’m in love. The peat and Sauternes casks haven’t overwhelmed each other – it’s quite sweet, but balanced by savoury, sour, and smoke. There’s such a great richness, but the finish lightens up in a pleasant and almost refreshing way. Great complexity as well, as expected from Octomore. Wise beyond its years. Nose: Octo-magic. Savoury and salty and spiky and funky, with that familiar sour cream note. Various pork notes – prosciutto, bacon, and brown-sugar-glazed ham. Salted plantain chips, pickled lemon peel, dashi, seaweed salad, and fresh seafood. There’s definitely a heavy sweetness here – vanilla buttercream, crystallized pineapple, manuka honey, white cherries, and elderflower. Sweet sugary barley and burnt marshmallow in the middle. Uh, roast zuchinni? Palate: Medium-oily texture. Honey-sweet and nutty barley up fruit, before the smoky blast. Plum, orange, cantaloupe, pineapple, crème brulee, nori, more prosciutto, and butter. Big medicinal smoke in the middle, smothered in honey. Honey-sweetened black tea, peach cobbler, smoked peach, and lemonade. Ajitama egg, roast fennel, toasted sesame seeds, and nutmeg on the back end. Finish: Long, with the texture lightening up a bit. Honey, fruit cocktail syrup, sweet grapefruit, kosher salami fried in a dirty wok in the woods, brown sugar, and burnt marshmallows. Lots of cardamom and ginger, as well as nutmeg, mint, and candied flowers. Some green grape and lemon juice tartness. Pretty much a Penicillin.

I was allowed to try this dram in the context of a vertical tasting of some Octomores. Color: light amber
Nice dram that takes the Sauternes barrel nicely. Pleasant smoke from the campfire with notes of salt, tar and coal on the nose. Already strong, but not explosive. He leaves a lot of leeway for the barrel and lays on the flavors. At the beginning there is a little bit of glue - not annoying, rather pleasant. Fruit aromas of peach and apricot, later strong vanilla & sugar cane. With water, the nose becomes grassier with crisp apples. In terms of taste, an oil slick lies on the tongue with a broad sweetness. Wonderfully heavy, great mouthfeel. Salt comes up, coal, some seaweed. Well integrated smoke. Not too much about it. Initially sweet, but dry, it becomes distinctly sweet again in the aftertaste. Nice intensity. It stays quite long with coal dust, but not super smoky in the finish.

A pure, smooth complex over achiever. This has to be a result of careful attention to detail such as using exclusively Islay barley. However, I would prefer different finish to this fine dram. I am going back to this Octomore 10.2 after first opening a few weeks ago. The juice needs a good aeration in the glass so that its aromas can be fully expressed. A beautiful dark gold color. A tasty nose of dry apricot and oak influences that stand out, a light peat with a medicinal side. In the mouth it is really rich and very oily, the influence of oak is once again felt, a sweet smoothness, very creamy, slightly caramelized and buttery, some notes of vanilla and candied lemon. A little bitterness in the middle of the mouth. A finish where we still find oak and a lingering smoke, soot, to finish on honeyed notes and orange marmalade. Superbly integrated peat and alcohol. A very nice tasting. I expected big puffs of peat and smoke, whereas on the contrary, we are on something very fine, very delicate, very controlled and above all full of gluttony.
This is by far my most favorite Octomore of them all. And I've had a plenty of them. Not sure if I am biased towards V 0.2's but all the V 0.2's starting from 02.2, 08.2 ,09.2 and of course, 10.2 have consistently wowed me no ends. I am forever torn between them and on any given day, I will hail one from them as against any other Octomores as my absolute favorites. There is very little to discern between the different V 0.2's, that said, 10.2 has consistently won in my blind tastings, may be not by much, but still enough to make it to my most favorite of all Octomore's released to date.

Nose: Have you ever tried freshly fried bacon on honey bread? I don't, but that's what comes to mind first when nosing! Oak seasoning and herbal notes follow. I also notice apricot jam, nuts and some ash. After adding water there is a hint of milk chocolate. • Taste: The smoke is not as strong as expected, the Octomore is sweet and spicy with a little dry oak. A full and rather oily mouthfeel! There is still some chilliness. With a few drops of water, the smoke is reduced and citrus and herbal notes appear. • Outlet: The finish is medium long and very creamy! Sweet and spicy aromas dominate here.

Given time of year, a treat should be had by all!…opening of a £100+ bottle of whisky, I chose this and glad I did. Sweetness from Sauternes cask is there but as always peat takes over in an octomore, which for me is a good thing! Maybe a lower %age abv for octomore which is more palatable but still needs water. Barley flavour (after being rubbed in hands) on nose is beautiful. More specifically, getting peach, dried fruits, peat smoke and a long warm finish. Great whisky..
blast of salty peat quite a bit of liquorice. After a little while and after more nosing the tropical fruits come in. Icing sugar and sweet lemon syrup. Great nose. Good mouthfeel. Full and can chew on this for a while. Strong on the tinned fruits. And lemon brine. Quite A salty tang Alittle ash in the finish. Medium long finish. A great dram.
Light cigars, lemons, gasoline. Fruits (strawberries, oranges and lemons) smoke like from burnt logs, ash, and a little honey
On the nose the smoke is well-balanced and not too overpowering as it can sometimes be with Octomore. The mouthfeel is pleasantly sweet with a broad palette of evolving flavors from caramel to citrus and woody notes if you give it some time. It feels very oily in that it lingers around in the mouth for quite a while and with some splashes of water different flavors will become more prominent. In my opinion a very well put together whisky with an excellent balance in flavor palette.
Needs little time. Initially felt quite young, unbalanced, and taste somewhat metallic. Every tastes were fighting against each other. (86 at this point) Came back 2 weeks later, and the balance is found. Now the sauterne cask's influence is beautifully interwoven with the peat smoke. Nose: Fruity. Sweet. and of course, Peatsmoke. Kinds of notes that hits upper side of your nose, and up instead of sinking down. Taste: Oily, Sweet, yet not excessive . Hard to believe this much sweetness doesn't feel excessive. Notes found on nosing shows up again, then enters the malt. Not the bready side of the malt but rather slightly stinky side, but in a good way. Finish: Long lingering smoke with the trace of red fruits that aren't actually red (Just before they're fully ripe). Taste of malt also stays.
