В аромате — изящный херес с обилием орехов, ежевикой и тонкими пряностями, оттенками розмарина и кервеля, а также деликатной солёной морской брызгой; насыщенная орехово-пряная основа даёт выраженный характер олоросо, при этом высокая крепость ощущается свежестью, но остаётся хорошо встроенной. Во вкусе сразу приходят сочная ежевика, черника, изюм и карамель, за которыми следует лёгкая солёность и травяные ноты, после чего крепость свыше 62% даёт ощутимый разогрев, уходящий к послевкусию; послевкусие средней длины, ореховое и хересное с пряной ноткой. Небольшое количество воды раскрывает сладость, фруктовость и ореховость, добавляя ванильно-виноградные тона и сохраняя баланс.
Отдельно подчёркивается редкая полнота вкусового спектра — сладость, кислотность, умами, солёность и горечь одновременно, вплоть до образа «солёной клубники и малины», что делает этот бочковой розлив выразительным, но подходящим не каждому. Опытные ревьюеры единодушно высоко оценивают отбор бочки и характер винокурни, ставя от 88 до 92 баллов; критика минимальна и сводится к сомнительной для многих идее солёно-ягодного профиля, спорной цене (£130 против £99 за бурбонную версию) и к тому, что напиток слишком сложен и мощен для начинающих, которым советуют сперва попробовать 12- или 15-летние выпуски.

It has to be said that this is not a beginner's whisky. If you're new in your (Pulteney) journey: try the 12 or the 15. This one will just whallop and confuse you as the flavour range is simply immense - ranging from sweet, sour & umami over to salty and bitter. It is rare that you find all 5 of these in a whisky, and both this Pulteney Distillery Exclusive and its bourbon counterpart (WB ID 230475) have it, which is a testament to the Distillery Manager's selection and ability to pick out unique and interesting casks that are packed full of flavour and do not swamp the distillery character. There's literally a ton to discover (think salty strawberries & raspberries), and at the same time it won't be for everyone's pallate - because: who likes the idea of having salty raspberries? Well, to me it's very interesting, and at the end of the day that's what the continues to make the journey interesting - to me anyway. It basically has everything you can ask for and expect from an officially released single cask. Price was £130 at the distillery, which I found bizarre considering the 16 year old bourbon was "only" £99. In my mind they were £115 each as I got them both. Note to self: I absolutely NEED to try the new make next time I make it up to Wick - I'm sure the very friendly people there won't mind me having a taste.

A very exciting Pulteney, very fruity, very strong and really spicy. I find the nose to be the showpiece of this malt, followed by the mouthfeel that gives the oloroso notes a strong, spicy expression. Things get a little drier on the finish, but the spice remains. For me a 92-point pleasure (93-92-91) after the first tests. It's the same here: If you take small sips, the pure strength of over 60% is also well tolerated on the palate. _Some water_ makes the Pulteney sweeter, fruitier, and nuttier. Now vanilla-grape notes are added. The sherry influence remains present but complementary. The herbs provide another fine addition. The malt is also sweeter in the mouth, now with a little less heat and yet the full spice and herb ration. A very nice variant, which also keeps the aroma balance surprisingly well in the overall picture. This Pulteney was born for water features. For me in the first water tests a 92.5 point pleasure (93-92.5-92).

The sherry is intense, but by no means "put on", the nuttiness in combination with the spice gives a wonderfully intense Oloroso aroma. The 62.3% give a light freshness and fine density, but are "well integrated", as the saying goes. |
