More sherry-driven than #15 and #23. It beats both. Superb value for money.

Funky sulphur giving an impression of salted caramel. Blackcurrant jam, cashew and peat. Water adds apple. |

As a HP fan, I would not recommend this. Buy one of those sherried "Reserve Casks" Orkneys from Elixir Distillers instead, they are of a much better quality (and free of sulphur).

Definitely some sulphur (matchstick heads; lit firework fuses). Meaty sherry, licorice, mushrooms, faint smoke. Better without the addition of water. |

A nice sweetness, but also considerable, hard-to-tame heat. The spiciness never goes away completely, no matter how much you dilute it. The sulphur also keeps popping up. Not ideal. |

Some nicely ashy HP impressions along with a soft red-berry jamminess, but everything remains very simple and unimpressive. Sulphuric aftertaste. |

A strong, hunty, heavy sherry whisky. Pure 84b But when it drips, it remains much fruitier with dark honey, blueberry jam - great and it's only 89b
Mildly peaty, dry vegetation, a whiff of sulfur, umami, dark dried fruits (mostly berries), with some nuttiness and a hint of honey at the back. It's fine, but not the big bang for your buck one might expect. There's much better HP single casks and small batches out there from independents.

Fruity heather, mountain honey, iodized freshness with a malty touch, some floral fragrances. Milk chocolate, and a light peat in the background. Creosote. Caramelized roundness, nougatine, pulpy mirabelle plums. Quince jam. On the palate, it is very balanced, very smooth, cereals in the middle of the honey, roasted wheat, toasted barley, then spices are felt, gray pepper, cumin. Spicy finish, clove, fresh wheat, Frécinette banana, bamboo stem, dry earth, shortbread biscuits. Churned butter. The Sherry is not overpowering, on the contrary, there is a very nice balance between the influence of the cask and that of the distillate. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2025/01/orkney-hp-2010-100-proof-edition-30-14.html

After having had some 100 proof SV's, this whisky was a positive exception. Not so monolithic on sherry, and especially on the nose, even with some complexity. Having said that, to me this is still a bit on the sweet and unpolished side to make it a top class dram. Still very good, especially if you consider the price/quality ratio.

Heather smoke, twiggy peat, a full cabinet of nuts (walnut, almond, peanut), date, a bit of beef stock, later also stewed apricot and orange zest, and finally honeyed cereal. It's a bit edgy maybe, but it certainly has quite some complexity and it's not a blunt sherry monster. |

Sweeter than expected, but quite hot too. This needs water. It is less complex than on the nose. Mainly walnut skin, sweetened oloroso sherry, date, honey, a hint of heather honey and peat. The notes of cooked fruit and citrus are mainly absent, instead a bit of dunnage and wood. |

Quite long, a bit acidic and hot on chili pepper. Next to that, still walnut, honey, sweet and nutty sherry, wood. |

It took me a while to find the sweet spot with water, as I find it a bit too sharp in terms of alcohol when drunk neat. But at just under 50% I get a wonderfully roasted, herbal sherry whisky with lovely moments of dried fruit and a hint of snuff. Not too intrusive from the cask. A lovely, accompanying but subtle smokiness, especially in the finish. Great value for money.

High expectations from SV were left unfulfilled. Flat, sherry HP with a slight smoke. One-dimensional and goes away too quickly without a goodbye. Pleasant but easy drinking. There is a better option, SV 2005 19yo 54.4%.

Open the bottle and your first glass is a delicious raw Highland Park with a light sulphur bite. Fortunately, something different from those smooth sherry bombs. At first, the oloroso is clearly present. Sweet red fruits, smoky and a bit of sulphur (you have to like that). As the bottle empties, this HP oxidizes into a beautiful full sherry whisky with a very small pleasant edge. The aftertaste could be a bit longer.

Yet again a decent priced one. A 14yo HP for under €50,- who could have believed that two years ago? This one needs to breath and needs a splash of water.

There is definatly some sulphur here. Yet it fades away over time. There is a hardy sherry note in this whisky which I find a little strange with Oloroso, one would expect that with PX. In the background there is a subtle smokiness, which is not dominant at all. Also some bbq meat comes to mind when adding water |

Initially the oloroso is clearly present. It gives sweet red fruits, like sweet cherries and some red berries. There is a sweet smokiness in the background. But without water everything is a little hot. With water everything tamed down well and is more integrated. |

Medium-long length. A bit hot without water, yet the oloroso sweetness pops up quite well. Red fruit lollypop comes to mind. It continues to linger on with sweet smoke notes and a hint of wood. |

I liked the previous edition of Secret Orkney, number 15, much better. This one is much more sherry-like and certainly more boring than the previous version. The basic aromas of the distillate are also recognizable in this one, but they lack the distinctiveness...

Seems extremely young, with nasty new-make notes. Sulphur in the finish, furry on the tongue.

Initially a nice, but contrived sherry half-hop. After several months in the open bottle, a not insignificant sulfur note has become apparent. Unfortunately, it's getting worse.
aroma: dense, rounded, red wine, acidity, rancidity taste: rounded, red wine, berries, tannins, solidity Too woody for me. Heavy, dense taste and smell.
3rd pour out of a 2 month old bottle, not getting better, but not getting worse either. Totally drowned in sherry, I prefer Highland Park to be more nuanced and less predictable. Not bad sherry casks, not great either, but 2nd or 3rd fill would have been better. Better reduced to the high 40s.

Even after reduction and almost an hour long breathing time, it is still hot. I appreciate youth when it is not monolithic (Springbank 10) or when there is strong peat involved (Laga 8), but neither is the case here. One gets a lot of oak and a lot of sherry (red fruits, nuts, chocolate), and little else beyond the mentioned hotness. Where is the HP character? There are faint hints of honey and weak wet-herbal elements, but also some considerable bits of sulphur that do not help such a limited profile. Okay, fairly replaceable. |

Much better here. While not very complex, still more diverse and rich than the flat nose. Fairly oily, both malt and sherry sweet, a well balanced wood spiciness. Still young, but in a much more engaging way. The sweet malt and honey-caramel notes on the back palate are delicious and complex since they harmonize well with the presence of very active oloroso casks. A clear step up. |

Medium short to medium, inoffensive. The sherry becomes a slight fruity and leathery dustiness with chocolate tobacco, followed by some faint malt and prickly spices. At the very end it gets worse and plain alcoholic, yet the impression is thankfully fleeting, followed again by a flat sherry maturation with some vegetal undertones. In the end, a pseudo-bargain IMO. |
Acceptable with a few drops of water. However, it unfortunately can't compete with the original manufacturer's Cask Strength bottlings from HP. No way. Without added water, the rating is significantly lower, so it's a good "floater". The slight dilution brings out more dark fruits, light leather, and fresh pipe tobacco. And the honey, which shines through in the nose and mouth, softens its sharp edges. I still can't taste a true Highland Park, though; the heather is completely missing. Smoke? Nowhere to be found. Don't overdo it with the water, my sweet spot is around 48-51% ABV dilution.

This is grossly underrated on here. What a sensational HP. Probably the best 100 Proof edition, hands down.
5cl Sample: Nose: Cherry, strawberry, caramelized chocolate, with the herbal notes and the very light smoke of the HP clearly recognizable. The mouth is also initially fruity, with the cherry, a nice start, but needs water for me. Then slightly bitter chocolate notes and the very light smoke predominate, which in turn evokes herbal associations. I really like it. The age is also perfect—not too young and immature or too one-dimensional, nor does it have the exceptional depth of an even older whisky, but a nice middle age. That's what an HP should be, and at a very fair price.

This malt offers a rich and complex profile, with a nose that blends peat smoke, heather, vanilla, oak spice, and citrus zest. On the palate, it delivers sweet malt and dried fruit balanced by black pepper, herbal notes, and a salty, briny nuance. The finish is long and warming, showcasing lingering smoke, spicy oak, earthiness, slight bitterness, and a faint sweetness.
one of my favorite SV 100 proof series
