Quick hit review. 309 ppm and a whopping ABV of 61.2%, this Octomore is not for the faint-hearted. Dusty peat smoke, black pepper and sea salt hit the nose before ripe tropical fruits begin to shine through - what a great combination. On the palate, sweet, spicy and dry flavors arrive hand in hand, this is quite intense. Pears, guava and caramel are flanked by peppery smoke, while grapefruit, ash and some bitter tannins push into the lasting finish. This young malt packs a punch! From an Octomore you should always expect something extreme, so what do you expect from the most extreme Octomore? All there is to say; if you enjoy Octomore, this one doesn't disappoint.
Нос 93 Smoky, oh yes. Cured meat, dark chocolate. Give it and yourself some time, and it is surprisingly fruity.
Вкус 95 Mindblowing acomplishment for the peathead. Very drinkable neat, but quite a bit tastier with a drop or two of water. Tar, rubber, tobacco, leather, meat. Surprisingly sweet, with quite a few fruits.
Финиш 93 At the edge of extremely long. Slow fade of smoke and spice, it sticks and goes on and on. Don't start the evening with this one if you have anything else in the line-up.

Wonderful peaty, without the smokiness. If someone wants to know the difference between peat and peatsmoke: give them an Octomore, and an Ardbeg.

Absolutely loving it, 89 now. The bottle has been opened for over 2 years and the taste has developed into a more silky sweet texture.

Easy to drink and surprisingly fruity Octomore, the 309 ppm phenol is not exaggerated.
Andytka3 83 06 mar 2019 5:11 am
N- Oozing of phenol with heavy splash of ink initially. Rather nervous starts with doses soapiness, that aside, good malt that swims well on the hefty strength, Horlicks, burn leaf, herb-y peat and even some flower petals nuance, may not be very 'Islay', but no problem, as it is still rich and all well. Hazelnut chocolate, smoked liquorice and quite a nice treat of Chinese waxed sausage. Sweet nutty underlay, as Surge described it best as Satay Sauce. But can't seem to air out disturbing soapy powder fragrant smells. (86/20) P- Very good texture reveals as the liquid dissolved on the palate, sweetness that linger well with spicy ginger, wasabe, toasted oak and vanilla. Meaty and well build, full, traces of roasted nuts. (87/21) F- Medium-long, smooth, echoing dry mouthfeel with spicy strength linger on. Minty. Wee short on depth. (87/21) B/B- 87/21 Cereal- 1, Fruity- 1, Floral- 2, Peaty- 4, Feint- 3, Sulphur- 0, Woody- 2, Winery- 3 Weighted Rate- 83pt — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

In terms of taste, this is nowhere near the smokiest whisky in the world, otherwise decent, no off-notes and drinkable without water, but I've had better Octomores

Surprisingly fruity Octomore and one of the best I have tried so far. It will set you back almost 200 EUR though, which is quite expensive.

I am not an Octomore connoisseur as I have only tried a few but this is excellent stuff. Not sure about the price. Thanks to Peatbogger for the sample.
Нос 91 Yeah essence of Balrog having a barbecue in Hell. Strong chorizo meat. A well manured horses stable, I always get that note on the strong ones. Smokey bacon crisps The fruit notes are there but they are only slight. I was in my whisky room nosing this with the door shut and my wife could smell it as she walked past on her way to bed. "What is this new devilry "
Вкус 92 I would never guess this was 61%. Even after giving it a good chew there is hardly any burn and it goes down easy. I wouldn't say this was a real peat smack in the mouth, more like a few jabs. The fruit notes are more noticeable in the taste than on the nose. In fact it is very well balanced believe it or not.
Финиш 93 The finish as you would expect is very long. In fact I will probably still taste it in the morning. And again those fruit notes are even more prominent on the death.

- a very good malt, better taste than the 8.1 but behind the 8.2 - however P / L for € 280 disaster (not included in the rating) Too expensive to drink.

Peat surge. Like a tidal wave, it floods the nostrils. Pure peat, not really smoked or marinated, just a little vegetal. It's a blast, an earthquake. But very quickly, vinous fragrances set in. And it's as if the peat slipped away, to highlight a gourmet, fruity wine, with icing sugar, Mirabelle plum, Reine-Claude, lemon pulp, lychee, pineapple, grapefruit. We guess the coal and the soot in the background, the peat returns, even more violent. With the addition of water, it takes on its full extent, iodine is invited, something earthy, cereal, which is added to pastry cream, sponge cake, fruit. Crispy honey cookies. Sourdough bread. The hot crumb. On the palate, very slight astringent acidity, then it is smooth, and the spices settle in, cumin, pepper, paprika, curry, saffron. Tomato, peach, melon, red berries. Very long finish, on mango, then spices, finally wood, very sparkling, cola, ends on dry land, a trail of charcoal, pinch of fine salt, chocolate milk. Apricot, persimmon. The peat is certainly important, and even invasive, but it disappears after a while to give way to wonderful vinous and fruity fragrances. This is one of the best Octomore for my taste, perhaps the best of the .3 series, it would be necessary to make a rigorous comparison one day. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2021/12/octomore-2011-masterclass-083-islay.html

CHARACTER This is the ultimate Islay Octomore. A thunderstorm of a dram. Close your eyes as you take the first sip and allow your senses to shut down as you focus on processing this fascinating dram. AROMA Toasted oak and muddy/peaty smoke, bandages. Maple syrup, fresh linen, sea shells. Evokes a memory of lying in the heather on the peat moss, the warm sun coaxing the scent from the wild flowers. The fruit is cherry, peach and mango, with crème brulee and toffee from the oak and barley. TASTE Initially a surprise as the stellar level of peat is bitter and overwhelming. Another sip opens with up with cherry and peach and toasted sweet oak, dark chocolate, boot polish and seaweed. At this level the peat is like a thundercloud, darkening the atmosphere. You can feel it in your bones. FINISH Complex, crème brulee with caramelised brown sugar slightly overdone. Dark plum, orange and kiwi sit well with the malted barley sweetness. The peat smoke is a tremendous presence offering roasted coffee, burnt heather and a place in your memory forever. COLOUR Golden syrup (BRUICHLADDICH DISTILLERY CO.LIMITED.)

No detailed notes, but as an afterdram to a tasting of 6 Cadenhead blends, this one felt very simple and didn't impress me much. An oily body akin to the current Local Barley Springbanks, but neither the nose nor the taste were particularly complex, and a certain farminess ruined it some for me. Neat it smelled like smoked tangerines, but water brought out the farm, which in some contexts (Brora) works great, but in the case of Octomore, the more it's present, the more I'm turned off. Maybe I was just expecting too much?
