21 20 19 20 80 Young pepper whisky, from the “can only be drunk on location” series.. And so you can drink it, and thank you for that, the only question is why?
Even if the nose and taste are absolutely typical for Caol Ila-OA, I can't remember ever having such a sweet OA-Caol Ila in my glass. Fascinating - and very tasty.

Warm, greasy peat smoke, dried seaweed, salty sea air, beach grass: I can't help but think of a summer evening on the beach here, campfire atmosphere, surf, the harbor not far away. Over the fire, tropical fruits on a skewer, warm caramel sweets, vanilla. An absolute feel-good nose. |

Very pleasant, in no way intrusive or burning start. Very dry right from the start, a dryness that I have found in many OA by Caol Ila and therefore consider it "classic". Smoked apricot and peach chunks, warm and spicy peat smoke, smoked ham, dried seaweed, some fresh tar, grated nutmeg, clove powder, pepper, vanilla. Very successful mixture of lightly smoked fruit on the one hand and spicy and maritime aromas on the other. |

Stays for a long time and also delivers a lot of vanilla in the finish. Dry wood to the end, but in the same form as at the beginning on the tongue, neither increasing nor decreasing. Sweet, tangy, peat-smoky fruits. |
Tasted during a sublime BYOB, the 18th of February 2023, in Hotel Haarhuis, Arnhem I wrote down just two words: "very nice!"

Intensively smoky and peaty at first nosing. In the back there is something lemony, maritim and mineral. After awhile I also get weak notes of cookie dough and apple juice. The alcohol is very good integrated. |

Medium long. Dry, oaky and peppery. Remains pleasant. |
A really well-done festival bottling, which is also painfully high-priced, but ultimately is a lot more fun than this year's Fèis Ìle-Lagavulin, which only has 12 Lenze, but is priced at the same level.

The powerful and also extremely multifaceted smoke note is particularly noteworthy here at the beginning. On the one hand, it shows itself with a very nice maritime note in the direction of a fresh sea breeze (mineral, salty, iodine-rich), and on the other hand, it takes you to a historic half-timbered farmhouse, in which a fireplace blazes happily and smoke clouds the whole room, and also the antique furniture, wrapped - and whoops, someone even crumbled a pinch of dry leaves into the fire... very nice impressions. There is also a good portion of vanilla, slightly scorched caramel, malt beer, softened apples, candied lemons, honey, a hint of oak spice and finally a wonderfully dirty note in the direction of motor oil. It tolerates heat extremely well and ensures that it opens even further and releases more and more aromas. At the end there is an exotic, creamy aroma that reminds me of soft ice cream with passion fruit syrup. |

Oh yes, he can keep up on the palate. Powerful attack, flatters and wets the palate with a pleasantly oily layer. The smoke is by no means impetuous here, but has an almost polished and composed-looking character, so that it can resonate with the other aromas, light-footed, spiciness-giving and enriching. In addition liquid caramel, charred wood, sea water (mineral-salty), a pinch of iodine (direction Laphroaig, only a little more elegant), full porridge passion fruit, vanilla, pound cake with lemon aroma, tender oak. |

Mid-length finish. Amazingly accommodating. Hardly any smoke here, but rather sweet in the direction of vanilla, pastries, salty caramel, juicy lemon cake. |

The spices and especially the oak seasoning bother me more than I would like. Otherwise it is a very clear Caol Ila profile. However, there are also significantly cheaper representatives of independent bottlers in the category. Unusually little cold ash for Caol Ila standards. Clearly more fruity, with notes of pear and mirabelle plum.

↑↑↑ Click show in original language Calella is basically my favorite winery, and I was a little disappointed with my initial impressions of this wine. It's actually very winery, very Calrera, but it's very unbalanced.

Even under the premise that I like CI very much, it is still difficult for me to hide a certain degree of dissatisfaction with it; on the smell, it is really great and simple, with a rich malt aroma and a powdery powdery peat flavor After pairing it with the flavor brought by this virgin barrel, the result of the mixture is a little pungent, and even a little closer to those chemical raw materials that are not very comfortable. |

Fruity, malty and sweet, and peaty, but the feeling brought by this wine, the feeling brought by alcohol, is really a bit too much. I have always liked the sense of coordination, that is, the bodied wine, bursting alcohol, with a rich and complex flavor, which makes people aftertaste; the simple and refreshing flavor, with a light and comfortable wine body, makes people relaxed and happy. On the contrary, it just makes people feel very uncomfortable. |

Very tasty Caol IIa with an emphatically fruity side with light citrus notes, some orange zest and oak. No disturbing bitter tones and the alcohol is very well integrated! The 15 years of maturation has made it significantly milder and fruitier than the Lagavulin Feis 2022 with the same barrel combination that was tried in comparison!

First whiff is definitely chalky, like wet pebbles on the beach. After a few moments a delicate peat influence takes center stage, with in the background a subtle meaty note. Every time I pick up the glass there is a new characteristic to be found. A smoky sweetness reveals itself. The constant development is amazing. Classic Caol Ila with an oily, mouth coating feel on the tongue. But also a raw side that I associate with the virgin oak. Like chewing on the sharp side of a chainsaw, the edges cutting deep. Forget Ziggy Stardust, this is Ziggy Sawdust. All in all it feels like failed integration. The oily liquid and the sawdust influence are in a fight, duality at its best. It makes for a complex and interesting drinking experience. Caol Ila succeeds in bottling an expression for the more experienced connoisseur. That is what a Feis Ile bottling should be about; to create discussion. The finish is all on wood but not too overpowering. The pleasant thing is: there is nothing exotic in it. It is clean refill wood Caol Ila, with on top a layer of extra clean new wood Caol Ila. No dirty notes from sherry or other (fortified) wine.
They could have done better. This Cask combo will suit more the lovers of the smoke/sweet combination, more kind of Island style rather than Islay peat. The virgin oak finish stirs the mix one bit too uncontrollably... I expected more for a 15 y old festival edition, the quality goes down in the name of the demand and the (unknown) numbers of bottles... At least is all right for the price. Won it for a hundred quid.

Quite peaty, vanilla, a bit of ash, mint, slight fruitiness, honey, fresh puff pastry, chlorinated pool. Alcohol is quite pronounced. After some time, a bit of ash disappears, and fruitiness is more pronounced (a bit of tropical fruits also). Interesting nose. |

Alcohol punch, smoke, vanilla, wet wood and cardboard, chilli peppers. Wow, alcohol is very strong in this one. It's quite creamy, but very spicy still after a few sips. There is also a constant bitterness that doesn't help with the flavor. So much worse than the nose. |

Wet cardboard, mint, peppers, bitterness, quite long but not in a good way. Little better that taste though. |
Nose: The nose is quite "OA-typical", a little closer to the 12 than the 18. That means: maritime, slightly dry smoke, burning algae on the beach. Green apples, a squeeze of lime. A quite strong vanilla and cinnamon impact, which at times reminds one more of apple crumble with sweet red apples and with vanilla sauce and cinnamon. With a little standing time, clove is added subliminally, as well as a hint of aniseed. Mouth: For 55% I find a pleasant start. The oak is present quite early and quite spicy. Here again carnation, anise. Citrus flavors, almond biscuits, crab chips and wakame (seaweed popularly used in seaweed salad) with sesame seeds. And above all, the vanilla is very present. At times, the maritime character gets lost a little in the tension between sweetness and spice. Finish: Medium length, slightly ashy, clear vanilla, white and green gummy bears. Striking oak. 87/100 Conclusion: A bottling that I personally don't like much. Unfortunately, for my taste, the combination of virgin American oak wood and this distillate does not go so well together. I find the carnation a bit out of place, the vanilla is too intrusive for me in places. I would like to emphasize positively, however, that the finish seems to have been carried out with caution. The fresh oak didn't iron everything down, especially on the nose I find it very representative of the OA's in the first few minutes after pouring
A solid Caol Ila, strong in taste. However, the 2020 Feis Ile was a lot better.
