It’s just that the young whisky is just too easy to drink, or the barrels were very burnt, or the finish was short, hmm... IMHO there is a lot of Marketing in this batch, but not enough whisky deliciousness ((( 20+ 20 19 20+ 80

Since Fèis Ìle 2025 is just around the corner, I thought you'd give Lagavulin another chance. But Lagavulin still seems to be a shadow of its former self. Why does an 11-year-old at 46% turn out so awful by Lagavulin standards? And what's the point of all these rum casks and rum finishes these days? They rarely work; they should be getting their start at the top level by now. This is how you can drive an established distillery into the ground without any need.

tasted at Whisky in Leiden 2024, 1st of June 2024 The rum casks does it work, but tempers the Lagavulin profile quite a lot. I liked it, but not fully convinced

This is an excellent summer whisky that I really enjoy. My initial skepticism about the rum barrel maturation is completely unfounded.
Нос 90 What initially awaits me in the smell is the typical Lagavulin profile: fresh citrus fruits, salty-maritime aromas and of course the smoky campfire. But then an unexpectedly sweet spiciness comes along, indicating the rum cask influence. Not too much, but balanced just right so as not to distort or overpower the Lagavulin excessively.
Вкус 91 The taste is characterized by a very balanced ratio of Lagavulin whisky profile and complementary tropical rum influence. Everything appears harmonious, smooth and in no way overloaded. The sweetness doesn't lead to diabetes, and the rum doesn't plant palm trees at the gates of the Islay distillery.
Финиш 87 In the aftertaste, the parrot loses a few feathers and reduces the latest Offerman experiment to a gently smoldering fire and an ocean beach feeling. I would have liked a little more sugar on the edge of the glass here.

Нос 83 Very malty, more like a Highland profile then an Islay, metallic, coastal, salty
Вкус 83 Weak, salty, "non-peaty" almost, its like an old blend from the 70s. Very special profile.
Финиш 85 A little bit peaty on the finish, finally..

A bit of a bland Lagavulin which does very little on the palate, but picks up again in the finish.
Нос 85 Sweet and savory on the nose. Only a whiff of smoke. Vanilla and some sugared dried (tropical) fruits like peach and pineapple, citrussy. Also something fermenting, dry grass, hay, lactic, some nutmeg and dusty wood in the background.
Вкус 83 Feels thin in the mouth with little complexity. Sweet vanilla, some honied liquorice, vague dried fruits and a light pepperiness with a hint of charcoal. Very light for a Lagavulin.
Финиш 86 Medium length: vanilla, sugared fruit slices, resin, cough sweets (stophoest), liquorice, some peat and smoke is picking up here, charred wood, chili peppers, drying and warming.

S 6 A short-lived whisky. The texture and flavour profile starts losing its vibrancy within just a week in the bottle, a BBQ whisky rather than a sipping one. The initial dram as I recall was slightly overpowered by the rum on the nose and palate with a solid Lagavulin undertone. Below are notes of the second dram in a week's time. Have a bottle of Lagavulin 16 that lasted 2yrs and it still holds a better shape than this.
Нос 80 Sweet herbs. Coastal smoke. A mix of white sugar and honey. Minerals. Lightly charred oak.  A pinch of ground five spices.
Вкус 80 A lot more peat than the nose. Smouldering pinewood smoke. Much less sweet than the nose suggested. Very dark chocolate.
Финиш 83 Long finish. Earthy peat and ember smoke. All sweetness seems to dry out on the palate, what’s left is just oak and peat smoke.

Pleasant on the nose, sweet, not very smoky, salty, maritime. A hint of rum in the sense of ester notes. In the mouth, initially also nice and sweet, salty smoke. But then quickly disappears with sour wood and a little bitterness. 11 years is simply too young for Lagavulin, at least at drinking strength.

Нос 87 Lemon Cheese Grilled Kelp
Вкус 87 The first sip is quite mediocre, with a classic smoky flavor that is much weaker than the aroma. The middle part is the sweet and sour taste of mango and pineapple, a more obvious tropical fruit flavor, and a slight bitterness of lemon peel;
Финиш 86 The aftertaste is very complex with oak, peat, minerals, pepper, etc., and ends with the bitterness of oak.

A pleasant Lagavulin, but not a top-notch one. The rum is minimally prominent, which is fine in itself, as it preserves the distillery's character. Notes of spice, dried fruit, pleasant smokiness, and sulfur. Taste with salt, caramel, cane sugar, sugar, ripe fruit, and spices. A medium-long finish with notes of fruit, citrus, salt, and spices.

I'm a fan :-) I like Lagavulin and this special edition is great! So... The Lagavulin Offerman 11 Year Old Caribbean Rum Cask Finish is one of those whiskies I approached with equal parts curiosity and skepticism. Because the bottle was hyped and I saw it all over my social media feed. But hey. Let's keep an open mind. I tasted it and yes. I enjoyed everything I tasted; nothing muddies the harmony, no no no- the rum casks help lift the whole to another level. It adds an appealing layer of sweetness and light tropical character, yet it never quite sinks into the core of the spirit. Instead, it hovers at the edges, making the experience interesting but just a little disjointed. I enjoy drinking it, and there are moments where the contrast between smoke and sweetness really clicks. I'm happy that I have an open bottle in my cabinet :-)
Нос 88 On the nose, it immediately reassures you that this is Lagavulin. Peat, but softer than the classic 16-year-old—less of a dense wall of smoke and more of a coastal drift. I get sea air, iodine, a lot of sweetneesssss (from the rum casks?) and a gentle smokiness that leans toward grilled pork rather than a roaring bonfire. Then: caramel, honey, and a slightly glossy sweetness that almost feels like varnish. There’s a flicker of citrus brightness—orange peel, maybe even something like meringue—and just a suggestion of tropical fruit. Not a full-on rum explosion, more like a warm breeze carrying faint notes of molasses and grilled pineapple past the distillery warehouses.
Вкус 86 Surprisingly approachable mouthfeel with well integrated alcohol; ABV is spot on. The texture has a soft, slightly oily weight, and the sweetness arrives first—honey, vanilla, a touch of toffee—yes, right before the peat gradually reasserts itself. What I find interesting is how the rum influence doesn’t try to overwrite the spirit but instead sits on top of it, like a glaze. You get a moment where sweetness, citrus, and a hint of coconut hover together, and then the familiar Lagavulin profile pushes through: smoke, brine, a mineral edge, and a peppery warmth. I'm happy. The rum is a good addition, a nice extra- and not a replacement of the 'regular' stuff that we all like about Lagavulen. After some oxidation I have the meaty, barbecue-like character again; you know, that honey lacquered pork belly that ties the whole thing together, though it never becomes heavy or overly savory.
Финиш 83 The finish is ok. My enthusiasm dips slightly. It turns drier than expected, with the smoke lingering alongside a salty, maritime note that feels very true to the house style. Medium long... And the sweetness fades quicker than I’d expected. Ash towards the end of the taste, a touch of spice, and a slight alcoholic sharpness that reminds you of its relative youth. Not too harsh though.

Despite the exorbitant price and difficult availability, I like drinking this whisky very much, and it is one of the few whiskys with a rum finish that I like. Lagavulin is simply my favorite! Despite the clear rum tones, the absolute dominance of Lagavulinovská's dense and complex taste and aroma with a very specific ashiness, iodine and pungency of white pepper. New and new aromas, tastes and smells can be discovered in every sip of it. A very pleasant and complex drink for an unfortunately excessive price.

I’ve avoided the previous Offerman releases as I feared marketing hype over substance. However, this one got me interested as I am quite partial to a rum/peat combo, having got hooked on a rum cask Springbank many years ago. So…I took the plunge (only as I had points to use for a discount at Malts.com….I wasn’t going to pay £90!). Having had it open for a couple of nights now, I am pleased I bought it. The nose has classic Laga peat, citrus fruits and salty sea air, but is beautifully enhanced by the sugary sweetness from the rum casks. Not overpowering it, just enhancing it. Definitely a summery Islay profile then (rather than the heavier sherry cask malts I prefer in winter). A couple of drops of water brought out even more of the Laga spirit, making it perfectly balanced with the cask influence. Definitely not over-done. The palate is much like the 12yo annual limited edition but with some icing sugar dusted on top. I really appreciate that the classic citrus and peat notes I love haven’t been buried by the cask, but also really enjoy the unique addition of the rum cask (a first for Lagavulin?). The finish is the only slight letdown, with a little too much bitterness and not enough sweet-peat. That’s not enough to put me off, though, as I found my glass emptying and refilling quite fast ;-). Not a marketing gimmick then…rather a new angle on Lagavulin that I really appreciate and enjoy. Just knock £20 off the RRP and I’d be very happy!

not bad in general, but not matching my expectations. This Lagavulin feels somewhat watery to me. I would prefer 8yo or 12yo to this one. It has pleasant fruity flavors, which could nicely develop when matured for 7-9 extra years. But it seems that Diageo had an urgent need to release a rather average peated malt for such a high price.
Нос 85 mild peat, sweet fruit, light honey, overripe banana. After few minutes in the glass the sweetness leaves the place to charcoal, seaweed, brine, machine oil, bread crast.
Вкус 84 rather thin in the mouth with almostly missing rum influence. The spirit is light in texture, Islay character shows mostly in ashy and charred oak character, and light maritime notes. Sweetness appears in the 2nd and 3rd sip.
Финиш 85 long and dry, although some honey notes can be spotted as well. Herbs, tobacco, ash, slighly mineralic

Lagavulin Offerman Ed 11 year old Caribbean Rum Cask Finish, 46%. Pale amber. Aroma is milky, fruited yoghurt, light pineapple and peach esters, no smoke. For me it is too ‘lactic’ and muddled. Body is rounded, watery. Taste is soft and easy, some candy floss flavours come through the watery start. The nice subtle biscuity vanilla vibes that the 16 brings are there if you search but they’ve been drowned out. And it’s hard to say exactly what flavours are doing the drowning – it’s like the spirit has been neutralised into a watery vaguely fruity nothingness. The finish has typical Lagavulin smoke tempered and diminished by the sweetness. There’s a strange marzipan bubblegum vibe to this Lagavulin's finish. The spirit character doesn't come through. Doesn’t really work for me, this one. Always good to diversify and try new things but not a great outcome this time. Still a fine, perfectly drinkable beverage but if I owned a bottle I know I would never get to the bottom of it. 3.2/77

Нос 90 This fellow starts off quite mild, with lots of vanilla, orange zest and tropical fruits. This bottling also shows its origins unmistakably with the typical Lagavulin distillery character. The smoke is very well integrated and makes sniffing a feast. At the end the nose becomes floral, sugary-sweet and slightly spicy.
Вкус 85 Peatier to start with than the nose would suggest. Also quite mineral and spicy. Much sweeter and fruitier on the second sip, with pineapple, tangy lime, lemon zest, lots of black pepper and burnt tobacco.
Финиш 86 Long, dry, spicy and ashy. Some lemon zest and pepper remain until the end.

Smell: Fruity and light, rather light fruits such as pears, apricots and light grapes, citrus fruits carry the whole, then some banana and roasted coconut, spices and the dry smoke are always present. Taste: Pleasantly sweet start, also nice and fruity, the light fruits are there again but seem much more interwoven than in the nose, there are also mandarins, charred pineapple and a splash of lime, slightly salty, then spicy wood and smoke spread in the mouth. Finish: Long, dry, spicy and charcoal. Conclusion: If Lagavulin wanted to create a light summer whisky by their standards, then they succeeded.

Нос 86 The nose is round and gives me a range of fruity aromas. Preserved fruit, less musty and a bit fresher than the 16. I have citrus, a touch of minerality, but I miss the typical Laga sea scent.
Вкус 85 The mouthfeel opens with a strong sweetness. For me, the strongest "Ah, rum barrel" moment. A blend of local orchard and mango/pineapple takes over. The smoke is strongly present, and for me, everything is very balanced. That can be seen as positive, but also a bit too easy-going.

The contribution of the rum is light but not ethereal, knowing how to caress the impressions in perfect integration with the spirit of the distillery. Once again an excellent dram for a series that confirms itself as a certainty, especially when compared to other limited editions that are not as consistent in quality.
Нос 91 The nose begins with a maritime peat, the very classic beach bonfire (a figure quite abused in tastings!) with smoke from burning wood, iodine, pickled olives, oysters and lots of grilled fruit (pineapple, peaches, banana, mango). There is a sweet and pastry component, of vanilla, Catalan cream and sugar paste, and a citrusy and acidic one, of lemon and lime, well integrated. Along the length, the coastal part grows in intensity. Overall, fresh and crisp, a Lagavulin with an effectively Caribbean and joyful vein.
Вкус 90 In the mouth, it begins with a rather delicate spicy compartment (ginger, white pepper), showing a pronounced oiliness, very full-bodied. Initially a little closed, with the flavours slowly opening up on the palate accompanied by a coastal, slightly medicinal smoke: ripe fruit (banana, pear, pineapple, peach), meringue, toasted brown sugar. Yellow citrus fruits return, with lemon and lime, together with brine and a certain dryness at the end. Perfect alcohol strength.
Финиш 90 Quite long and dry finish of grilled fruit, spices, citrus, maritime peat, salt and caramelised sugar.

Unfortunately, smoky Islay bottlings from rum barrels are very rare. That's a shame, because the maritime and often smoky Islay character harmonizes perfectly with the Caribbean influence of the rum barrels. And why not, after all, the Caribbean is also very much influenced by the sea. If you think of winter and fireplaces when you think of this bottling, you are definitely wrong, because Lagavulin has created a real summer whisky that is easy to drink and simply fun. https://www.aboutwhisky.de/tastingnotes/lagavulin-offerman-edition-2024/

I love rum casks. I love Lagavulin. This should be my dream dram, and it mostly lives up to my expectations. The stereotypical citrus, brine, sea salt air, smoldering campfires, it's all here, but with a welcome addition from the rum cask. One of the reasons I love rum casks whisky is my sweet tooth. While this is by no means a dessert dram, it is way more balanced than I expected. The peat interplays beautiful with the rum and while it doesn't have the hogo funk that would drive me wild, it does have some of that cinnamon clove molasses that I was hoping for. My sales pitch: If you like Lagavulin 12, and wonder what it would taste like with subdued peat and a rum cask finish, look no further.

Rum finishes are generally a tricky subject for me. They often remain superficial, merely adding extra sweetness to the distillate without creating any real depth. Accordingly, I approached this edition with caution.
Нос 87 Smoke, maritime notes, and the typical Lagavulin sweetness are clearly in the foreground. The rum finish only appears sporadically: a touch of brown sugar, a hint of molasses, occasionally a trace of banana or exotic fruit. It's not constantly present and can sometimes even be difficult to detect. Instead of being dominant, it adds accents – sometimes more pronounced, sometimes barely perceptible. You have to search for the rum a bit, but at least you can find it.
Вкус 87 Powerful peat smoke meets caramelized sweetness. The long fermentation already gives the distillate a pronounced base sweetness, which is perfectly suited to the rum cask. When the rum notes emerge, they blend harmoniously and don't compete with the smoke. At the same time, the finish remains subtle rather than dominant; it supports the existing flavor profile rather than redefining it.
Финиш 88 The finish is smoky, sweet, and slightly spicy with a warm, malty base. Occasional hints of exotic rum shine through, but remain subtle and fleeting. Conclusion: Not a loud, aggressive rum finish, but rather a more restrained interpretation. Those expecting a pronounced, tropical style will have to taste very carefully – and won't find it in every sip. Nevertheless, the combination works well overall because the smoke and sweetness harmonize and don't clash. For me, it's more of a summery treat than a powerful, fireside whisky – but quite successful within this context.

Nose has some peat smoke, tropical fruits and toasted coconut. Palate is charred pineapple, vanilla, some salinity and slightly peppery finish. Not as sweet tasting as I thought it would be

Нос 86 Strong but not overwhelming smokey peat. Sea salt. Some syrup (perhaps Molasses but I've never tried it). Overall balanced.
Вкус 85 Very smooth. Medium-small body. Brine. Small hint of sweetness. Subtle woody peat on the palate. Overall very balanced without flaws
Финиш 82 Medium-long finish. Mostly helped by the peat. Great warmth.

Beautiful flavor palette of nuts and the taste of the rum finish, a really nice dessert whisky. Also has a light citrus note.

Sea salt, candyfloss grapes, lemon, caramel, light campfire, bit peppery too but with water that gets tamed nicely, the lemon gets stronger and there’s a nice mint note. Medium-short finish.

Enkel näsa med en viss sötma. Bra sötma i smaken med lite rök och tydlig peat. Bra tyngd. Avslutar med bra rök och peat. Avslutar

Much better than i expected. (Honestly, I don’t get any hopes up) Rum cask Influence and spirit characters are well balanced. Especially tropical fruit notes go well together.

Нос 85 Sweet and salty, caramel, vanilla, cream pudding, heather honey, ripe citrus fruits, orange peel, delicate smoke, a gentle breath of sea breeze, strong black tea.
Вкус 84 Mineral, sweet (though less than on the nose), brine, ash peat, citrus, delicate oak bitterness, white pepper, a flash of seaside notes.
Финиш 84 Warming, ash, "heavy" campfire smoke (choking), oak, with a "watered down" fruitiness looming in the background.
