Fruity, little citrusy, nutty, oily smooth, subtle sweet finish
Quick hit review. Whisky calendar - Day 14. This Balvenie serves as a perfect example of how a great malt is being spoiled by low ABV and chill-filtration. Take the nose alone: gorgeous! Sweet cherries and marzipan mingle with toffee, herbal tea and hints of amaretto. A bit light and thin, the palate continues with dried fruits, nougat and rich spices. Then the finish falls off the cliff, leaving behind traces of oranges and dark chocolate. It's not bad, but this whisky could be so much better! RATING: 3.9/5.0 stars ≙ 86 pts → FIRST-CLASS [-]
https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2020/05/14/on-location-balvenie/ N: This is nice, very nice. Sweet shop-sweet with a deep maltiness and a buckwheat=doughy [Eddu] beer note. T: Sherry-like with sulphury notes for my sulphur-sensitive palate. F: At the minimum bottling strength, it really struggles to keep going. C: Nicely soft in keeping with the whole Balvenie range, but this one is noticeably underpowered.
Excellent whisky from Balvenie, although with an asterisk. Because I can't help but wonder how this tastes at a higher percentage. This matures for over 21 years, and then you undo a lot of that work by watering it down to the lowest possible level. Is 46 percent really too much to ask for?
This whisky is very well-balanced and easy to drink—I really like it.

With its 40% unfortunately too weak on the chest - the aromas are watered down. Doesn't offer more than a similar whisky around 40-50 euros. So in view of the price, completely excessive and nothing I would buy.

- a tasty and good single malt, BUT for the 21 years one does not come! - Very subtle smell, good taste, no finish available - for a 21 year old Balvenie and the high price unfortunately very much disappointing and way too expensive
An interesting, very good malt, but still missing something! You do not notice his age! Unfortunately a very high price!

I think the beguiling nose and the proud age seduce many whisky friends to rate this bottle very highly. But if you carefully take apart the main part and the finish, it becomes clear that this dram has its weaknesses precisely there. Because it only delivers the texture relatively thin and is no more convincing than any other good 21er. Plus no rough edges. Only the violently peppery start. But that's exactly what I found annoying or inappropriate, because with only 40% you shouldn't expect that. This is also disappointing for those who bought it for that very reason. The Balvenie 21 was also available as a "duty free" version with 47.6%. I would be very interested in that. For this comparison I will park 20cl. Thank you very much to "little dram" for the great rehearsal.

The more I go back to Balvenie the more I appreciate their balance. This is no exception. Berries, vanilla, honey, oak and malt all beautifully woven together.

I don't think this on deserves a high price. After 21 years of maturation, you expect something better from Balvenie. Sad to bring this on 40%ABV. Not a bad whisky though, simply not worth the money.

Disappointing for my favorite distillery. Not enough fruit and far too spicy to earn over 86p. If you add a few euros, you'll get 1509 batches that are of a completely different standard!
The influence of port wine is very limited; there are signs of maturity in the whisky, yes, but it offers a rather ordinary and muted experience. It's not an interesting bottling, neither in terms of performance nor price. Price-performance ratio: Low, Very Low Would I buy it again?: Absolutely not!

An elegant esterity and light spice opening. Nothing particularly extraordinary, but full-bodied apples, a hint of banana and perhaps some ripe cherry, along with subtle cardamom, cinnamon, and a nice toasty—a “typical Speyside” approach. A lovely custard base. Perhaps fennel seeds. Vanilla stick. Full-bodied quince and pear. Rose jam with rose water and strawberries. Nice oak spice. A touch of confit orange and a slightly musty mushroomy quality, like a shiitake broth. It's not overly dramtic; you really have to look for the notes. Neat but quite ordinary. |

Low body. Lemon balm, lemongrass. Slight acidity. Raspberries, maybe strawberries again. Fresh lemon and orange peel. Sweetness slightly above average, if not low. A hint of coconut and toasty. Cinnamon and fennel seeds again. Vanilla custard stick. Like a red apple and mint herbal tea. A little black peppercorn. Maybe young mango. A hint of rose water again. A bit of grapeiness. Signs of ripeness. A regular but flawless palate, beyond the nose. |

It's very flat. A slight esterity, like a light green grape and young mango. Quite dry. Very mild tannins. Fennel seeds persist. Maybe a very faint star anise. Low intensity. A fairly short finish. Not much to say. Disappointment here, unfortunately. |
Unfortunately, the 40% is not good for this whisky. Set and fruity on the nose, but clearly too weak on the chest. The same perception then also in the taste. Dark fruits with a tart sweetness on the finish. But here, too, I would like more power. This Balvenie would certainly have potential at 46 or 48 percent by volume, but with the 40 percent bottled it is unfortunately a disappointment for me.

Balvenie's unique character is well alive, tastes richer than alcohol intensity, tastes of subtle raisins, prunes, and drinking is high, so it is good to drink a lot without thinking
Pleasurable, just not transcendant.

If you’re looking for titanic punchiness, you’re looking in the wrong place. Bavenie’s 21 year old Portwood is a lesson in sophistication and nuance. I’m still slightly in awe as to how a whisky with a baseline 40% ABV can deliver such a viscous and fulsome mouthfeel. The fact that this whisky then manages to also offer up a near perfect balance between spirit and wood is a testament to its quality. This is equally at home being sipped and savoured as it is being pawed over, studied and thought about. There is however some price variance for this, so do be prepared to hunt around a bit rather than just jumping at the first bottle you see. https://www.thedramble.com/tastings/balvenie/balvenie-21-year-old-portwood/

N: Honey, Apple, Orange, Grapes, Berry, Nuts, Bread, Mint, Cloves, Vanilla, Nutmeg, Cinnamon A sweet first impression of honey and apple. The citrus of orange. Grape and berry notes emerging behind the apple. The influence of a port cask can be felt. The soft texture of vanilla and cream. The savory richness of nuts and the soft inner part of white bread. Mint. Baking spices. Thanks to the spicy notes of cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon, it feels hotter and more peppery than expected for its 43% ABV. |

N, glue, green melon, strawberry, tart raspberries, some heating oil, after a little time in the glass, leather aromas set in. There is some coffee. M Soft on the tongue, light middle part, powerful finish, which quickly loses its intensity, but lingers with ease. Some mocha approaching, a few berries. All in all, a reasonably sophisticated malt that you have to look at more closely. ABV is a disaster though. Pretty thin, colleague. That makes it hard to grasp the flavors. This makes the whisky at best an everyday dram. Pretty contradicting for the price.
Thunders on all sides. Soft, subtle nose, hard to describe; some wood, a little thin scent. Nice taste, of course - and Balvenie, and 21 years, and a portwood finish; what's not to like? Late follows the smell of water mint and very late finally comes the port and wry / dry tannin. Very good but I do not taste 175 euros. Bottle that stuff at 46% or higher and you have a classic, I think so.
Dirty, woody, too much sulfur for me.
A tasting buds treat, especially for not-too-experienced scotch lovers. Matured in ex-bourbon casks. Finished in ex-port casks. Chill-filtered. Coloured. Thick slowly forming fast primary legs. Mid-size slow secondary legs. Rare droplets. Even though it doesn’t take too much water, playing back and forth with it drifts the tastes and the texture. The downside is the low ABV, alongside the (not low) price tag, chill-filtration, and caramel colouring.
Just one fact that says it all - this one lost to Glen Moray Port Cask Finish in a blind tasting. And doesn't taste like a 21YO at all.

One of the most beautiful whiskies in my collection. When I finished the bottle (which I got as a gift from my nephew) I immediately bought a new one. Nice autumn dram, needs higher ABV for the price
Thin and watery. Might as well be drinking water from a port soaked cask. Nose is not too bad if generic, but the mouthfeel is simply nonexistent and the taste leaves only grainy astringency shortly after a sip. I'm not a fan of Balvenie's slightly grain forward characteristic (also prevalent in their 15-yo bourbon single cask and young underproofed malts) and here it prevails again. Maybe my bottle was open a little too long, but why bother bottling anything at 40%? 70-75ish malt, under 60 if price is a consideration.
this is all over the place to me, very light in color for Balvenie in general, esp for a 21yr portwood finish. Nose is excellent, a lot of sweetness and cereal. The taste is immediately warm, bit of cherry and vanilla, more raisin as I have more sips. Finish has more of the balv spice but still very muted. For the price and age it doesn't feel like a Balv or a 21, I think I like the Glendro PW much more for 1/4 the price. Unlikely to buy again
