After there was a Teeling Wonders of Wood Single Malt 14yo Bourbon + Virgin Amburana Brazilian Hardwood and a Teeling Wonders of Wood Single Malt 15yo Bourbon Barrels + Virgin Cherry Wood in 2020, followed by a Teeling Wonders of Wood Single Pot Still Brandy PX Chestnut Cask in 2021, the First Edition Teeling Wonders of Wood is finally coming... - after all, the WoW emblem on the label is now really big and unmissable. Yes, you can absolutely see it. Shortly after opening, it was still very reserved on the nose, but in the meantime it has really gained in format and is a very welcome dram in the glass. And before any rumors about old Cooley stock make the rounds: The single pot still whiskeys from the Wonders of Wood series all come from the Teeling Distillery in Dublin. Quote Teeling Distillery: "Introducing the Wonders of Wood, a series of Dublin Distilled Single Pot Still whiskeys."

Fascinating This is a Teeling Single Pot Still (so own distillation, if you know what I mean) that matured on Virgin Chinkapin American Oak. That's a kind of yellow oak. I expect a lot of spiciness. Part of the proceeds will also go to an organization that is involved in the reforestation of Ireland. But I digress. This is the first release in the so-called Wonders of Wood series. Here we go! The nose offers a lot of fruit in the form of blood oranges, mango and blackcurrants, while caramel and toffee increase the sweetness. But the spiciness is not to be discounted. Pot Still means that unmalted barley was added to the mash bill, which ensures a spicy nose where vanilla, wood chips and licorice also speak. After some breathing, this whiskey even becomes surprisingly waxy and some chocolate, almond paste and freshly polished parquet appears. That works really well. Interesting nose! Waxy on the tongue, too! Immediately sweet on crème brûlée and chocolate, but then quickly gets a sour note like from mandarins and grapefruit before suddenly drying your mouth completely. The spices continue to excite, the sweetness decreases and is replaced by an interesting bitterness that I can only describe as from a grape seed or sweet chestnut. Good! The finish is medium-long and quite dry on dark chocolate filled with orange paste. Terrific. Without a doubt fascinating whiskey. Around 80 EUR. Thx, Benny!

Irish Pure pot still whiskey matured in barrels made of yellow oak.

Despite being a single pot still, do not confuse this with a Redbreast or the Spot whiskies, any of the single pot still whiskies from Midleton. This is a uniquely Teeling single pot still, takes some getting used to because I have to recalibrate what single pot still can be. The spicy oak character from the virgin Chinkapin oak is very prominent throughout the experience. Nose 5.0, palate 5.5, finish 5.3. I like it okay enough, but not enough to try the other Wonders of Wood expressions.

This Teeling is much, much better then I expected! A lot of orange in the nose and the a mouth full of taste! Really like it, value for money!

NOSE Caramel frosting, herbal spice, citrus peels, nuts, light vanilla, dried fruit, and oak. A nice dark aroma that starts spicy and herbal, but turns softer and sweeter as it opens. PALATE Dried fruit, oak, copper, herbal spice, toffee, roasted nuts, touch grassy, and vanilla. Oak comes in heavier making it a bit deeper and a touch tannic. FINISH Medium -> Herbal spice, toffee, oak and some dried fruit.

: It is certainly not a newly distilled whiskey from the Teeling distillery (probably Cooley stock). Very interesting experiment that worked excellently in cooperation with the pot still process. I find exciting moments especially in the smell. A good series start - nothing off the shelf - "the show must go on". The alcohol strength is also cleanly integrated (please do not add water).

I like it! I have a weakness for Teeling anyway and find it exciting to see what great products come out of the still young distillery with huge potential. In my opinion, the Wonders of Wood - Virgin Chinquapin Oak is very interesting and delicious in smell and taste, but weak in the finish. The overall package is still right for me and makes this single pot still a candidate for purchase for me.
