В аромате преобладают мёд (в том числе вересковый), ваниль, свежие садовые фрукты — зелёное яблоко, груша, цитрусы, — а также солод, лёгкая пряность (белый перец, имбирь) и деликатный, влажный дым; хересное влияние присутствует лишь намёком, у части авторов — тёмный шоколад, вишня в молочном шоколаде, тоффи и вереск. Во вкусе напиток маслянистый, но многим кажется тонким и водянистым: сладость, фрукты, орехи, цитрус, немного дуба, пепла и пряностей; послевкусие средней длины, сладковато-солёное, суховатое, с перцем, орехами и слабым дымом, у некоторых с горчинкой и «жжёными» тонами. Оценки очень согласованы и плотно сгруппированы в районе 79–85, разброс минимальный. Самый опытный ревьюер отметил фруктовость и питкость (86), другие опытные подтверждают лёгкость и приятность, но фиксируют простоту и нехватку насыщенности; заметно выбивается лишь один резко негативный отзыв (79) без внятной аргументации. Опытные и остальные сходятся в главном: приятный, беззаботный вечерний образец без глубины, чей основной недостаток — низкая крепость, «разбавляющая» вкус; отдельные авторы удивлены неожиданно ощутимым дымом и почти полным отсутствием хереса, а часть считает предыдущий 12-летний релиз более удачным.

For comparison I started with a "regular" 12YO, a recent Viking Honour bottling. This is in my opinion quite a bit better. It's not a sophisticated dram to ponder too much upon, but a very nice, enjoyable and care free evening sipper. Thanks to ronnholt for this sample.

Нос	82	A lot in common with the 12, light, fresh and fruity. Actually a bit more fruity. And sweeter. More sweet sherry notes. Green apple peel, orangy citrus, some pineapple juice. Not what I would call peat, but a soft touch of smoke. Just like the 12, it's all good but I kind of wish it was more of it.
Вкус	85	Quite a bit more potent than the 12YO. More sherry makes for a much more substancial arrival and bigger body. More spice to kick of the party, I get a nice hint of ginger. May be the extra 2,3% ABV that adds to the feeling of more substance. So what would it have been like on 46%? Lightly citric with a handfull of nutty flavours from midway.

I miss a higher ABV, so pleasant but weak flavors. 83/84.

Нос	83	Malt, citruses, vanilla, pear compote, pepper and ginger. Touch of peat.
Вкус	84	Thin, slightly watery. Apple compote with lot of cloves. Orange peel, sherry and salted minerals.
Финиш	83	Medium length, salty, bittersweet.

Golden color. The whisky is quite oily in the glass.

Нос	84	Sweet and pleasant. Lots of honey and vanilla. A bit of spice. White pepper. Toffee. Subtle traces of red apples underneath. Then some red fruit appears. Starting to feel a slight influence of Sherry casks. A bit of cherry. Cherries in milk chocolate, although it is not the most obvious aroma. Heathers. Traces of fresher orchard fruit. floral.
Вкус	81	Honey. Malt. Wax. Heathers. Smoke trails. Fine ash. A pinch of spices. White pepper. Oak barrel. Dark chocolate. Then again, like a little more sweetness. Toffee in the background. It seems a bit sweeter on the second sip.
Финиш	80	Spicy at the beginning but not too strong. Spices. Black pepper. Cocoa. Oak barrel. Dark chocolate. Ash. Delicate smoke. Some earthiness. Something burnt. Burnt wood. A "dry" feeling. Medium length finish. Maybe medium-long, but it's not very pleasant. Although quite interesting. A better start after the second sip. More chocolate. Black coffee, but slightly sweetened. Plus for curiosity.

The Pale Wolf 14 Year Old is a sweet and complex single malt whisky. It presents a delicate balance of strikingly contrasting flavors. With a brilliant, light gold color, it has been matured in a combination of American oak sherry butts and bourbon barrels, and is bottled at 42.3% ABV.

- for me personally a somewhat disappointing half board for €60 - I was a bit surprised by the amount of smoke, it was for HP surprisingly smoky - I didn't feel much of sherry, almost exclusively Bourbon flavors present - was ok but he didn't really convince me

Looking at the capacity of the bottle, I wonder why it is not standard (0.7 L) in only 1 liter. I conclude that the weaker the whisky, the more it is sold in higher capacity. It may not be bad, but I expected a different quality, a different shelf. Maybe if I did the test blindly, not knowing the vintage rest in the barrel, the note and impressions would be higher. She's missing something. Maybe a longer maturation period, maybe the barrels were not as they should be. I do not know. In my opinion, 12 YO was the better release.

A solid bottling with a pleasingly pleasant and harmonious nose that clearly delivers the high point. Unfortunately, the palate and finish can no longer quite keep up. All in all an uncomplicated dram, which is also a good fit for a social evening between a few beers.

Нос	86	I'm sitting on the terrace at 25°C. The whisky should have reached this temperature by now. He seems to be able to tolerate the heat well. An amazingly lush honey and floral scent swells directly from the glass - very pleasant - interwoven with fine citrus notes. In addition vanilla, juicy bundt cake, saffron, malt, heather.

Another bottling from Highland Park from Travel Retail. The whisky matured for 14 years in sherry seasoned barrels made of American oak and ex-bourbon casks. The age is good, the maturation is normal, it is probably not colored, with the strange strength of 42.3% vol. but certainly chill filtered. Why aren't such bottlings, which are not uninteresting in themselves, made with 46% vol. filled into the bottle? Of course there are statements on the box about the relationship between the Vikings and the wolf. Ok, wolves are wild, Vikings are wild – whiskys with 42.3% ABV. are tame. And by the way: Were there wolves in Orkney? Probably not, but they lived in the myths of the settlers who came from Northern Europe to settle in the archipelago. So we leave Highland Park with the story about the wolf, which looks really good on the packaging. On the Scotland ferry you can get a liter in a combo pack for just under €45. You can drink it without worrying, but that's all. It's a whisky that wasn't fully produced. Everything is very subtle...nothing half-hearted and nothing whole.
