Насыщенный современный херес из перекупажированных бочек: какао, тёмные сухофрукты, кожа, орехи. Опытные хвалят богатство и баланс аромата; спорят лишь о том, оправдана ли сложная бочковая история и есть ли сера.

В аромате господствует богатый хересный профиль: грецкий орех, кожа, финики, изюм, тёмный шоколад, табак, кофе и старое дерево, а у более фруктовых образцов — красная слива, ежевика, инжир, чернослив и фруктовый кекс с ноткой имбиря. Вкус плотный и маслянистый, ведомый хересом: какао, мокко, молочный и горький шоколад, лакрица, сухофрукты, ромовая вишня, пряный дуб и живые винно-уксусные кислоты. Послевкусие длинное и тёплое, у части дегустаторов сладко-фруктовое, у других — суховатое с горчинкой танинов и дуба, но без неприятного оттенка; вода раскрывает землистые и минеральные тона и добавляет сладости, местами уплощая вкус.
Опытные ревьюеры оценивают виски высоко (90–93), отмечая исключительный, сложный и ореховый аромат, кремовую текстуру и выдающийся баланс, проявляющийся особенно в послевкусии. Расхождение проходит не по качеству, а по трактовке: один авторитетный автор подробно критикует саму концепцию — переливание из бурбонных бочек в винные, PX и олоросо с последующим купажированием даёт, по его мнению, вкус, полностью определяемый хересом и не сложнее, чем от одной хорошей бочки, то есть усилия скорее маркетинговые. Часть менее опытных упоминает лёгкую серу и тонковатое тело, тогда как опытные серы не находят; отдельные низкие оценки (85, 88) говорят о медицинско-больничных и сухих древесных нотах. В целом оценки согласованы и тесно сгруппированы около 90.

It is almost 5 years since I tasted this Laddie so tasting again to compare with another 25 year OB 25089. Nose Quite fresh the sherry is here, rich red plumb, juicy blackberry, fresh figs and something I can only describe as beefy? Palate Very rich, milk chocolate, perhaps some plain chocolate also, faint ginger spice and some damson jam, fruit cake notes and some dark treacle toffee. Finish The balance is more evident on the finish but even then a fruity blast of dark berries and spice blasts through. Nice finish.

[March, 2019] What a strange release: A refill bourbon matured Bruichladdich is re-casked into wine casks for five years and PX sherry casks for another four years and finally married with another Bruichladdich matured in refill sherry casks for 17 years and re-casked into oloroso butts for 7 years. Draw a sketch if you cannot comprehend this and: Welcome to the modern world of designed whiskies! And after all the result is a fine modern sherry-matured whisky - not less, not more. I guess they could achieve this with much less effort through the simple use of good quality sherry casks instead. But I doubt Bruichladdich owns such fine sherry casks of the 90ies vintages in its warehouses (because the distillery owned no budget to buy excellent casks during these years) and so the re-racking is the only way to create such a 25-years old sherry release. Finally, I do not care as long as it is quaffable and this one definitely is... PS: By the way, I do not find any trace of sulphur in this dram (just because some members mention sulphur in their reviews)...
| Нос | 91 | The colour is russetmuscat and the nose offers a rich modern sherry profile with the usual aromas one can expect. Pretty nice but I am not sure if I can detect any difference to a flawless sherry maturation in just one (good) cask. Actually, I am sure now and there is none. So why all the efforts of re-racking and marrying? Maybe it was an experiment? Or they simply wanted to create a funny marketing story? I guess that (most probably) the first maturations simply were not good enough and so they had to polish them up using newer casks... And in the end this is an excellent and flawless nose that is a pleasure to sniff, well done Jim! |
| Вкус | 90 | The taste is completely sherry driven with cocoa and mocha flavours. After some chewing tasty chocolatey notes develop (both milk and dark) and some bitter flavours (tea, woods) pop up. To be honest, I expected the taste to be much more complex given all the different casks involved but it is just the sherry that has the say, finally. |
| Финиш | 89 | The initial mouthfeel is a little hot and coating with a minor drying feeling (cold metals). The finish is of medium length and dries out on bitter notes towards the end (tannins) but it never gets unpleasant. Water releases earthy and mineral aromas and turns the taste much sweeter but it flattens somewhat, too. I like the neat dram best. |
A great malt.
Very pleasant, rich whisky, especially the nose and the balance is outstanding. On my worst day I would say that it's a bit much, but the better days it's perfect.

Expressive dark sherry notes prevails, smoked bacon and buttery, Nutty PX with leathery Oloroso are felt throughout with pleasant dark fruit sweetness and dry medium finish, mellow manner. Very sherried "Highland" in this one. Perhaps wee thin on body, and it doesn't help that I try this right after having an orgasm with the powerful monster Penderyn. Heard that this one will developed and benefit after breathing time. Shall re-visit again in future. — at Whisky Live Singapore.

One of the best "nose whiskys" I've ever had. He also convinces in the mouth, but I already had some better ones here. Overall, a top whisky!
