Quick hit review. Some might argue that Octomore is a one-trick pony, but the range of different cask types offers a lot of variety. Medicinal, mossy and chalky, then mineral, peppery and zesty, the nose unfolds with menthol, green apples and a cloud of peat smoke. The bold arrival releases hot spices, raw peatiness and honey before grapefruit, bitter herbs and brine kick in. French oak, lime juice and tobacco migrate into the leafy finish. it baffles me every time, absolutely lovely

At the beginning, the search for the smoke is almost in vain, it takes time to comfortably breathe into the nose. Smoke is also what remains in the finish, but there is not really much behind it anymore, the smoke conceals that it basically has little substance, hardly any foundation.

Nice whisky, especially the nose is very pleasant, with a lot of bacon and a nice mixture of smoke and red fruits. The same combination noticable in taste, just less obvious. Overall very nice and interesting.

Strong, overwhelming, especially on the nose. But now I have a bit of similar feeling like Kelpie, the less sometimes is more. But it was almost 86 points. :)

It’s incredible to think this bottle cost me just £75 back in the day though the hype and subsequent price surge [£250+] peaked and cooled in the intervening years. Just to be clear, this youthful spirit has been aged in Ex-eau-de-vie Limousin oak casks, and not – as I’ve wrongly mentioned in the past – Limonsin ex-cognac casks. N: If I were to start a distillery, I might head towards this uber-oily farmy vegetal style with layered oaky phenolic lemon juice and a drop or two of apple cider > onion vinegar. Being spirit-faithful and aged to retain youthfulness and a full-bodied weighty fattiness, we find ourselves in a mature genever/mezcal-tequila territory. T: With an equally focused savoury and sweet coupling, we’ve a very salty farmy phenolic and bitter /sour lemon/lime shandy, the previous [eau de vie] cask contents seemingly promoting the [allium-y] cowpats with further leanings towards tequila > mezcal. Perhaps that’s why I love this so whilst others not so much. Perhaps a curveball for a blind tequila line-up? F: With a further eau de vie injection, we finish with a now relaxed new make-y finish, [white] grape/wine-like, the oily viscosity continuing to envelop over the palate. C: To love this one is to appreciate raw spirit regardless of grain/cane/vine [or cask] origin, not an unreasonable challenge for someone with dedication to the pursuit of flavour & taste, to quality over quantity. This will, however, remain a weird/left-field whisky for those who tend to stick to particular single malt [Scotch] styles.

Ginger, baked apple and vanilla. Earthy smoke on top, but very subtle. Very ripe white plum, which flows on the fingers. Icing sugar. Sugar candy, you can really feel the influence of the eau-de-vie. Kumquat, lime, lychee. Very balanced whole. Almond paste, flavored with pistachio. Yellow wine from Jura. Some cereal reflections, wheat under the sun, grilled corn. White currant. With the addition of water, it stabilizes. Suave, pastry and lemony palate, followed by spices. Slightly sour apples, white pepper, tarragon, smoked wood. Light but very long finish, mirabelle plum and pomegranate, an ounce of iodine and salt, a beach of fine sand, light charcoal, brown sugar, butternut. Pear crumble. Once again, it is absolutely remarkable. Serge says; Octomore 5 yo 'Edition: 06.2' (58.2%, OB, travel retail, 2014)  167ppm again, this time matured in ex-Cognac Limousin oak casks. Metanoical spirit, if you will. Colour: gold. Nose: more sour fruits in this one, that is to say apples, pears and such. Also greengages, perhaps. I find a little honey as well, but other than that, it’s got more iodine than its bro, less straight medicinal notes, and more raw barley, hay, farmyard, cereals and all that. With water: a working kiln, hessian, smoked clothes (after a night around a campfire), sultanas, figs. Mouth (neat): huge arrival, very smoky, salty, with touches of grapefruits and tangerines, then raisins. Probably from the cognac. I think the combination works. There’s also more spicy French oak than in the Sauternes, with a feeling of curried ginger. With water: same feelings, plus this one: eating a whole ashtray. Finish: long, rather lemony, peaty, barleyish. Comments: rather more to my liking than the already-lovely Sauternes, but I’m sure I’d have enjoyed it even more without the sultanas. SGP:558 - 87 points.

Nose It starts with a combination of peat smoke and sea air with hints of iodine through juniper, pineapple, and anise Cinnamon followed. Over fruity notes of blackberries, Cherries, blueberries and chocolate. Taste A strong one and show smoky with phenolic profile. Reminds me of one Premium cognac. Departure maritime notes with honey and minerals.

What´s the deal with the low rating in comparison to other Octomore bottlings? I really don´t see much different. If any I liked this one more than previous bottlings like the 05.1 or 02.1. The limousin casks added some quite nice, sweet flavors to the malt. Very enjoyable, even undiluted. Doesn´t taste that youngish compared to other Octomores.

Reminds me a lot of the young bunnahabhain moine of orphan. Smoked salty meat. Heather. Apples. Grassy. A really young islay bucker.

I don't know if it's the Eau de Vie Cask, but this one is a little more chemical than the 6.1. I like that one better, this one has more oily flavors and is a little thicker perhaps, but also contains some of notes. Tasted the 6.1 and the 6.2 side by side.

The taste is totally superimposed on the sugar sweetness. 80 points (nose: 86 / taste: 78 / finish: 75) Conclusion: Let's put it this way: That was nothing! So Octomore is not fun. If we did not know that things could be different, they would certainly have been the last two to find their way into our glass!

2017-05-29: Unusual and high-quality whisky, whisky experiment! Ideal for long tasting in small quantities.

I guess this one is an acquired taste. It took a lot of time in the glass, and some water, for me to appreciate it. Even then, the aftertaste is really weird. Like I just brushed my teeth. Or used mouthwash. Not just the hint of mint, but also the mouthfeel. I never encountered this before.

huge whisky, needs some water to bring all the flavors. Good quality intensely peated young islay malt. Great experience! (a sample)

Everything in here what you are waiting for associating an Octomore. Nice Smoke and ashes, a lot of fruits (red fruits due to the Limousin Oak). Tar and tobacco. I like this one very much except of some light bitter notes at the finish line.Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10

mouth and nose disagree. Translated his great youth. The worst of the Octomore tasted so far.

Brief notes

Cognac cask. Very powerful (what else) nose. A lot of seaweed. Sweet winy taste and heavy heavy peated finish. A bomb.

Octomore is not my thing, but this one is just plain nasty. Maybe the provided samplebottle wasn't clean. Tasted 06/12/2015, in a line-up with the 06.1, 06.2 and 06.3.

Also here peat smoke very well integrated into a great sweetness and oiliness. In terms of complexity slightly weaker than the Octomore 6.1.

For the real peat lover. Actually just a bit too expensive to just drink. Delicious aftertaste, lingers long.

Again a masterpiece. Heavy peat and sea, mixed with fruits and honey beyond the fire.

I must say, this s very nice. I remember Octomore as was to unbalanced, but this was a pleasant surprise. Indeed, this is the peat monster everyone’s talking about.

Perfect whisky after a day on the moor cutting peats. Needs diluting to take the edge off. Sweet taste and definitely not unpleasant as always with Octomore.
