Aroma: Delicate, gentle and fruity, orchard fruits, green apples and pears, vanilla, a bit of caramel, grain notes, vegetal notes, hay, woody-nutty accents Taste: Initially sweet and fruity, green fruits and vanilla, then shifting into woody-nutty notes, oak bitterness, spicy and peppery, a medium-long and dry finish Overall Impression: A good whisky at a reasonable price, offering a soft introduction to the Tomatin portfolio
I even liked the way I laid out the scent here, because it came to me quite easily, the associations came easily. But the scent itself is quite unique. When studying whisky at universities, the fundamental theory is based on a very important understanding of what matured whisky is. Matured whisky is a grain distillate in which the immature characteristics are removed during the aging process in barrels, imparting the characteristics of maturity. In this case, the immaturity characteristics have not been removed, which means it cannot be considered whisky! 20 17 18 17
Tried in Winterthur on April 26th. Part of the series "I'm giving the distillery a second chance". Unfortunately, it didn't work out so well.
Intriguing overall quality (especially at this price), held back by clearly noticeable sulphur notes. The sulphur kind of wafts in and out, at times it merely comes off as damp wood, but it can also approach the smell of brussel sprouts, which obviously isn't for everyone. On the plus side, really nice finish for an entry-level 12-year old: gradually increasing spiciness that crescendos into lingering cinnamon and pepper. I recommend keeping the nosing to the minimum (given the sulphur). Instead, enjoy the surprisingly oily in-the-mouth-experience, which starts off with sweet and sour apples, moves across barley / grain / cereal notes and ends up in beautiful spicy oakiness (not bitter at all, just tingly in the best possible way). Conclusion: flawed, but charming.

One of those bottles where the bottle design promises more than you get (although the price is pretty fair nowadays). Alright, the did not go with 40% abv., but more than a starter it is not. Won't blame Tomatin however, at least it's 12 years old!
Tomatin 12. At Steps Bar, Glasgow, April 2019, Eminem on full blast. Aroma is airy, faint oak, vanilla and dried fruits. Taste is very smooth rounded oak and dried fruit, incredibly drinkable, a little vanilla biscuit and subtle fruits. I maybe like this just a touch more than the 18 - less spicy, more drinkable but still complex. Really easy to drink and complex. Enjoyed it a lot. The oaky astringency does build and gets slightly distracting, but still good. (3.55/85)
Comes at a typical Price for entry-Level 12 year old Single Malts. It still has a little too many rough Edges at its Age but it mellows when allowed to breath.

Fair tasting: Relatively flat, subtle sherry flavors, more neutral and unspectacular. I do not have to have this tomato in my jar a second time ...
Ignoring the strange air-like nose to being with, after a fair amount of resting (much more than you’d normally expect for a 12 year old), this dram really finds its feet. It’s highly drinkable and with a good character of sweet-fruit and bitter wood. https://www.thedramble.com/tastings/tomatin/tomatin-12-year-old/

Light, well made, and uncomplicated.
Clean thing, not to hide next to other bourbon / sherry standards of this age group and is quite cheap at 30 €. So, if you're not really into Balvenie Double Wood, or Aberlour, or if you do not want to spend a fifties on Macallan Amber, why not check out here.
Passing and despite the age, very sharp whisky, floral themes that are present quickly bother and do not force to pour more dram.

Tomatin 12-Year-Old Bourbon & Sherry Casks is a well-crafted Highland single malt that beautifully balances the influences of its dual maturation in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Its smooth and approachable character makes it a standout choice for both new and experienced whisky drinkers. Here’s my take on it:

The aroma opens with fresh, crisp fruit notes, particularly green apple and juicy pear, which immediately set a bright and inviting tone. Tropical fruit hints, like mango, add a touch of sweetness. As it develops, there’s a creamy richness with notes of caramel and soft milk chocolate, accompanied by a light nuttiness, like almonds. Underneath it all, you’ll find delicate floral and herbal nuances, reminiscent of heather and a hint of cedarwood, adding a subtle earthiness. |

On the palate, it’s beautifully balanced. Sweet vanilla and creamy oak from the bourbon casks come through first, joined by a refreshing minty edge. These are followed by a gentle warmth of spices, particularly ginger, which adds depth without overpowering. The fruitiness carries over from the nose, with dried orange peel and a touch of exotic guava adding complexity. The interplay of the bourbon and sherry casks creates a layered profile, with sweetness and spice complementing one another perfectly. |

The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering sweetness that reminds me of currant buns or fresh pastries. There’s a subtle touch of raspberry-like fruitiness that adds a bright, tangy note toward the end. Malted barley flavors provide a warm, comforting base, tying everything together beautifully. The finish is smooth, with just the right balance of sweetness and light oak dryness. |
N: Paper, cinnamon stick, vanilla candle, lemon zest, firewood P: Lemon juice, ethanol, caramel, butterscotch, popsicle stick F: Grapefruit pith It's drinkable and considering the price, not terrible
good beginner, has in addition to the sweetness and the slight bitterness that is a good mood for more intense Fassaromen. 82/100
On the nose, the almond, the core, is slightly spicy and already very vanilla On the palate, it is creamy, unctuous, sweet, on vanilla, orange fruits, malty back In the end, it's quite short, always on malt, creamy vanilla, and fruits. A simple dram, but also without too much reproach, for an evening without making head, which will delight the vanilla fans.
This new style Tomatin is more complex and rewarding than the (competent) earlier versions. With plenty of time in the glass, and a bit of water this Tomatin is a very capable 12 years old.

A nice highland malt, but lacks that special something for me, a bit of sparkle is missing, could use more freshness. The profile is simple yet well-made. Part of me can’t help but think ‘blend filler’, even though it’s really nice - but there are similarly priced competitors with more character. But, my review is based on a 5cl sample, so two largeish drams, therefore take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Not a bad malt and perhaps quite good for carousing as it's really very smooth and uncomplicated. However, I find it surprisingly one-dimensional, fire-heavy and just plain boring. In addition, the slightly furry and slowing finish shows that the barrels were more of the used variety.
Many off notes, natural gas, pure taste
It's not very good when the bottle is just opened. Sour bread, malt, yeast, dough. It gets better after the bottle is awake for a while, and some fruits appear.

Pleasant whisky. For "all days" he is, like most tomatin, a bit too sharp in taste and finish.
Pleasant drops to just slurp away, not overwhelmed, no disturbing notes. For about 30 € actually worth his money.
This is a beautiful whisky. Rich Tomatin signature; nicely matured and good bottling strength. The value-for-money is like Aberlour: super!

6 Feb 2023: Tasted again in the distillery. Updated to 83 according to my new scoring system. This time my notes emphasize creamy toffee, oily nuts, cooked malt, and a touch of dark fruits. 81-85 - Another dram welcomed S 6 Nose is similar to Tamdhu 12 but a bit more citrusy. Overall a very mellow dram. According to the brand ambassador, this is 1/3 refill hogshead, 1/3 1st fill bourbon, and 1/3 1st frill oloroso. N 24 - White rabbit creamy milk candy - Clementine citrusy - Mild spice behind - A drop of water will bring up the buttery note P 26 - honey-coated fruit - Fresh mint feeling at the back of your tongue - Some raisins - A bit watery by the end F 24 - Short finish - Barley - Hint of tobacco - Very mild wood spice
- a good solid single malt at a fair price - not the best 12 year old standard but for the 30€ you get you can have a really tasty good strong whisky - it always works and also has more character than, for example, a Cardhu 12, Glenkinchie 12 or Glenfiddich 12, Glenlivet 12 - good price for 30€, you should consider yourself a good beginner Add whisky or daily dram - you can't go wrong here
A little bit too unbalanced for me
This is an example of a simple and honest daily dram that does not pretend to be something more than it is.

Fresh fruits, flowers, honey, chocolate, hay, a hint of barrel char and baking spices. Very tasty. Wouldn't recommend adding water, it takes away from the mouthfeel and diminishes the flavours. Not the most complex of single malts but then again it isn't really meant to be one.

Tomatin 12 Years Old Place of Origin: Scotland Region: Highland Producer and bottler: Tomatin Distillery (Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co Ltd.) Category: Single Malt ABV: 43% Volume: 1000 ml (Travel Retail) Bottling date: 05/10/2023 Cask Type: Bourbon and Sherry Cacks Min. aging: 12 years Hol. filtration: done Dye: present Nose. Sweet-spicy aroma of below medium intensity with typical Highland oiliness, but with a strong bias towards fruitiness. Reminded me a bit of Glen Garioch 12, but in the latter everything is more rich and bright. If only we could add more degrees to it and remove cold filtration, it would be in the top league, but it’s still a pretty average guy. The nose reveals malt, floral honey, heather, fermented apples, baked pears and mangoes, yellow apricots, creme brulee, sawdust with resin, orange peel, some nutty tones, ginger. Taste. Sour citrus at the start of the sip, followed by honey-drenched fruit, creme brulee, vanilla sweetness, some woody and nutty tones, light ginger and pepper at the end of the sip. Pleasant, but a little faded and watery. Aftertaste. A short. A little raisins, orange zest and ginger. Summary. A nice, fruity Highlander, soft, easy, pleasant to drink, but with absolutely no pretensions to anything more. Rustic in execution, which apparently indicates the active use of refilled or not very well prepared barrels (besides, the “woodiness” is noticeable in the taste). But there are simpler whiskys for a similar price (such as Knockando 12 or Benriach 10), so we’ll generously give Tomatin a point. All in all, a normal entry-level whisky. Score: 82 out of 100.
It’s a bit generic and a one dimensional Whisky at first, however it does improve with time the prickly harshness of youth is rewarded with a nice mellowing gentle light fruity taste.
Not bad, but valerian makes itself felt ...

On the nose, toffee apples, vanilla, it's quite greedy, but more on candy than on pastry. The fruits are very present all the same, tropical fruits especially, pineapple, banana, maracuja, coconut. Behind it is a little forest, leafy. More like a palm leaf. The palate is a little light, spices and pastry cream add a little flavor, but it's still not enough. Chocolate pear, paprika and saffron, silky side. The finish is good, without being stunning, on varnished wood, earth of heather, nutmeg. It's not bad at all, very fruity and all the same a little telluric, forest. Very friendly. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2021/10/tomatin-12-yo.html

Definitely better than the Legacy, but even this whisky has a body that is too light and not very complex. Vanilla, honey, pear, a little malt and, despite his young age, wood. Surely if evaluated in light of the modest price it could be worth a few more points, but considering that I never base evaluations on price, 76 is the best I can give.
