The nose is very pleasant, peaty with both sweetness (vanilla, melon) and a little salty. It did not seem particularly medicinal or menthol. In the mouth, does not confirm so much the promises. Long enough to ride on peat, leather, maybe a little camphor too. Distinctly below Lagavulin in terms of width and body. This is the first whisky that I have tasted and loved, and the final is no stranger: powerful smoky wood rounded by a bit of vanilla, somewhat acrid retro-olfaction, on the ashes. A little water peat moss, develops a little roundness (salted butter caramel).
very intense and still rather balanced/complex single malt

Comparison Laphroaig 10, 40% AbV, WID 42885 - stale vs. fresh 2cl 1 year in the bottle vs. 2cl from the fresh opened bottle https://www.whiskybase.com/.../wh.../42885/laphroaig-10-year-old #WagnerAlexTastingNotes One year ago I put 2cl Laphi 10 in an empty bottle and since then the flat has been shaken and opened regularly (at least once a week). Today, the single malt was compared to a "fresh" Laphi 10. In the following, I will only discuss the main differences. Aroma: old: quieter, sweeter, more vanilla, earthier new: edgier, younger, more ashen smoke, floral Taste: old: bitter, mineral, not really tasty (nicely expressed) new: much rounder and more balanced Finish / aftertaste: new: a touch stronger Comment: An interesting experiment with finally clear winner. In the aroma, I found the old Laphi much more lovely and "salivating," but the taste of the old, stale Laphroaig 10 was not for me. I also could not finish the dram and he walked into the casting. Thus... Points: new: 90/100 (yes, for me still one of the best standards, even though he only has 40% ABV) alt: 75/100 (the aroma saves him from total crash)

Tasted from a 5cl sample bought in 2022 at a UK supermarket. I don’t mind the floral notes, in fact I like them quite a bit. Even the soapiness is fine. But Laphroaig’s standard expression is becoming too neutered to accurately reflect the distillery character. Everything is inoffensive until the finish.

Noticeably laphroaig, but starting to veer quite far from the classic heavy phenolic character we know and love. The overall impression is citrus-fresh, floral, and distinctly soapy. Yes, a really nice violet soap with herbs. |

Light, woody, dry, fresh. At the start, defined by the somewhat tired feeling casks, with astringent bitter herbs and spices. Then, as it develops, soapy (both in flavour and texture), with mild herbal and phenolic nuances. Refreshing citrus fruits. Quite bland for a peated whisky. |

Sour peat and citrus, like smoking decent but not great weed. Remains soapy. Finishes unpleasantly cardboardy and drying, like licking the box it was shipped in. |
What I realize every time are variations in quality. Sometimes the 10y Laphroaig is very mature and complex, sometimes it's one dimensional and simple. This bottle from 2021 is a simple one. But that's what makes whisky even if they try to make it consistent. Nethertheless, I love it.

good and full daily dram during cold days
Still a great dram – the whisky that turned me into a ‘malthead’ 30 years ago. On very first opening, really different –Laphroaig? - yes. but also a distinct smell of molten candlewax – like the smell when you first put out a candle, the white smoke from the wick. So oily you could slip on it. Sunflower oil, oily mouth feel, fresh woodsmoke, then light phenols gather pace and the solid malt character of the spirit in tandem with the smell of seaweed from the shoreline sweeps up from underneath – sweet and solid – glue/ yacht varnish or over ripe bananas. The ephemeral candlewax notes die out by the second dram – almost a shame because if you could capture this complexity all the way down the bottle and in each glass it would surpass greatness. Underneath the smoked kippers a strong background of damp wood and leather from the casks. Some delicate fruit notes – pear perhaps - lurk beneath the peat. Vanilla sits discretely in the background and perhaps a hint of salted caramel too. On the way down – a wave of coal dust passes like a freight train leaving a peaty, malty sweetness which eventually dries out and lends a touch of bitterness in the finish. A beautiful integration of peat, malt, casks – and time, which if you have ever been to the distillery itself, will instantly transport you back there.
sweet with a hint of salt, sea breeze, grass, decomposing wood, burnt ointment, pink rash cream from a half remembered childhood memory... and it all works like a charm, distinctively good and unforgettable
Aroma: smoke, medicine, dark chocolate, vanilla Taste: dry, cold smoke, medically Finish: long, smoke, dark chocolate, oak
The nose is seductive and so characteristic. At the opening of the bottle, it is violent on the bandages, in the end, much more licked. The mouth is too shy. On the other hand, the rubbery notes remain long in the mouth. A nice experience for less than 30 € anyway! Very good Q / P.
Aftet more than 2 1/2 years of silently breathing this Laphroaig gets better to my taste: The strong medicinal peatsmoke-only note went some steps in the background revealing more complexity.

In the glass, it's exactly what you'd expect. The nose is quite mineral-iodine, with sea salt and seaweed, organically complemented by medicinal smoke and bandage motifs with green paint. Next come fruity tones (orange zest and apple peel) combined with tart herbs. The taste largely repeats the aroma, complementing it with oak tones and herbal bitterness. The finish is short-lived, with minerals, herbs and peppery tang. A very smooth, balanced example.

A revelation to some but simply disgusting to others, Laphroaig 10 is arguably the most intense of all single malts. Your taste buds are shocked by the unfamiliar, dominated by dry peatiness. The nose reminds of an old steam engine, road tar and burned rubber. Rotting seaweed, iodine and mineral notes combine with chimney smoke, TCP and a cold ashtray. Flavorwise, an overwhelming phenolic blast subdues the underlying sweetness. Crisp oak and salty dryness characterize the peaty finish. Whether you love it or hate it, you will never forget it! Without water the nose is smoky, medicinal, but also with some light fruit- maybe melons and even peaches. The smoke rushes through the initial taste on a wave of pleasant tannic bitterness and there is a slight lingering acidity. With some water the nose opens to red and green sweet and sour apple notes, there is more cereal sweetness to the taste and the whole thing is wrapped up in petrol-soaked smoky rags. Decent longish finish of mostly bonfire smokiness, becoming sweeter again. I've had this bottle open a good few months; I could swear the smoky and medicinal notes have lessened over time. Shame about the CF and Caramel.

Well, a good standard. But there are just under 50 € just too many candidates who stand out clearly.
The nose presents a good medicinal peat, iodized, with a hint of ether, salt and lemon. And that smell of bandages, is it betadine? It's like walking through the corridors of a hospital. In the background, anise, dried fruits and wood, maybe a little dark chocolate, mocha. The entry in the mouth is a little watery, a few degrees missing, but it is warm and friendly, with licorice stick, more salt than caramel, pepper, cola. It's almost sparkling. There is some coffee in the finish, but with very little bitterness, and still some chocolate. It's long in the mouth, deep, oily, spicy (cumin I would say, and a pinch of paprika). An inimitable flavor, and a classic, of course. The powerful peat, the nails and bitumen side, and this medicinal touch are absolutely stunning. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2020/05/laphroaig-10-yo-40-original-bottling.html

-90's 10YO Laphroaig... we're talking what got me hooked some 30 years ago. And since I noticed I had not done a review on this, why not do a side by side with a sample from a -90's bottle (#215660). This has lost a lot of it's "oumpf" over the years, but that said as I had another dram of the new bottle it grew on me... maybe because my comparison was empty. I have experienced more catastrophic decline, but the sad thing is that all the old bottle comparisons I do all point in that direction. The conclusion is that I've become old and grumpy and everything was better in my youth.

It starts of surprisingly similar, and familiar. Peat smoke, tobacco and a backdrop of zesty citrus. If anything, there is more peat on this recent bottle. But while it stays the same over time, the old one develops. Behind the peat there is more fruit and a honey like sweetness that is missing here. |

If the nose was surprisingly similar, the taste is surprisingly different. This arrives thin. Ample amounts of peat and smoke, but very gentle on spices. The old has body straight from the get go. Way more complex in fruit, as well as notes that are just not present in the new. Dry tobacco, saltyness, even chocolate notes. Don't get me wrong, I like this one, but the old one... just so much more. |

Ah yes, this bottling is just fun. I've never bought a bottle of the 10-year-old because I've always preferred the bottlings with a higher drinking strength, but when I was out in the evening, I've often gotten the absolutely solid 10-year-old into my glass in various bars or pubs and it enjoyed every time. A very strong and heavy peated malt. Even tho it's at 40% ABV and colored and chillfiltered. It's definitely no beginners malt. The intense flavour can be very overwhelming, but once you get used to it's power it becomes quite rewarding. A glass of laphroaig 10 can last me for 2 hours easily without getting boring. It's pretty much all peat but there is quite some complexity within this peat.

The tendency is clear (although the differences are small): The smoke component (medicinal, bitter) is slightly weaker with longer opening / more oxygen, but the whisky is rounder, more mature. I like the 1/8 sample best. --------------------- Overall, of course, great standard smoker with age for very fair € 30.

This was a darling malt from the beginning of my malt journey 40 years ago. I compared it to an older bottling, which was sligthly sweeter and sligtly less peat pungent. Nothing to fuss about. It is still the most expressive laphi around, and despite its rather deplorable low abv of 40 GL, it beats any other affordable bottling, the cs included. It had this typical seaweed desinfectant iodine core big time. I was very positively surprised about the still flawless character and quality of this version. Needless to say that a 46% unchillfiltered uncoloured version would be VERRRY welcome. Sometimes I add a shot of cs.

Review from my blog: http://thewhiskyagents.com/?paged=2 Noses quite dense and thick, brine and seaweed give way to some citrus fruits. All of that is of course smothered with cold smoke, ashes and iodine bandages. Some, wet tarry ropes are present and if you manage to get past all those hefty aromas you could find some vanilla hiding in a corner. The mouthfeel is oily, which I like a lot. Some anise, liquorice and a just a hint of Demerara sweetness. Good, light wood influence and of course ash, tar and a gulp of ocean water. Not overly complex but good Laphroaig the way we know and like it.

One of the very best smokey and peaty whiskies in the world. Macho, not penetrating into the nose, but all-round very drinkable despite the intensity. Never gets boring.

It's a good easy drinking Islay malt. Maybe the best if you want to get in touch with peated whisky for good money... also good for smoked cocktails. To me as I love the Laphroaig distillery ( the old 18 and the 10CS some of the greatest malts released in a core range) it just lacks too much everywhere very watery...with 48% this would be easily within the AB10 /Laga 8 range - smoke needs fire in this expression the water killed the fire. I like the QC at 48% much more even as a NAS.

Beautiful, strong smoker who comes bronchely due to the smoke in his nose and surprised in the mouth with a mild oily sweetness. But could easily tolerate 3 better 6 vol.% More, so it seems a bit thin in the mouth.

Love the fruitiness in this one, searching for a cask strength at a reasonable price

Still the standard. Of course, a PX Cask is more sophisticated, an 18-year-old more complex, a Quarter Cask more powerful and of course the CS much more bombastic, etc ... But this is the Laphroaig, which revives the entire atmosphere of the distillery at a low price. The classic. Also, he would do three or six percent alcohol more good, but even so he just just right. Simple, honest, Laphroaig!

A very good standard. The low ABV is obviously a pity, but still it doesn't feel weak or watery.
Nice one, with a quite singular profile. But too reduced. Not my favourite among the entry-level Islayers, but a must try. Lacks a bit more ABV and complexity to get an higher score in my view. (Why did they coloured it ?)
The main difference for me is the lack of the medicinal side as the key note in the whisky. That was what got me hooked. Now it is more on pure peat than medicinal. I don't think I can pick Laphroaig any more in a blind tasting. Sad.

The pioneer of my passion for whisky. Of course you have to stand up to these strong medical marks. If this is the case you have an excellent smoky whisky for a very reasonable price. Should you have tried.

Not bad whisky but a bit boring
The aroma of a new leather jacket, lacquer, paint, taste, something unclear, bitter chemical. In general, the impression is ambiguous.

A real solid and powerful dram. I like it
It's a classic all time favourite of mine, and a bit sentimental because this whisky really was the reason I fell in love with scotch. The nose is smoky, with a bit of tar and some oceany vibes. It reminds me of sailors coating their boats in the harbour. And there's some beautiful honey on the nose. On the taste it's a wonderful, long lasting smoke. A sweetness of honey, along with some pears and fruits, once the smoke has settled. I love the Laphroaig 10, and to me it seems like it has been rather consistent over the years I've drank it (15 years or so).
As is well known, opinions differ on ''Laphroaig''. In my opinion, this will not change much if the malt hits the palate visibly more tame and reserved. The smoke dominates the basic picture, but also gives an idea of the clean distillate that is produced. The kegs aren't necessarily an effective contributor and tend to look a bit worn out. Bottled a little stronger and without added caramel, it could certainly do better.

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2024/12/23/loose-ends-december-2024/ C: The nose is charming but more lacklustre on the palate. Another ashy finish, this doesn’t have a patch on Ardnamurchan [WLP], say, which I blend in a little to bolster this underpowered classic. As a blended malt, it excels. Au naturel, the independent bottlers typically tell us where the whisky is really at. 83/82

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I think, with the exception of the Balvenie DoubleWood (which is a personal favourite at this level), it's probably the best thing on a supermarket shelf. It's not overly complex, but the flavours it does have are strong. I've read a few comments on here regarding the ABV not being strong enough; I actually disagree, I think the 40% works really well with this.

Category: Single Malt Producer and bottler: Laphroaig Distillery Region: Islay Fortress: 40% Volume: 700 ml Bottling date: 01/31/2020 Barrel type: ? Age: 10 years old Filtration: yes Dye: present Nose. Such a strong smoke, a fire, as, for example, the closest competitor in terms of exposure to Islay, Ardbeg 10, is not observed in this Laphroig's nose, rather it is fading coals and ashes, ash. However, the nose is by no means unattractive, forgettable. The aromatic profile is based on marine motifs (iodine and algae, fish marinated with pepper, bay leaf and lemon slices) and medical themes (pills, Vishnevsky ointment) with nuances of sheep's wool. Fruits (apples, pears, plums, cherries), berries (dried blueberries, cranberries, lingonberry juice), vanilla and the malt theme of shortbread cookies add sweetness to the nose. In general, it turns out smoothly tailored, rich in diverse nuances, a wide aromatic palette. On the palate, peat, burnt wood, pepper bitterness manifest themselves more actively, but still not as powerful as we would like. Probably due to the low proportion of alcohol and the use of cold filtration, the whisky does not feel dense and oily enough. In general, the taste can be described as sweet and smoky. There are the same iodine, marine motifs as in the aroma, again smoked fruits, lingonberry juice, toffee, baked chestnuts, hot smoked chicken, dried smoked mackerel, very sweet malt. Due to its excessive, as for me, sweetness, the taste is sometimes perceived as rather cloying. The aftertaste is of medium duration, dryish. Peat, sweet malt, spices, iodine. An interesting, non-trivial whisky spoiled by excessive reduction. A good entry-level malt from Ayla, but I still find its taste a bit unbalanced, emphatically malty, as if you are drinking a smoked sweet lager with demidrol (hehe). So, for now, its competitors of about the same age (Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila) from our favorite island, I personally, give more pleasure. Well, this one is purely in the mood. Rating: 83 out of 100.

Laphroaig 10 *Age statement: 10 years old. *Alcohol percentage at least 46%: no, 40%. *Amount of filtration: chillfiltered. *Use of caramel coloring {E150a}: Germans claim there is ‘farbstoff’ in this, which must be disclosed in some European countries. (1 out of 4, regarding craft/integrity presentation). Nose: smoke, peat, orange zest, cherry, laurel leaves. Palate: minerality, whole grain sliced bread, wet brown Band-Aids, rotting wood, salty peat. Finish: salty peat, cola and smoke. Harsh, smoky, brash, yet delightful. The palate is unkind and weird, but like most abusive relationships: you just keep coming back for more. At first there was this whole grain note that I really irked me in the wrong way, but it seems to have subsided these last few months. It was so bad that I convinced myself of my ability to detect a Laphroaig 10 blind in a taste test without knowing the lineup. How wrong I was, now I can barely detect it, while a short while ago it made my face scowl.
Color: Dark gold Nice standard introducing the typical Laphroaig style.

It's a wonderful introduction to the world of peaty whiskies. Distinct medicinal smoke characterizes it. Pleasant sweetness and wood spice blend beautifully. The Laphroaig 10 is an absolute classic, lacking only a bit more power. But that's probably precisely its secret to success.

Overall, I would say it has a different, more herbal, earthy, and muddy note compared to other classic island whiskies. On the nose, it's very rich, varied, and characterful; on the palate, it's softer, juicier, and slightly complex. The finish is also quite characterful and satisfying. It's a beautiful and unique whisky that should be experienced.

On the nose, it's different from other island whiskies. There are aromas of salty seawater, dampness, ash, wet wood, a hint of menthol, old oak, burnt wood. There are also smells of cooked vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, onions) and spoiled, rotten fruit. A drop of water intensified the medicinal aromas, strong dampness, bandages, and iodine tincture. After a while in the glass, subtle, sweet malt and red jam-like aromas emerged from the background. |

An honest whisky, well developed, with rather unusual notes. This Laphroaig, found in large surface, by its profile, is not a very accessible whisky for the uninformed consumer. It's a good entry-level but do not ask too much, especially on the final ...
Rocky Moss The Laffie 10 is such a classic that I do not have to make any kind of introduction, right? This one was bottled in 2013. It should be present in every cabinet, actually. Suprisingly sweet nose on melon and apples, joined by a light smokiness that is less medicinal than I expected (in comparison with previous batches). Very herbal and soft on the spices. Brings rocky moss to mind. But the typical maritime elements are absent, much to my surprise. It is soft and sweet, but immediately very sooty (nice!). Lovely touches of peat that remind me of wet earth, barbecue ashes and seeweads. But it is also very herbal on the palate. All kinds of garden herbs pass by the tastebuds. A small salty edge. The finish is long and the sweet peat has the final say. I am somewhat surprised. I remembered the Laffie 10 with much more peat and medicinal touches, but this is almost soft and sweet.

The first glass of laphroaig is really the best. After that, it quickly diminishes in the bottle. If you taste old laphroaigs this is a shame. I've heard someone call this firewater. And I think that's a great name for this laphroaig.
Only 40% alcohol really weakened his beauty. But the price is very good. The taste score is 83 points, plus 1 point for the price, for a total of 84 points.
I am a man of simple rules. I see a bottle of Laphroaig 10 and I buy it. Good all rounder. One of my most favorite go to tipple. Burning hospital and seaweed parfait
My all time favourite. On the nose: cold smoke, salt, algae, medicinal, gauze bandage, sweetness, some oak In the mouth: smoke, charcoal, ash, very light malt sweetness on the finish, soft, dry, alpine herbs, tart woody, uncompromising, medicinal (gauze bandage, plaster, iodine, disinfectant) at the end. A little air makes it more intense, freshly opened the handbrake is still on.
OK, peaty and very Laphi typical. But otherwise rather boring.

Once you, better your nose, have gotten used to the smoke, the smell reveals a very nice, clear aroma that you would not expect from a ten-year-old, 40% malt. As far as the nose is concerned, the malt convinced me. Here I absolutely understand the fans of this distillery and the whisky. If the weak-bodied representative smells so good on the alcohol side, how tasty does the CS version have to be? In terms of taste, it starts off a bit light and flat for my standards, but increases again over the course of the day and ends in a long, dry beautiful finish. A very, very decent standard and a nice introduction to this traditional distillery.

Immediately an intense rush of smoke in the nose. Strongly phenolic, medicinal - like charred residue from used gauze and bandages. Something keeps flashing behind it, like warm, fresh asphalt. After the enormous smoke has literally cleared up a bit, the other flavors now come to the fore. First a dash of lemon and the zest of it. Some vanilla, overall it gets sweeter - even the smoke gets progressively sweeter. This is followed by tree resin, forest herbs and pine needles. But also maritime notes with algae, sea water, iodine. Now the malt really opens! The smoke is now more and more in the background and a beautiful, rich fruity note - especially a ripe lemon, but also something like apricots or peach - steps in front of the scent curtain. I wouldn't have guessed. |

Slightly thin, watery entry with a smooth mouthfeel. The low alcohol content of 40% is noticeable here. Immediately on the tongue a good portion of the medicinal smoke. The malt also appears more ashy and drier. Then comes the lemon and vanilla as a counterpoint. Some sweetness is also there - but only discreetly, cannot assert itself. The resin and the forest herbs also show up. Towards the end, another boost of tar and asphalt, some salt and algae. |
