This bottling was too smoky for me. It's just my opinion. Nevertheless very good quality.

A Lagavulin 16 from a good batch, iodized and smoky (Lapsang Souchong) to which candied oranges would have been added, fatter and rounder. It drinks itself.
a great whisky harmonious and yet with a little inner tension through an interplay of flavors I find it perfect that the PX Cask Finish character is rather subliminal and not so dominant i have touched the sky
nose: kippers, brine and sea water, strawberry jam, sweet, and a ray of pure red fruit, like sunshine coming through a cloudy day (if you take my meaning) palate: much sweeter than the 16, a woody sweetness, which yields slightly to a very salted caramel and smokiness. light tar, and a definite sootiness. walnuts, cured ham. finish: finish is reminiscent of the 16, but there's more ham, and the fruit is more noticeably red. a bitter tar runs in the back, but all in the manner of a charming Lagavulin. This is very clearly Lagavulin, but emphasizing the subtle sweetness, there is distinctly red fruit running through this (it is PX finish, after all), and a gentle ham. The aromas and flavors are more distinct than in the 16, but it's less seductive in feel. All the same, this remains an excellent bottling, though it falls just behind the slightly better integrated 16.

I had the opportunity to taste the 18-year-old Distillers Edition from Lagavulin at the Whisky Fair Limburg 2025. The only flaw is the low alcohol content. Very tasty and drinkable!

A very Lagavulin-like harmony of sherry and peat Overall, the PX-style sweetness is exceptionally well balanced by the peat and bitterness. As far as I know, the DE series uses American oak seasoned with wine, and perhaps because of that, there is also a noticeable caramel-and-vanilla character. Depending on personal preference, some may find it a little too sweet. There is plenty of flavour, with just enough black-pepper spice to keep things lively, so despite the relatively low ABV, the palate does not feel hollow at first. That said, this applies mainly to the initial impression. As enjoyable as it is to hold in the mouth, it becomes noticeably simpler once diluted by saliva. I cannot help wondering how good this would have been with another five percentage points of ABV. The finish is particularly impressive. It is very long, but not simply because the wood smoke and peat linger. Coffee and dried-cranberry notes stay with it all the way to the end as well. Compared with the current DE as I remember it, the sherry influence here is considerably more pronounced. More importantly, whereas the current version gave me an unpleasant perming-solution-like note, this bottle is much gentler and seems to present only the enjoyable aspects of the profile.

Notes: Creosote-like medicinal peat, raspberry, wood smoke, dried cranberries, caramel, vanilla, nutmeg?, black pepper, plum, a slight fishiness, salty sea air, coffee The first thing to emerge is a creosote-like medicinal peat. There is almost no noticeable alcohol. This is followed by the tart fruitiness of raspberries, together with a wood-fire smokiness. The peat is clearly present, but sits more in the background and remains nicely balanced with the fruit. Once my nose begins to adjust to the peat, sweeter aromas of dried cranberries, caramel and vanilla start to appear. Nutmeg and black pepper provide a spicy prickle that feels quite distinct from alcohol, while the plum note gradually becomes more pronounced. Towards the end, there is a slight fishiness along with a salty maritime character. With more time in the glass, a coffee-like aroma develops. |

Notes: Oily, nuts, intense syrupy sweetness, mild saltiness and umami, coffee, slight bitterness, plum jam, caramel, oak, creosote-like medicinal peat, black pepper, dark chocolate, vanilla The texture is quite oily, beginning with a rich, nutty character. This is followed by a substantial syrupy sweetness. Just when I start to wonder whether it might actually be too sweet, a gentle saltiness and savoury umami emerge, followed by a pleasant coffee-like bitterness that brings everything back into balance. The sweetness is intense enough to remind me more of plum jam than fresh plums. There is also plenty of caramel, together with a slightly damp-wood-like oakiness that comes through retronasally. The creosote-like medicinal peat from the nose continues onto the palate. Rolling it around the mouth brings a mild black-pepper prickle and spice, and as it mixes with saliva, the bitter edge of dark chocolate becomes more pronounced. |

Notes: Wood smoke, clove, plum, dried cranberries, slight bitterness, dark chocolate, coffee, creosote-like medicinal peat, malt; long Unlike the relatively restrained smokiness on the palate, a strong burst of wood-fire smoke comes through on the exhale immediately after swallowing. A cool, aromatic clove spice stimulates both the nose and palate, while the flavour of plums lingers in the mouth. As the tartness gradually subsides, it gives way to the sweetness of dried cranberries and the bitterness of dark chocolate. Creosote-like medicinal peat, coffee and a touch of malt remain, while the dried fruit and dark chocolate also persist all the way through. The finish is very long. |
Compared to the 4/500 this one appears a little smoother with less peat and a little more oak, at least in the nose. In the taste it is quite similiar to other DE Bottlings, yet a little more complex. The extra one or two years of maturation really worked.

I have had the possibility to get the Laga Distillers 1995 next to the 1997 and 1998 and this one is so much better from my opinion. It is so much better balanced and if you have the opportunity to get one of these bottles you should go for it :-)

Great part, great balance between peat and sweet fruit. I just enjoyed it as a sample, even if it is actually not very complex or could have a few more rough edges. It's almost too round for a Lagavulin.

More% would have done him good. He is delicious anyway.
Just a few remembered impressions from a tasting ... Good whisky. Unfortunately the nose didn't offer that much because of notes in the front ('window glass') where I couldn't really get through this time - it didn't get very round. The taste was very good.
This is one of the wonders of whiskydrinking. Everyone else and their moms seem to adore this very bottling. Except for me. I was really interested after countless raving reviews, and when I tried it... Meeh. Okay, the nose is definetly great. Sweet bbq smoke, earthy, marine, sherry and old leather. Totally my favourite style. But the palate was so underwhelming I was puzzled at first. Thin, watery, harmless and "too rounded". Maybe its the 43% and my cask strength accustomed palate, but this was a dissapointing dram overall. Tried it from the same sample on two different evenings, so maybe the sampled bottle was open for too long.

Superb balance of sherry and peat. More luscious and less peaty than the regular 1995 Distillers Edition, and a bit more integrated. I wouldn't be able to recognise the one or the other blindly though if they weren't side by side, i.e. they're not worlds apart.
When compared with the regular 1995/2011DE, the 1995/2013 has a deeper and sweeter aromatic profile. The palate is very similar with the 1995/2013 being slightly thicker with a more complex and longer finish. Bravo!

Very tasty and with much more power than newer bottlings.
Honestly, there is not much more than the classics of the genre from Lagavulin I did not catch. More saturated color does not say anything, because the whisky is dyed. Saccharous sweetness is well felt, which somewhat distinguishes this drink from classical lagavulin - and otherwise everything is according to the standard scheme: medical tones; peat; powerful smoky aftertaste. I would not put such high marks only because of 18 years and Pedro Khimenez. All this further separates this Lagavulin from the classical versions, although in general it has the right to exist. Speysadovskaya bitterness, citrus fruits also feel good in taste and aftertaste, but do not give rise to too high ratings.

(Compared to the 81 DE) N: similar to the 81 but everything lighter and less intense, slight alcoholic notes. G: Initially, the bitter taste seems unbalanced, then becomes more pleasing over time, with salty notes. A: More cold smoke.
http://www.weinkenner.de/2013/lagavulin-distillers-edition-die-story-und-die-aktuelle-abfuellung-im-tasting-27350/ Color: Old Gold / Bright Amber Nose: Sparkling and refreshing orange with subtle vanilla flavors and a dash of lemon juice. Emerging peaty smoke paired with iodine, seaweed and algae. In addition a pleasant spice and notes of coal, ashes, tobacco leaves and a pinch of black pepper. Taste: At the beginning rather dull with peat, smoke, coffee and dry ash. This is followed by malty Roestaromen with vanilla and a fruity lemon-orange mix. Only now, the sweet sherry flavors from the PX Fass prevail. In addition, the whisky smokier and saltier. Finish: Long, soft and dry smoky. The peat and the oak wood settle through stronger, so that the finish is a bit tart. Towards the end, delicious cocoa and chocolate aromas are added, which remain on the tongue for a long time. Comment: A wonderful, complex and multi-layered Distillers Edition! Not so sweet, so that could give the impression that the PX Cask Finish was short lived. 91 points (nose: 91 / taste: 91 / finish: 90)
N: peat, sweet, sweet fruits and ashes T: ashes turning into briny - coastal tones, orange, cookies, drying, meaty - smoked ham and spices - pepper, oregano and thyme F: long with spices, salt, pepper, smoke, drying and raisins blind tasting with Kay
Haven't got the chance to compare it with the 18 year old Feis ile 2016 edition, the extra two years in my opinion didn't add to the complexity here.
I would welcome a higher alcohol percentage, but it lacks in no way in power.

A great bottling. I was curious to see how the 18-year maturity would make itself felt. In comparison, I had a 16-year-old version (lgv.4/506, 2001/2017). The differences aren't major, fortunately, but the 18-year-old Distillers Edition is a little more elegant and smooth. The darker fruits and chocolaty notes are a little more in the foreground, while the 16-year-old has more tangy, sour aromas (oranges) and salty, iodine-containing aromas.

Beautiful caramel notes. Eucalyptus; menthol. Seashells. A touch of tar. Almond paste; frangipane. Maraschino cherries. A menthol like Marvis' aquatic mint. Anise, tarragon. Ash and peat are present, though not as pronounced as in other Lagavulins. A slight cauliflower-like sulfurousness in the background. The nose has lost some intensity over time. On the palate, it has a nice, medium-low body, if not a medium one. The maritime side is evident here. Plenty of iodine. Seashells. Slight minerality. A kelpy side. A bit of dried meat. Islay peat finally shows itself. Nice sherry touches underneath. Never as sweet as I would expect from PX; medium-low sweetness, if not low. No OBE, practically. Hazelnut undernotes. A side like the coffee puck left in the machine after espresso. Concentrated forest fruit reduction. Slight resinousness and a balancing bitterness. A musty side; plenty of moisture. Again, that eucalyptus-like aquatic mint side I mentioned. Slight earthiness, animal fat very subdued. Extremely complex. It reveals a different facet with every sip. Very impressive, very enjoyable. |

Super stone fruits are added in the background. Nectarine and perfumed peach. Very obvious sumac and silky chili flakes. A bit of barnyard, a bit of green plum and loquat. A bit of lemon and Kombava zest. There's no complexity here that might have flown away due to the time it's been open, but the clarity ("resolution") of the aromas is unbelievably good. |

Tasted head to head with the `standard` DE 1995/2011 (lgv. 4/499). Even more rich, deep and complex than the standard release, presumably as a result of the extra year or two maturing. Slightly sweeter on the nose, with the raisins and stewed orchard fruits combining with toffee fudge, all beautifully balanced with the soft peat smoke. As with all DEs I`ve tried, a couple of drops of water really helped to release additional complexity. Sweeter, too, than the standard bottling on the palate, leading to the classic Lagavulin trademark finish, where salty aspects linger with soft peat smoke. I love the standard bottling, but this release (lgv. 4/501) is possibly even better in my humble opinion. At under £65 a bottle (albeit needing to be shipped from Germany), this has to be one of the best price:quality drams on the market. Edit: after the bottle had been opened for a month some of the sweetness on the nose was lost, with a slight rubbery note appearing (especially apparent in the empty glass at the end of the dram). The palate remained unchanged. On opening my overall score was 92, reduced to 90 after being opened for a while. Still a cracking dram though!
