Incredibly powerful, rich sherry dominates the nose (crystal clean sherry though, with none of the 'dirty' notes I sometimes get when sulphur is present). It must have been a fantastic cask! The underlying spirit is rather swamped, but when it does emerge (particularly after the addition of water) it brings some lovely youthful and zesty notes. In this regard it is very different to other (older) sherry bombs from Scottish distilleries, slightly lacking the additional depth and complexity that I associate with a longer-aged spirit from a sherry cask (e.g. Glendronach or some of the recent sherry cask bottles from Cadenhead). Beautifully balanced on the palate, with the youthful spirit bringing a lively delivery that then gives way to rich, smooth, creamy sherry. Sweet, creamy and fruity finish, again with the sherry notes to the fore. Excellent, high quality sherried dram, but I do slightly miss the additional complexity you get from longer aged Scotch equivalents (that can be picked up cheaper than this).

Wow, what a nose. Intense and powerful sherry massively stimulates salivation. The taste of the soloist is the hammer. Undiluted beat the extreme Eichennoten with full force on the palate. The sulphurous and sharp notes are not disturbing, they harmonize very well even with the extreme oak. The finish makes you hungry for the next sip. The Kalavan Soloist has long been on the wish list and was my first Taiwanese. I'm excited!

[January, 2020] The Kavalan distillery on Taiwan operates in a tropical environment and therefore the whisky matures much much faster than in the moderate Scottish climate but the angel‘s share is much higher too (the same as with the Indian distilleries or the Caribbean rum distilleries). So it makes no sense to compare the age of such drams with the usual Scottish maturation times, e.g. a five years old Kavalan or Indian whisky compares to a 15-18 years old Scotch both in terms of maturation effects as well as volume losses in the casks (sometimes even higher). I am curious if this bottling confirms the above mentioned rule... ... and it does. This is a clean heavy first-fill sherry maturation at the edge of getting too wood-driven after five years already. There is not much left of the malt but the sherry is pretty fine and compensates for that easily. Very quaffable if you like sherry monsters with a chocolatey profile but I strongly advice to add some water because it really improves both the nosing and drinking experience greatly (a 2-3 points difference).

Нос	88	The colour is very dark at mahogany and the nose offers a clean modern sherry profile with strong but not (too) dominating wooden notes. I do not catch any malt-induced aromas in there but both the sherry and the wood team up for a delicious combo. The nose is quite punchy due to the high abv but some water takes this away and opens up the nose nicely. Water is essential on this nose, no doubt and it releases some malt aromas this way, finally.
Вкус	91	The taste offers no malt impressions either but a fine mix of sherry and wood-driven flavours. Upon chewing it turns a little bitter on waxy notes and tannins, I think this dram cries for water.Ooh yes, now it gets interesting! The taste turns very chocolatey both on milk and dark notes with raisins, plums, oranges and more. This is good for additional three points so my score on this dimension goes up from 88 to astonishing 91 points. So do not fool yourself with a strict neat-only drinking and try a reduction to about 45-48% abv.
Финиш	90	The dram arrives hot (57.8% abv) and coating on the palate with some bitter-astringent moments from heavy tannins. The finish is very long and adds interesting earthy and tobacco flavours. No distracting bitter or astringent impressions here, this was bottled right at the edge of getting too woody. After reduction the finish stays on the tasty chocolatey side virtually endless, wow - this is great (again a 2-3 points improvement over the neat dram).

Since I can only agree with my prescriptions. What makes this whisky was described. Anyone who likes sherry will be well rewarded here. In just six years to get such a maturation is already enormous. The magic word is probably barrels and climate. What kind of barrels might that have been? One can accelerate much in the maturation. The main thing is it tastes. Since the Scots need a little longer for. But that does not have to be a disadvantage. My conclusion: a lot of barrel - little whisky.

Just a quick note because this is a Kavalan soloist and the sherry cask soloists are all solid between 88.5 and 91 points. The flavors (dark chocolate, nut, wood and glue distillate) in the sherry soloists never really change much (unless you find one of the rare 10+ year olds), but what makes the difference in quality between the individual casks is that alone Balance, the alcohol sharpness, the balance and the structure. This is probably my 15th Sherry Cask soloist and they all have that beautiful dry, woody, nutty, sticky sherry note that only Kavalan can do. This one is just perfect in terms of density and intensity. It's unlikely you'll find a 93+ in a Kavalan, but when it's as good as this one I consistently find a solid 90 to 91 for the individual and structured profile. Dark Shrrrymonster, but not dominated by sticky tartaric sweetness like the modern Scottish Sherrymonsters, but by fine and clean aromas. With water it becomes a bit fruitier, but still remains more of a dry sherry whisky. Between 90 and 91 points. One of the best solo sherry casks I've ever had. I've had soloists with only 88.5 or 89 points. But this one is at least 90 points for me if you like Kavalan as much as I do. If not, then you may find it too artificial and not traditional enough, but then you shouldn't rate modern sherry malts over 88 points.

The nose is a dream. Wow. Very aromatic sherry combined with the wood. It stays that way in the mouth, but it becomes way too bitter for me on the finish. I was hoping it would get better with water but was disappointed. 81-85 – Wow, really good one

so what is that? How does that work, should not be older than 4 years, but such an intensity, unbelievable. Definitely no light food for just in between. A classic tasting killer, nothing works after that. Great, and much better than expected. If you want to criticize something then the sulfur note and the yet hefty Eichentanninfracht, here is: if he is too strong, you do not like sherry bombs.

The sherry soloists are all great whisky. So far, the wood has dominated me too much. Here, too, but the wood does not seem too dominant to me. Especially the strong menthol notes are missing. Which is good for the whisky here. A great whisky!

That's a delicious sherry bomb. Of course he doesn't seem too old, but not too young either. You have to be able to tolerate sherry and wood, then it's fun.

The influence of sherry is enormous and makes the whisky in connection with the high alcohol content intense. On the palate, the whisky is a bit one-dimensional and even if the sherry influence is very strong, the oak shows little. The whisky seems quite ripe, but who brings the wall unit "Oak Rustic" with such a sherry whisky in combination, looking for in vain. I really like the whisky. He is not so different from the Scots and blindly goes by in any case as such. Addendum: Meanwhile, the bottle is half empty and I do not recognize my own description again. How could I miss the oak at the first tasting? This soloist has a lot of it. Really good.

Very powerful and concentrated. Really a nice change. If you can handle the (quite fierce) oak tree, then you can really have a lot of fun here.

Нос	88	As if you were smelling a syrup... Intense, woody, spicy, dark fruity. The alcohol is very well integrated. Pickled plums, cinnamon, rum raisins, a hint of mint, damp cellar, old wood, leather, ripe, sour raspberries.
Вкус	88	Powerful at the start. The alcohol is well integrated. The body is creamy and slightly syrupy. As expected, there is also plenty of oak at the start. That's definitely a bit much for some people. Pickled plums and cherries, rum topf, mulled wine spice, raspberries, cranberries, oak spice, burnt caramel.
Финиш	87	Medium length, woody finish. Pickled cherries, cinnamon, very strong oak spice.
