The aroma of copper coins rises together with a slightly funky cheese note, but the overall volume is restrained enough not to feel off-putting. Layered over these distinctive notes are vanilla sweetness and the savory, grainy character of barley husk. Although the funky element takes the lead, clear fruity notes of ripe apple and lemon are still present. Subtle hints of banana peel and watermelon add a quiet but appealing charm.

Color: dark gold. Nose: peat, marshmallows, wild strawberries, rosin, dill, grape juice, electrical tape, smoke, red apples, plums, engine oil, sugar-coated cranberries, dried smelt, fresh bread, polished oak, black peppercorns. Really impressive, with red wine notes layered over peat and Campbeltown funk. With water: becomes more funky, meadow herbs, rubber, earth, burnt paper, camphor oil. Taste: cherries, dark chocolate, spice, red apples, carambolas, salted caramel, cranberries, peat, smoke, black tea, mint. Quite detailed, though a bit too sweet and hot. With water: roasted bread, plums, cacao. Still sweet. Finish: dark chocolate, prunes, gingerbread, mint, cherries, peat, salt, tobacco, smoke, cranberries, spice. Conclusion: interesting how much influence less than half a year in wine casks could bring! The effect is entirely positive on the nose and more debatable on the palate, which is somewhat harsh and sweet. 86/100, with a bonus point for the aroma, which really thrives with water. Finally we got this 2025 festival release available in the US. At about $65 per bottle, it's hard to complain.

In the aroma, besides the strong smokiness and for me quite strange some kind of machine or some kind of industrial smell, I also noticed a quite nice smell of some red berries like cranberries. After a longer time, a smell of white chocolate appeared and also some fresh spiciness. The taste is strongly smoky, maybe oily, medium bitter, malty, slightly woody, grape freshness. That strange machine-like steel aftertaste appeared at the very end. I'm not sure if this whisky won me over...

Perhaps due to the wine cask finish, it delivers an intriguing and unique flavor profile profile mixed with a very familiar, Ardbeg-like heavy peat. If you ask me whether it is good or bad, I would say it leans toward being quite a delicious and well-made dram. However, since I received this as a "booby prize" from a lucky box, evaluating it at its full retail price makes me feel like it is slightly lacking in value for money.

A subtle, underlying peat influence drifts in the background. Fascinatingly, it carries a very specific sulfurous, mineral aroma that heavily reminds me of an outdoor sulfur hot spring (Onsen). After some time in the glass, a bright lemon-like citrus amplifies significantly.

Вкус	77	A fairly strong start; the alcohol isn't hidden and isn't ideally integrated, despite the high intensity of the aromas. Again, an ashy peat note, significantly less fruit than on the nose, then becomes saltier with slight bitter notes.
Финиш	76	Grapefruit and salt carry over into the finish, which, despite the high peat level, only lasts a medium length of time.

This has a lovely nose with a dirty peat note coming through, but from then on in it seems to fight the cask - almost like a competition. Well worth trying, but I think the lack of balance would make killing the bottle a bit of a faff.

Вкус	85	The mouthfeel is good as it seems to coat the tongue - the peat is more prominent and seems to fight the fruit slightly - after a while it seems to smoether the cask notes - a nice tang at the death.
Финиш	85	Quite a long finish with a hint of saline at the death, providing a nice contrast to the fruit notes, although the peat keeps weaving its way through.

84+ Small review, small sample. 60 euros feels like a truly fair price for a CS nearly 10-year old with a nice Campbeltown character. May not need a full bottle, but a clear recommendation.

Нос	84	Nice nose, very focused. Peat smoke, the Campbeltown "it" is immediately noticeable, here more on the light industrial side than on the farmy one. Peppercorn infused oil, redcurrant concentrate, musty malt. Dry hay, a bit wood dusty in the background. Gets worse with water, but not much IMO (hollower, more medicinal).
Вкус	85	Much sweeter here, maltier as well. Red fruit compotes with some light spices. The youth metallic notes are well integrated with a dense muscavado syrupy taste. The wood gains strength as one chews, leading to the finish in a very cohesive way. Water turns it sweeter, while losing some oomph overall. I like it both reduced and neat here.
Финиш	84	Medium length, dry, woody, bitter peat but not aggressively so, a light airy medicinal note as well. Water benefits the finish, making it longer and turning it earthier and more damp-herbal with a way more rounded sweetness (honey, barley sugars, raisins). Quite a nice young fellow.

Reading through the existing reviews, I think I was just unlucky with my bottle. I really like Glen Scotia and was very much looking forward to this bottling, but I can't quite enjoy it. The malt isn't balanced enough for me; there's too much acidity and metallic bitterness on the palate, perhaps also too much ash for my taste. The fruitiness I expected from the maturation in the Ribera del Duero cask is unfortunately too much in the background. Despite all this, it's always a challenge to taste a glass.

Glen Scotia stayed true to its roots with the Campbeltown Festival bottling. This bottling is also only nine years old. The positive aspect is that this time the whisky is not unpeated like last year, which in my opinion led to a slightly disappointing result. This time the whisky is heavily peated. It was initially matured in first-fill bourbon barrels and then finished for six months in Ribera del Duero casks. This is a wine-growing region in northern Spain where the Tinta del Pais grape variety predominates. This is basically Tempranillo with slightly smaller, thicker-skinned grapes. This matches the cherry-red packaging and has also left this hue as a slight tinge in the more yellow-amber-colored whisky. glen-efze.de

the combination of peat and red wine finish works really well for me.

Had to google the wine first, interesting. Not sure I would've guessed a wine finish in a blind tasting, it reminded me of a Fino sherry. The peated GS is lovely, lightly salted, yummy.

Interesting take with a red wine cask and it seems to work well. Creamy vanilla, maritime smoky peat , smoked BBQ bacon , honey barley sugar, oak, liquorice , tinned fruit maybe peach. A few drops of water opens it up and draws out the sweet notes. A pleasant peaty Campletown malt.

A mediocre whisky. Its only merit is its high strength. The aromas play with hints of sea, salt, and meat, flowing from one nuance to another. The wine finish is only in the name. It's not even close to being detectable in the taste, not even a hint.

Very peaty/smoky whisky with minimal wine influence in the form of berries. In my opinion it is a bit young, spicy, and bitter. I would appreciate more, if Glen Scotia would come up with some 12y-18y non peated releases using just refill ex-bourbon and Sherry casks.

Glen Scotia, 9 Year Old, Peated, Ribera del Duero cask finish, Malts Festival Edition. Sample (around 20-25ml perhaps) from a Southport Whisky Club tasting pack. Dark golden. Aroma is charcoal mixed with blackberry in a cohesive way (burnt blackberry pie?), but background burnt buttery banana bread becomes b… apparent, melted margarine and possibly pink peppercorn and seared red pepper. That’s about it. Body is lightly oily. Taste holds together really well for a red wine cask finished whisky. Creamy chocolate-covered cherries leading into a baked banana sweetness, becoming salty mid-palate and then toffee-ish into the finish. A light smokiness on the breath afterwards but the peat is leaning more oily, briney and piney – reminds me a bit of peated Bruichladdich stuff and I’d probably have said that blind. Definitely one of my favourite red wine cask influenced whiskies from those I’ve tried (but I certainly do not go out of my way to try them!) Really well put-together actually. Might have expected this to have been the most likely dud from the tasting set (only because of the red wine cask – I do like Glen Scotia), but in the end it was my favourite. At £60 a bottle it’s quite tempting. 3.6/86

Sometimes it's chance that holds the biggest surprises. This sample was included with a purchase – and it immediately captivated me. A 9-year-old Glen Scotia with a Ribera del Duero finish initially sounds like just another "wine barrel gimmick." But there's more to it than that. Much more. One could see it as an attempt to give a rather classic house style a wilder, more modern dimension. Whether or not it's appealing depends largely on personal taste.

Нос	87	The alcohol is initially present and noticeably prominent. Almost menthol-like and cool, it rises to the nose and overpowers the fruit. The dark berries – blackberry, blackcurrant – are present, but they shimmer through rather subtly. This is complemented by a salty, slightly oily sea note with a hint of damp barley. With some time in the glass, the whole thing becomes more rounded, but the youthful vigor remains noticeable.
Вкус	87	A powerful start with a spicy, red wine-like dryness. Dark grape skins, tart cherry, pronounced tannins. The Ribera del Duero finish adds structure and grip – and a certain restlessness. This is complemented by a slightly earthy, almost funky note that gives the whisky an edge. The salty Campbeltown base shines through from time to time, preventing the wine cask from taking complete control. Nevertheless, the wine's spiciness clearly dominates.
Финиш	88	Long, dry, and spicy. The tannins remain present, accompanied by salty minerality and dark fruit. Towards the end, a pleasant bitterness emerges – like very dark chocolate with a hint of sea salt. Conclusion: This bottling is not a harmonious crowd-pleaser. It relies on contrast rather than integration. The finish is deliberately distinctive, giving the 9-year-old an almost provocative edge. The alcohol is clearly present on the nose, the finish dominant and rich in tannins. Perfect balance is nowhere to be found here – but character is in abundance. It's not a harmonious work of art, but rather an expressive break with tradition. Not everyone will like it – but I do.

Нос	88	Very sweet, maritime and strongly smoky start. Later, a beautiful interplay between sweet smoke and savory, meaty notes emerges. Also abundant with ripe raspberries, vanilla, honey, and herbs. Simple but pleasing!
Вкус	83	Strong and quite spicy at the beginning, then immediately dry, warming and again somewhat savory-sweet. Added to that are plenty of wood, dried herbs, and really strong peat. It's a bit uneven and unfortunately not very well balanced.
Финиш	83	Medium-long, peppery, sweet and strongly herbal.

I can see this being another popular Campbeltown Malts release from Glen Scotia. The wine finish on this is very well done and works seamlessly with the highly peated spirit. For me, it has that balance I need between spirit and cask. There's oliy caramel malt still forming the backbone, but the peat and fruit are both also fully strutting their stuff. It reminds me a bit of Raasay in the way that combination is expressed. Tonnes of fun. My advice - grab one NOW.

An early release this year, exclusively to Unlocked Subscribers, of Glen Scotia's Campbeltown Malts Festival Limited Edition. This year they've gone with a Heavily Peated 9yo finished in Ribera del Duero Red Wine. It's a nice dram, typical heavily peated Glen Scotia with lots of salinity. Mouthfeel is lovely but I think the wine cask has delivered dry tannins and spice rather than berry notes. With each passing year, Glen Scotia's festival releases are getting weaker. The aroma is too piercing and biting on the nose for me. The taste is much milder, sweeter, fruitier. That's what saves the whole rating. I won't buy a bottle.

Exceptionally enjoyable peat nuances and a proper incorporation despite the high peating rate truly elevate this whisky. Uncommon, slightly funky notes add character. Superb! Price performance: Very good! Would I buy it again?: Yes!

Нос	87	Peat has a slightly cheesy, Parmesan-like scent. A touch of briny, green olives. A truly full nose. A slight almond cookie note. Very similar to Ardmore peat, in fact. A medicinal aftertaste. Incense, palo santo, and a Jamaican rum funk.
Вкус	87	On the palate, animal fat, saucisson. More brine. Still the Jamaican rum funk. The palate and nose follow the same path. Dry fish, perhaps. A slight sweetness. Perhaps a naphthalene edge? Earthy peat notes become increasingly pronounced over time. Pickled red fruits; strawberry. Maybe a touch of raspberry. Again, a palate as full and satiated as the nose.
Финиш	86	The finish is quite intense. Beautiful coal, ash, and a full earthiness. A very long finish due to the influence of peat. Salty cookies. Light Parmesan again. Green olives or capers. Although the non-peat notes of the finish fade quickly, the peat itself keeps the finish long with its inherent complexity. Enjoyable!
