This is just a dream of a Lagavulin... on certain days, I would probably rank this better than the legendary first 21yo bottling, depending on if you like something with more power and stickiness (this bottle) or something that is a bit more delicate, complex, and fruity (2007 21 yo). For further comparison, I enjoy this Jazz 2013 slightly more than the feis ile 2014 (which is slightly more austere, less fruity, but just as great). After tasting this Jazz from a sample, I went out and purchased two more bottles in an auction (I already had one in the bunker) -- three more bottles for the future, where this kind of great bottling at reasonable price will be rarer and rarer.

Truly an amazing Lagavulin!
I do not think water is needed to be honest as the flavours seem to go somewhat so only a few drops maximum but for me it was better neat.
Phenomenal stuff. How can a malt be so instantly likable?

Raisin, clean sherry, ink, orange peel, bacon, coastal, dried mango, BBQ.
A flawless whisky for those who like this powerful aspect. I would have liked more peat. This is the peaty version of the Talisker 25yo 2005.
a solid 91. a delicate typical laga with less bacon. it sends me shivers. better finish it within 20 min
Very nice, soft and beautiful whisky.

[October, 2016] I had this dram during a "Lagavulin Bicentenary" tasting at Bonn.In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5. Pls. see detailed review below.
One of the best Lagavulin i have tried so far. It appears to be more sherried and strong body than the Feis ile 2014, beautiful peat with bacon and hay flavor are very relishing !
http://www.weinkenner.de/2013/lagavulin-islay-jazz-festival-2013-die-dritte-29493/ Color: Full gold with light amber Nose: quite fruity orange-sherry-honey combination with lots of coal dust, ashes and soot. In addition burned wood, Campfire, tobacco and old tires. Also medical notes of iodine, ether and gauze bandages are found in the nose. The complete range of aromas is woody. Taste: Soft on honeygrass Orange base. These are joined by fine sherry flavors from accompanied by an elegant spice. Black pepper, peat and tobacco smoke become more intense. There are also iodine, a lot maritime salt, dull herbal notes and more and more oak. Finish: long and peaty. Smoky wood with only delicate orange aromas, tart and dry. Well set but still a delicate, sweet apricot note with underlaid honey through, the little later but of oak and burnt peat is completely displaced. 92 points (nose: 93 / taste: 92 / finish: 90)
[March, 2017] Of all the currently operating distilleries Lagavulin has the greatest flavour profile to me. In the past Ardbeg, Brora and Laphroaig were on eye-level to this - but Brora is gone and Ardbeg as well as Laphroaig went into serious quality issues over the last years. Only Lagavulin stands firm in the eye of the whisky boom hurricane (obviously Diageo manages this distillery at arm's length and this pays off - hopefully they will keep it that way...). This dram is another proof of above: A complex yet very rounded nose with an adorable sweet-peaty-sherry-spicy aromas profile that is simply delicious to sniff. Bold arrival in the mouth, very smooth despite its 51,9% abv. Over the next minutes wave on wave of perfectly balanced flavours roll over your tongue so that it is tricky to catch them all. The finish is of medium length, quite complex and makes you addicted to this stuff. It is hard to resist to pour another dram and another dram and another dram.... I will light a candle every sunday if Lagavulin is able to keep this quality completely throughout the current whisky boom phase!

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2020/11/08/whisky-website-rankings-the-worlds-top-100/ I rarely revisit Lagavulin, perhaps because I know it’s there. Of course, it’s the 16yo I’m talking about. Until the 8yo and 12yo appeared relatively recently, alternative expressions rarely came up – none via the independents that I’ve tried. Sure, there are the festival bottlings and special releases, but they are, at best, annuals [if you can get your hands on them]. This festival expression came from the 2013 Islay Jazz Fest, the same year as I visited Islay for the first time in October. I picked up this samples from the Old & Rare show for a steal [just £5 for a very generous 25ml pour], from the equally generous Tomislav Ruszkowski. N: The abv-strength appears formidable but offers up glorious oils, most gentile/relaxed oily phenols, grated carrot & cabbage [that’s a new one], a dry-crusty saltiness,…. With the smoke being more of a passing glance, it’s the salty oiliness which is this one’s most attractive feature. T: My my, that is a glorious and effortless arrival, everytime. There’s me raving about a single cask 10yo Edradour and a 9yo SMWS Allt-a-bhainne as ‘divine’ and ‘composed’ respectively [reports to follow], but here, we are on an altogether different level. The arrival into the journey continues along savoury oily lines, the more bitter peat always quietly working behind the scenes yet present and expanding, the overall development so involving, and again, so effortless at 51.9%. Phenomenal! F: From start to finish, this keeps on dancing and dancing. What’s lacking? Nothing. The peaty earthy phenols seep deep, leaving a savoury-sweet ash on the palate top. C: Phenomenal indeed. A contemporary classic without a shadow,…. With thanks to Tom.
Nose: relatively light peat, cooked fruit, mango, a little lemon, cake, grass, slightly sour, cheese, pepper, cinnamon, and finally a little bit of ginseng, relatively herbal, elegant Taste: oily and strong in the mouth , peat smoky, then sweetened, light-colored fruit flavors come out, pineapple, lemon, smoke flavors are always there, alcohol sense is aggravated, smoky, tobacco become more obvious, with some bitter end: very long, light The sweet and sour taste and smoky, tobacco, a little bitter evaluation: It is an elegant and balanced raga, I like the smell very much, and the bitter bottom will deduct points

Makes one anxious after the wonders of these festival bottlings. As a lover of the 16/DE OB:s this seems to be the only financiable way to reach the rarified atmospheres of something even better in terms of Laga.
Habitual "heavy" notes are interrupted by grassy tones, cucumber, sea kale.

I waited ages for this bottle to arrive and had convinced myself that it was going to be fantastic. Whenever I usually do that the dram never quite matches my expectations...except for this whisky! Wow...this is the stuff of dreams and is perfectly suited to my palate. Much more refined than other sherried Lagas, but it is simply the best balanced whisky I have had in a long time, with the peat and sherry in perfect harmony. The nose without water is very refined and needs time and some hand warming to release its inner treasures: soft peat smoke and salty sea air combine with a mixture of roasted nuts (chestnuts/hazelnuts etc) and rich, stewed fruits (dark berries and raisins). The addition of water brought it out of its shell further, revealing sweeter fruits (including freshly peeled apple skin, black grapes and a touch of orange), tablet/fudge, roasted coffee beans, and new leather. As close to perfect as I`ve ever tried! Also perfectly balanced on the palate, with the peat smoke more prominent but never swamping other wonderful aspects: zesty fruits and raisins, toffee, charred chestnuts, and fresh mint. The finish lasts forever, and retains its poise right to the end, without descending into bitterness. A true great that needs time and a drop of water to reveal its wonders.

Ink, bacon, and smoked sausage. After waking up, it turns into baked red bean cake. It smells very good and tastes very moist walnut skin... I still don't like this type of sherry.

Like a soft leather soufflé on the tongue, balanced. Very drinkable.
Smooth and nice dram at nose, but the sherry taste overcomes the liquid compressing the other flavours out of the sherry range. Sort of beautiful wowan with too much make up.

Those 1995 butts are magical, and this should be one of the best release from that parcel.

A sweet opening. Chocolate, McVitie’s digestive, rosewood, dried cranberries, and glazed raisin. Mild TCM, and old charred wood added some profound bitterness to the nose, while aeration brought out the gauze and even more smoke. A bit dirty, with hints of horse stable, barbequed meat, and rotten orange berried in peat. There was also a trace of wax. Rather complex |

Syrupy and oily arrival, with the palate sweetened up with burnt sugar and chocolate, while balanced by TCM bitterness. The smokiness opened up gradually on the tongue, but not overshadowing the ripe nectarine. Earthy smoked soil extinguished by brine, interesting to find both earthy and briny profiles |

A bit greasy and an intense, long finish, dominated by peat, dark chocolate (presenting considerable bitterness), and pipe ashes |
A major Laga ultimately doesn't cross over that much. Excellent, complete, complex.

A fairly typical nose. We are on a large peat which does not overwhelm the rest of the aromas at all. Graphite, smoke, bacon, then a little orange and redcurrant marmalade. Light camphor, medicinal, laced with gunpowder. Light nettle and artichoke heart, earthy. Very nice complexity. |

In the mouth we further accentuate the graphite and smoky side. It's fatty, without being heavy. Light ash, gray, pepper, leather and spices (mainly cloves). Still orange, more on the zest this time, with a little basil and salt. |

Fresh finish, on ash, fatty peat, graphite, orange zest and candied orange, Sichuan pepper, salt... Yum, endless. |
It's delicious and unforgettable.
