What makes this product so atypical is the subtle blend of spicy peat and notes of leather and smoked meats. A feast for the palate whose reduction to 43% brings it a perfect balance.
This would be my go-to recommendation for a great example of a nice, balanced Islay. Always enjoyable.
Single powerful malt and more meaty than his Islay acolytes of the same price. Do not hesitate to let him get some fresh air during a tasting.
a warm, fruity and vivid dram.
Mouth is great, the nose is even better. Classic? Classic! A must have!
N: oily, smoke, peat, sweet sherry tones and briny - seaweed T: peat, smoke, pickle, citrus and nuts F: meaty, smoke, drying, spices - and nougat compared with Lagavulin 16 old White Horse label
Maybe not my whisky to rate. I like peated whiskies but not as smoky as this. Not a topper for me. Sorry peat lovers. Ok but not great.
One of my all time favourites. Unfortunately, Diageo/Lagavulin are not known for their transparency nor appreciation of their consumer as an intelligent being, so it seems to be purposely hard to identify a certain bottling run for the Lagavulin 16, adding the fact that the standard 16 yo has been showing quite large batch variations in quality over the last years, this can be quite frustrating, especially when you end up with a bottle of a weak batch. I had some that I rated close to 90, other similar looking bottlings of it barely made it into 80s.
Lots of (non-Islay) whiskies have a predominate sweet taste with in some cases a bitter or smoky edge. Here, it's the other way around; Peat and slightly medicinal, heavy aromas are the base, and the edge is sweet. Really interesting to taste. A great whisky, and a must have in my book!
Great nose - oily, smoky, peaty, sweetish salty. The taste and finish did not disappoint, despite 43%. It's a pity that they don't make them anymore. 23-22-22-22
Aroma: intense campfire smoke, iodine, sea breeze, seaweed, dried fruit, vanilla and a slight sherry sweetness. Taste: oily, full – peat, ash, sea salt, caramel, toffee, dried fruit, spices, black pepper and oak notes. Finish: long, warming, smoky, slightly dry with a touch of dark chocolate and salt. Score: 86.5/100
One of the best standard bottlings of Islay Island. Always my pleasure.

No mistakes, but for me too uninteresting, since no corners and edges. I am sorry that I have to counter the mainstream here and do not distribute a great number of points. Did I catch here at best a rather unfavorable output year? My already started bottle coming from a strange bar has a strangely lame cork. Is it possibly one of the "previous disappointing bottlings" gem. JM? Since I have to just once taste in a very current filling ...
Powerful. A very pronounced nose that stings a little, a little intoxicating. Very characteristic taste. Smoked, peaty, complex but not overly strong. Final long and warm. Bottle opened for about 1 year, which allowed him to relax a little. A classic !

The best of Lagavulin, in my opinion. Smoke, peat, full aroma's, not sharp, good for any occasion, warm on the palate and tongue, softer than the 12-year old expression. Excellence.
Rich and full .Deep amber colour.
Very balanced whisky that shows a continuous flow of liveliness and change. Clear, it is dominated by peaty notes, but not a one-sided oomph, it is more complex with the peat substrate interwoven. This applies to the 2007 bottling (88 points), the 2008 is different (86 points)
Good balance. What seems to be a nice light Islay turns out to be a more complex and interesting experience; especially the iodine. A very good Islay to have as your regular dram.

Very fine and subtle. I love Lagavulin.

The one I drank was bottled in 2021. As my first wine, I drank it on the rocks. I felt that the acidity of its flavor and the bitterness at the end were a bit out of harmony.

Salted kumquats, salted bacon, peat appears as ink, some red bean paste and cantaloupe in the middle, and some acidity, green mango and sour cream appear in the tail. The complexity is good, but the layers are a bit mixed. The alcohol is moderately controlled and the openness is good |

Cantaloupe, tangerine, slightly fermented grapefruit, then transition to roasted walnuts and ash, with some earth and stewed apples at the end. Peat is in the background, not stealing the show. There is a bitter base that cannot be ignored, which is the grapefruit peel. The body is stronger than expected, the flavor concentration is enough, and the alcohol control is satisfactory |

Roasted orange peel, fried walnuts, ash, and a hint of mint coolness at the end, medium to short length |
Still a great dram, but it seems bland compared to Lagavulin from the past. That could be nostalgia though.

Bottle code: L1242CM000 A great piece. It's a shame that the current bottlings of the 16er no longer have such aromatic depth.
For me best available standard bottling of a single malts.
Another jewel from Islay Island. Strong tint of peat and smoke. The first personal impression was, after much anticipation, based on celebrated reviews, rather a slight disappointment, but I gradually came to my taste and now I am really excited about it.
Use only a little water. It is 16 yers old and has a lot to tell. Not so suitable for a beginner. Not for gulping down, take your time. Pricey. E150 color additive. But worth to try.

A great malt at a low price, more animal than young Islays competing with him.
This is truly one of the classic malts of Scotland. You get some smoke, tar, brine, peat and smooth rich finish. If you like Islay than you will love this version. If you like sweet and citrus this is not the Scotch for you, come over to the Glenrothes side. That being said everyone that has a collection will have something from Lagavulin in it for all those sea water drinking earth loving folks.

Great whisky. Unfortunately weaker than the older white horse bottlings. I remember the explosion of peat and wood from a glass of Lagavulin 16 bottled in the 90s. Not so today, sadly. Still a high quality whisky, but not a 90+ rating anymore.

Drank again after 5 years - old love never rusts. Simply excellent! Very important, give him time in the glass. Let stand for 20-30 minutes, also after adding water. Worth it!

A bomb: iodine, smoke, maritime notes such as seaweed and sea spray, smoked fish. A great day at the sea. Also wax/paraffin and burned matches (sulphur dioxide at it's best). With a little water vanilla comes to the fore, dried fruits. Just great, can smell it all evening. |

Mild at first (as mild as a Lagavulin can be) and sweet. Dark fruit and dry, sweetness flashes briefly. Then with full force smoke, spice and again the day at the sea. But now rather right next to the smoker. Then the tannins come through. Gets dry, black tea. With water, the sweetness becomes more present, the spice moves into the background. |

awesome sweet smoke, like freshly smoked fish. Again clearly the sea next door, but rather mild and fresh. Fades into notes of chocolate, BBQ sweetness. |

On the nose it’s heavily peaty, fruity, layered…delicate yet expressive at the same time. Very volatile too; you can smell the peat from a distance(my friend who can’t drink peat whisky must keep distance not to smell it) . On the palate there’s definitely more fruitiness and sweetness, but the peat and smoke are still right there. It feels refined, with virtually no alcohol burn. The flavour is complex and elegant throughout. The finish is long and multi-layered, with a strong emphasis on smoke. Honestly, you could sip this forever!
Perfectly balanced sherry, peat and smoke in the nose. Fresh (citrus), sweet with a pleasant smoke. Oak and peat smoke in the long finish. Well balanced spicy sherry and peaty smoke, fruity with a perfect body. More i can not even say. Who has never tasted in miss something.
Very nice indeed. SGP:457

The biggest peat attack from a standard bottling. WOW!
I tasted two (`Port Ellen`) bottles. One from 2001 (89) and one from 2006 (87). My score is an average of these two.
This is definitely one of the better Islay standard offerings. Taste of peat smoke and licorice. A balanced whisky with a pleasant and long aftertaste.
