Nice balances, oloroso and oak is not too heavy, the distillery character felt well.
Harmonious, multi-layered sherry aroma. Very good.

it holds a certain old armagnac quality.. wine-y and oakey.. thick without being syrupy.. it spells OLD in capital letters.. there’s irish coffee in the nose, with a hefty dose of bitter cherry preserve and vanilla.. on the taste buds, this could be one of those forgotten sherry casks where, after decades, the sherry turns to thick marmelade (supposedly) and you can eat it with a spoon.. strong oak in the after-taste and quite rough.. i crave for another caresse from the sweet, old sherry.. absolutely a whisky for the higher echelons, up there with Macallan 10 and the old, sherried Mortlachs..
second try

Not unique, but certainly a very, very good, well-balanced sherried Tobermory that is better and more "smooth" and less dirty than the Glengoyne 25 OB or a recent Glendronach 1990 26yo #2973. No sulfur. Kinda dusty, leathery (typical older Tobermory/Ledaig), and has this hay in a barnyard component in addition to its well-integrated sherry. I would buy this if it was less than $400, but nowadays, impossible. I'm glad to have tried it but will not compete for these in auctions.
Nose: damn, what a power! Cured pear, wood smoke, 50 tones of sherry, resin, jerked meet, cough syrup and herbs. Taste: very rich and oily, you can literally chew it, nuts, coffee, leather, white pepper, warm oak, smoke. Finish: long, smoky, powerful sherry and nice old oak, becomes dry and fresh closer to end which is very cool. Score = 24 24 24- 24, 96/100!
This is a very special, very, very special whisky of great complexity. Such whiskys can no longer be found for less than 1,000 euros, maybe in a very good and very individual Glendronach Single Cask, but even then you have to be prepared to pay around 700-800 euros. It reminds me of one of the most special whiskys I've ever had, but it's not quite as crazy as the Tomatin 1965, 41yo from JW (ID 1509). Exciting and delicious, a malt to refill again and again and still rediscover. Absolute pleasure whisky.

Immediately after pouring into the blender's glass, a thick gush of charcoal, dry oak, raisins, Armagnac and Cognac, grapes, dark chocolate and mature herbal bitter schnapps, walnuts and of course leather. Must stand for a long time so that this special variety of aromas can be balanced. Then you will find a very old style sherry malt that clearly comes from Oloroso casks. |

Wow, that's what I call intense and special. A very, very ripe heavy sweetness of dark chocolate, sandalwood, sherry and rum raisins. Then a thick load of wood, which is almost too dominant. However, this note then disappears and makes room for orange aromas, some liquorice and very old balsamic treasures. |

The mouthfeel is surprisingly light for these dense and sometimes heavy flavors. Not too dry or bitter. The finish is medium to almost long and becomes sweeter and sweeter. |

Starting with dark chocolate, sultanas, and coffee, it then opened up to dried apricots, plums, orange peel, and rum-laced raisins. A touch of burnt wood also emerged. There's a distinct dirtiness, rotten, wet wood with mold. Aeration enhanced the sherry notes, and cherries emerged. |

A better one of the older Tobermory, I mean 32 years and above
Tried it quite a few times, but the one we opened yesterday was just perfect and had perfect cork (which is rare occasion). Stunning combo of smoked pears and generous old sherry. 24 24 24 24
Tobermory 1972 32 yo Tasting in the blind. Rot, dust, mushrooms, forest litter, plastic bag, mushroom broth, old crumpled skin, pears stewed in marsala, the varnish disappears, eucalyptus, sage, herbs, freshness, grass faded excellent balance. Dried fruits, sweet prunes. A beautiful molt! Completely my style, if the sherry is just that !!! Age, strength guessed.

It was as if I was wrapped in an old, dusty velvet curtain of a provincial theater. And yes, old furniture, old wood, old varnish that the cabinetmaker just removed. A field full of red ripe berries. The taste is intelligent, balanced and harmonious. The finish is long, soft, with a slight touch of cinnamon, leaving a noble aftertaste.

Note The Macallan 1952 probably would have come 2nd if the nose had scored similar to the palate and finish, it would be unfair to push it any further down the pecking order and it was, along with the Glen Cawdor 1964 the only whisky I gave a 96p for the palate. It is where it is because the nose let it down and had a burnt off note I did not like but the taste was lovely. After the 1969 Glengoyne OB cask 1, this is another lively sherried nose with real depth. Multi layered, all sorts of things going on, blackcurrant, blackberry, damson, a little red currant , it is basically a jammy nose, just the sort I like. Hints of polish and varnished wood just add to the overall experience and then it gets a little floral. In whisky terms it is hard to improve on a nose like this. It just keeps growing and developing in your glass |

Really rich sherry and very spicy but also a little bitterness from the cask at first. With some old sherry you can almost taste the wood and see exactly how it has affected the spirit, this is one of those whiskies, it is walking a tightrope between mouth-watering sherry and too much bitterness from the wood. After a big scrap the sherry wins and retrieves things, that is what a quality sherry cask can do, even at this age and there it is the sweetness returns, in spades, wow, that is pure quality, 94.5 for the palate. |
