This is one of those whiskies which has remained firm and implacably excellent through recent years. Lagavulin only had the edge but that is no longer the case. It has to be the go-to peaty malt now that Lagavulin is a tirgid weak mess. You drink Laga 16 now and its peat edge has been so softened that it is scarecly recognisible but Arfbeg 10 is still Ardbeg 10.

Whoo hoo, I'm the one thousandth reviewer of the Ardbeg Ten, what do i win? ………….Bah I've always enjoyed Ardbeg whisky but i don't mind admitting that i give Ardbeg a hard time. I naturally support the underdog, maybe its because I'm british, who knows? - I'm not a sociologist, actually thats not true but thats another story. To me Ardbeg, like Macallan is like Manchester United of the Whisky world, with fans all over the globe waving the Ardbeg committee flag with an insatiable appetite for its success, and i reckon its big enough to handle some scrutiny from little me. So its a great testament to the distillery that i find myself trying to be disappointed with Ardbeg and continually failing. Visiting the Ardbeg distillery for example was a highlight of my Islay tour. I arrrived for a standard 'range' tasting at the distillery one afternoon with very little expectation - to be told that they cancelled the tour because i was the only one who turned up.  A combination of guilt on their part and persuasion [or charm as i like to believe] on my part, resulted in me receiving a personalised and bespoke tour which led to trying some 70's specials from the managers desk draw. I was impressed with what i tried. The least i could do was buy an Ardbeg 10 as I hadn't had one in a while.  The week i opened the bottle i'd sampled some superb drams - some Port Ellen's, 70's Bunna's, vintage Glendronach's and some rare bourbons… so i was still not in the mood to entertain the 'Ten'. The bottle had gone down half way before i realised that i was liking, no - loving this whisky. It was performing better every day, opening out and revealing more and more. Below are my ongoing tasting notes for the impressive standard Ardbeg release: N: Creamy, cheesy, salty, oily, fruity, peat. Kumquats, raisins, cherries, honey on light toast. Vanillas, incense, seaweed, wood sap, soap, lemon drizzle cake, dried apricots, peaches, ripe pineapples. The peat comes in and out in waves. Later becoming yeasty and meaty in the glass. T: Smoke, peat, pepper with a hin and oily in body then some dark rich fruits, fermented quince jam with more smoke and peat coming through building up in layers. Tarred beach wood. Later toffee comes through, rosemary, aniseed…. Later, the arrival is much more buttery with a thicker honeyed salivating body. The smoke is ever present. F: Salty and bitter/sweet, peppery and rather drying. A salivating burst of medicinal cherry cough sweets flow through with a touch of iodine freshness and darjeeling tea to compliment the encompassing charcoal smoke. C: Love it or loath it, this is a very fine whisky.  Personally i'm loving it. Scores a B+

A poem. Ardbeg Ten is a wonderful and classy Islay spirit that offers everything one may wish from a peated single malt. Amazing complexity for being matured 'only' ten years. A recommendation for everyone - got it for a very good price, too. Tasing with Armin Fuchs.

A very good dram. Best full on peat smoke whisky I've had thus far. I really like the more fire and bbq style of smoke in Ardbeg. Also the 46% abv, non-chill filtered and non-colored aspects of this whisky are major plusses! Price is still very reasonable too!

Ardbeg is currently very much advertised here. I took a sip yesterday evening. He smells very intense of smoke, but also fruity, spicy. His 46% have it in me, drive the spit in my mouth. Everything is very warm, comforting, creamy, smoky ... Wow!

Not necessarily an entry-level malt, though it was my first bottle bought. Has rough edges, but who likes peaty whiskys, has the typical Islay character in the glass here. Brutal, open, honest! Is and remains one of my cheapest favorite malts.

Re-tasting a few years later with a new bottle. Overall very flat, boring and "watered down". I gave the last bottle 87pt. With a few drops of Caol Ila at barrel strength, the Ardbeg Ten is easy to drink, I give my Vatting 88pt;)

Like drinking vanilla tea with lemon or eating creme brulee from a very dirty, stagnant and wet ashtray. This in combination with the solid amount of iodine makes its taste profile almost unbearable for me. Along with this, although there are some nuances, I do not find anything particularly complex and exciting in this malt. I respect the natural way it is bottled, but that alone is not enough. A matter of personal perception, which explains how it is possible for so many people to love it. To each his own.
hafssol Expert Junior 86 28 feb 2021 7:02 pm
I had some kind of reverence before approaching this malt for the first time, so I delayed it a bit in my Islay tasting map. Once I finally purchased a bottle, I've been impressed by its strong full taste and clear natural colour. Not only peat in this malt, but some lemon and an intriguing medicinal taste. Thin on the palate and rich rich long finish, for a very peculiar and strong dram. Thumbs up!

Every time I open up this bottle I have a different experience— I have at various times found it to be salty swill and at others to be sooty fish sauce. It's this variance in flavor that I really enjoy about the Ardbeg 10, it always seems like there is something new to find in the glass, it has a great complexity which makes it exciting to pour a dram.
нос · вкус · финиш
Нос 87 Salt and medicinal iodine assault the senses before the smokey embers of a fading fire rise up. Close your eyes and the nose transports you to a windy beach at night, the sound and smell of salt spray wash over you and mingle with the sweet smoke of a distant bonfire and the promise of warmth.
Вкус 84 Sweetness of barbecued meat, caramelized sugars and fats accompanied by a wash of briny salty bog water. As it rests in the glass it develops a sweetness more like dried citrus rind, at once orange or lemon or even bergamot.
Финиш 85 Soft mix of brine and smoke hangs across the palate. Perhaps its the pale color, or the lighter body, I always expect Ardbeg 10 to finish quicker than it does.
Danksy Member Senior 84 16 jan 2023 2:12 am
This is a very baseline, but overall solid Islay single malt. There's not much going on here beyond what it literally says on the bottle: sea spray, tarry rope, intense smoke. I also get a bit of wildberries on the finish, which is rather short. A bit of water or plenty of air doesn't change this malt much at all. There's no hidden depth or development in the glass or bottle over time either. I would recommend this only for Islay beginners. It's much better than the mediocre Bowmore 12, but falls rather short of Caol Ila 12 level.
Yasu89 Expert Senior 82 09 mar 2023 12:48 am
Used to have it at 87-88 the last 5 years over a good number of bottles. Bad batch? Bottle date 17/02/2022 Texture is watery, sours and rubber (usually some of the nice aspects) unbalanced. Less tar and pure peat and a bit too sweet.

A powerful scotch. Medium-bodied - pleasingly full considering this whisky's younger age. Not very complex despite what Ardbeg would have me believe. Strikes me as being a bit too young and rough (I generally prefer older whiskies). Nonetheless: This whisky is well worth its price and for those into the young and aggressive Islay whiskies I am sure it will be money well spent.

Great classic Islay flavours. More of a peaty flavour than a smokey flavour. With water opens up to develop on the mocha-ish flavour lying within. Obviously, the whisky benefits from the craft presentation (46%, unchill filtered,  and natural presentation) which allows the flavour to be very pronounced. Honestly, this is a great dram and is recommended to any scotch head.

A pale straw colour that looks all it's 10 years. Gorgeous smoke on the nose with a hint of caramel. It’s a 10 yo so not hyper complex, a hint of lemon and burnt caramel, subtle tcp. Good burn on the palate and at the back of the throat, nice balance, more lemon and a hint of caramel, all finished by a nice hint of the smoke.  All over a lovely whisky but it's in expensive company at this price bracket. On it's own lovely though

The nose does not show many impressions, but these are very intense and harmoniously connected. I do not want to stop smelling. The last time I had a bottle of this consumed over the space of roughly a week, I noticed it contained some volatile alcohols which I could perceive after a few drinks and more explicitly the morning after. Some whiskies are perhaps more assiduously and conscientiously produced but Ardbeg is probably a victim of its own success and the quality control of the distillate and final product suffers....and noone seems to notice. But I know my alcohols and I know when I get a headache something is wrong. So I will avoid Ardbeg until further notice.

Fond memories of having this out in the ice house while ice fishing. Sometimes I wonder if Ardbeg goes too far with the peat though. It's hard to learn the distillery character. You have to love your smoke. That's for sure. Nose: Smoldering campfire with camphor. Palate: Warmer and saltier but still with massive smoke. Oily. Finish: Smoke explosion on the swallow. Yet seems well-balanced and very long. Water dullens the character some.
hogsheadwhisky Expert Senior 86 02 aug 2021 11:31 am
The smoke is really very harmoniously interwoven with the other aromas in the smell. It's not super filigree but I could sniff the glass all the time. Compared to the 5y, the taste of the Ten is more settled, clearly with a dwell time in the barrel that is twice as long. The aromas are milder and more in harmony with one another. The Wee Beastie is sometimes crisper and wilder here. The Ardbeg TEN is popular, for a 10-year standard this is already a house number.
нос · вкус · финиш
Нос 87 In the glass, the color of the whisky, with its light straw yellow, could easily be mistaken for a white wine. Cold charcoal smoke with slight medical phenolic tendencies towards the end. The smoke is present, but by no means overwhelming - it pushes forward less forcefully than with the half-age Wee Beastie. The other flavors can be broken down well. Green crunchy apple with nice citrus notes. A gentle sweetness wafts in the background all the time, along with a hint of vanilla. From time to time, when you smell it, a trace of iodine comes into your nose, something of the sea, beach and coast.
Вкус 86 Pleasant, not too creamy, tasty mouthfeel. The smoke takes on more phenolic traits in the mouth. The lemon and vanilla from the nose are also present in the taste, the sweetness is less concise as assumed. Instead, there are now more Italian herbs such as rosemary and oregano. At the end, the oak has a pleasant tartness and a slight tingling sensation.
Финиш 86 The finish has a medium-long taste. The smoke, now more cold-ashy and charcoal-like, remains in the mouth for longer. The wood of the oak barrels has a certain sharpness of ginger and a slight bitterness, too little for an espresso, rather medium-dark chocolate. In addition, impressions of vanilla and lemon zest.

S 8.5 Final dram in the bottle. It has oxidised well in the bottle. Now I’ve built a habit to do H2H with The Ten whenever Ardbeg drops a new limited release. I recommend you do the same, you’ll be surprised how much you’d save from fomo. 81-85 - Nice, I can drink more of this

Нос 84 Honey. Morning cereals. Vanilla blossoms. Hospital at a distant. Bandaids. Earthy, ashy peat. Some fresh, juicy orchard fruits slowly surfaced. Subtly brine-y at background. It continues to develop in the glass and the maritime profile intensifies.
Вкус 83 The honey continues. Except from now the masculine, young Ardbeg is on full power. Spicy and heavily peated. Bonfire. Smoked ham. Wave of coastal breeze. Stand by the Port Ellen, and take a deep breathe with mouth open, that’s probably how it tastes. Punchy but not burning. Already well matured and well constructed.
Финиш 84 Long, malty finish. Slowly drying oak. Smouldering bonfire. Some peated juicy fruits. Slightly thin compared to nose & palate.

Нос 83 Smoke, ashes, wood on the fire, then comes vanilla and some citrus filling, like lemon and pineapple. Other than that, there is no complexity, despite the pleasant peat. Yes, it has a certain spice, but it is delicious. There is a hint of salt on the barbecue which is pleasing. With water, open the vanilla and a little caramel with fleur-de-sal. A simple, clear and clean turf.
Вкус 82 Dry, spicy, light brine on a barbecue coming to an end. vanilla and a little malt. With water it has ash, a little medicinal, tannic, vanilla, light citrus and pungent burnt oil.
Финиш 81 Long, new wood appears here and maintains the smoke, salt and a little vanilla.

Attractively priced, but don't let the low price fool you, this is a lovely dram! 72 points for this bottling (slightly above average/enjoyable on my scale). Having had a bottle of the accidentally unpeated 10-- bottled around 2003, and noted by Jim Murray and another panelist as a tie for the highest scored whisky in the history of Whisky Magazine at 9.5/10 ...how very fine that bottling was! I WISH the folks at Ardbeg would make such an enjoyable mistake like that more often, I'll never forget it. Well, this isn't that bottling, but I enjoyed it and will continue to buy more of it periodically...however, if they raise the price, I won't miss it too much. As for that unpeated bottling-- if I knew it would be as good, I'd put $80 down for another if necessary. This is $52 in Oregon, and one of the lowest priced 10 y.o.s we have here, again-- great buy! I can't say this is lightly peated by any means, but some past bottlings were very smokey (too smokey), this one has more peat dynamics and more complexity apart from that...a nice daily pour, IMHO.

Ardbeg Ten is the first peat monster I tried. It left me in awe. I love smoky meat and its flavours so this felt like heaven to me. The nose is smoky but after a while it becomes citrusy and maritime like sand on a salted water shore. Its taste is a combination of sweet and salty followed by intense spice. All of this is covered in peat smoke. All in all, a beautiful natural and tasty smoky scotch.

Blind sample made by me a couple years back. Well, it was a quintessential Ardbeg - which makes too much sense after the reveal. Surprisingly powerful for the ABV. Quite complex even compared to some IB nameless Ardbeg bottlings I have tried. Of course it falls a bit short here and there, but it's always a reliable pick.

I brought a L7 bottle in 2025, after nearly 18 years in the bottle, it tastes awesome. Not sure if the years in the bottle helped, or simply because Ardbeg uses better liquor back then in 2007, I personally prefer this better than the Traigh Bhan (i tried recent 3 batches). Great complexity of flavors, oily, and well-integrated peat flavor -> master piece.

Top Ten Ardbeg Ten... well, that hardly needs any kind of introduction, of course. It is a standard whisky, but of such good reputation that it belongs in each and every whisky cabinet. I have tried several batches and they are all - in my opinion - very close. So hat's off to the master blender, in casu Dr Bill Lumsden. Today I will try a Ten that was bottled on 17th November 2015. Classic Ardbeg nose with some lime, apples and vanilla that are soon joined by the typical maritime elements such as brine, peat smoke and something that reminds me of gasoline. Some burnt wood and even some smoked ham in the background make this nose a joy for the lovers of this type of Ileach. The peat rears its head from the very first sip. And while this Ardbeg remains sweet and creamy it's that salty edge and those notes of peat that give this it's complexity. Lots of mineral elements as well. It's like having gravel in your mouth, so to speak. I quite like this. That mineral side is extra powerful in the long and warm finish. Yes, Ardbeg Ten remains a top dram. Bull's eye every time. Thanks for the sample, Pat!

Ayla classic. The smokiest, smokiest regular release from the wondrous island and it feels great. Color: pale dried straw (no dyes). Body: quite dense, oily. Nose: dry, at first aromas such as fire, peat, tar, sunflower oil, tarpaulin boots, railway sleepers, dry pine branches, chalk are quite distinct. Then the spice motifs emerge: cloves, black pepper, ginger, mint and vanilla. And in the background, after standing a little in the glass, whisky gives off the sweet nuances of toffee, baked pineapple, pulp and peel of pre-squeezed grapefruit and lime. Taste: as if you are literally “drinking” a sweet fire. Against a background of burnt wood, sea salt, honey nectar with freshly squeezed citrus juice, papaya, cappuccino with a creamy milk cap and spices at the end. Finish: warming, very long, espresso, nuts, light wood tannins.

After one year of whisky tasting, I thought I was ready to dive into the deep end and give my opinion about the much-talked Islay monster. The nose is strong and high quality, even though less smoky than I expected. The smoke dances alongside fruity nuances that come together as an olive-like aroma; top notes of citrus fruits, raspberry, strawberry, and vanilla. This is the first time the distance of smell completely changes the nose. The first sip; chili, peppery, citrus, a hint of salt, and smoke. The rubbery and coaly smoky finish lingers for a long time and leaves a minerally, motor-oily, smoked-salmon, and bitter oaky taste in your mouth in the end. It also gave me the weirdest experiences like the notes of melted snow and potatoes. Amazing how every curve with this whisky takes a totally unexpected turn! Every glass is like an endless oasis of aromas! Absolute must-have experience for every whisky enthusiast. 89 points.

Exceptional whisky, even at a young age the smell and taste of alcohol is simply non-existent in this label, delivering a lot of power at the same time. The only flaw for me is the lack of complexity

Good whisky if you like the peaty/medicinal Ardbeg taste. The price is very doable for people who can't spend a lot of money.

For peat-lovers, Ardbeg 10yo is probably the highest-quality `entry-level` single malt on the market, and the distillery many Islay connoisseurs would choose as their favourite. A whirlwind of peat and complex malty flavours, this is an exuberant, in-your-face whisky to be cherished. Whisky Bible Awards 2012: Best Single Malt Scotch of the Year, 10 Years and Under

Serge says: Ardbeg 10 yo 'Ten' (46%, OB, +/- 2015) Colour: white wine. Nose: starts with rather more ginger and green pepper than I remembered, as if the proportion of ‘active oak’ had been raised, but I really enjoy this very dry profile. Plenty of seawater, oysters, wet dogs (we’re sorry, dogs), carbon paper, freshly ground pepper, garden bonfire, wet limestone… There’s even a very particular smell that only old guys and girls can understand, ‘opening a new audiocassette’. And the smell of a brand new Walkman to boot. Lastly, some raw malted barley, so I would call this style ‘kilny’. Mouth: just excellent. More and more whisky lovers are claiming that the Ten beats all special editions, and I think they might right. And since the Ten pays the bills, nobody should complain. Anyway, brine, almond oil, bitter apples, seashells, diesel oil, hessian, liquorice wood, juniper, caraway… Everything is to like. Good body, perfect mouth feel. Finish: long, salty, sharp, very smoky. Comments: that the new Ten killed the 1990 would be an understatement. In truth, the Ten may have improved. Great work, Ardbeg. SGP:358 - 89 points.

Opinions are sometimes divided on ''Ardbeg'', but one has to pay tribute to the high-quality art of distillation of the distillery. Despite its 10 years, the malt is not necessarily a complexity grenade, but the interpretation as a bourbon cask whisky with clean and recognizable distillery character and with an aromatic smoky note is already very well done. The development of the peat smoke in the finish is also very nice, which offers many opportunities to experience the beautiful brandy again.

Nose: There's peat up front of course, but a lighter background follows it. Some seaside brine in the peat, very lightly medicinal, but also a bit of barbecue; the oak comes forward more on a second smell, a touch of sawdust, and there is a little bit of ash in it. The spirit behind all of this has character of lemons, even sweet lemon mold, and a bit of green fruit and plant. Hints of sharper icing sugar, maybe a bit of heat/spice/oil, and a little hint of malt if looking for it; it finishes with a bit of seaweed and balsamic. Palate: A decent amount of oil or butter, medium peat with a lush greenish complexion, and it builds to a heavy peat level. A decent level of salinity now, and along with a medium thickness mouthfeel, the smokiness takes on the form of a mild campfire, even a bit of barbecue with sweet fruits. Sharper lemon comes in as well, with a touch of spice like pepper and cayenne; rounds off with sweeter notes of vanilla and wood sugars. Finish: This is a medium length finish, both savory and sweet, and even a touch of sour later on; decent depth. Not too hot, somewhat nice, and while the peat lingers, there is plenty of lemon zest, tropical citrus, a sweet barbecue sauce, and some wood tannins that gently tickle the palate. Finishes with mild butterscotch and wood smoke.

My earlier tasting notes are from 24/02/2014, and were of a freshly opened bottle. These tasting notes are from 19/10/2014 of the same bottle. The engagement was now more pleasurable. Maybe the oxydisation has helped to make it more pleasant (for me). I also was more generous with adding water now. 3 teaspoons on a dram, dilluting it heavily. In all it made for a much improved experience. But I do not know if I buy a new bottle. It is getting pricey now.

One of the very best standard bottlings on the market - a beautifully crafted dram at a very fair price. Nose - ozone straight off the Atlantic ocean...resiny island peat...iodine...seaweed...fresh and sweet. Palate - a surprisingly sweet arrival, a beautiful light vanilla custard with bitter brulee, surrounded by a mixture of oaky beach fire and peat hearth. Finish - a warming, spicy finish for days...echoes of peat moor smoke.

Yes! If Ardbeg, then this one. You get a darn good rich and peaty Islay whisky plus sweet pine needles as the trademark aroma. All you sometimes need, to be honest. It might have lost its intensity a little over the years, but the TEN is still a no-frills-yet-affordable standard.
dissonance Expert Senior 87 22 jun 2021 11:23 am
In a rich aroma of a phenolic-smoked banana cake with tobacco. The taste is dominated by phenolic fruits and flowers with fish oil. The finish is long-lasting, smoked, with nuances of grilled meat and barbecue sauce. Ardbag's Ten is one of the benchmarks of the "base malt of the distillery", perfectly tailored and balanced, a regular in the home bar. RATING: 87pts - | 87 - 89 (B +) → Great | - Always nice to have a bottle of this.

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2024/09/16/plastic-oh-no-band-battle-of-the-beg/ N: By comparison to the contemporary bottling, this is bigger, creamier, fruitier and more rounded with a little ground pepper, though it too could also be described as flinty, floral, sweaty, salty, and citrusy as its newer sibling. Furthermore, whilst the new Ten smells no more than its stated age, this smells older. As a 2007 release, this would have been made up with ‘old’ stock, yes? Serge describes [pre-2008] 2003 Ardbeg as ‘,… some early ‘Allied’ distillate, made by the Laphroaig crew to keep the equipment fit while the distillery was virtually closed’ [WF]. T: The plastic ‘oh no’ sample bottle tainting here is less marked but still thoroughly frustrating. We plough on [not so many to go]. Definitely seems like older juice in here than the stated 10 with a narrow yet slick viscosity. I find it a little drier with more oakiness if less intense on the bitter citrus qualities in comparison to the current model. Crystalline saltiness remains a feature. I’m finding it’s the bitter peated ashy-dry oiliness that holds the key to this one’s charm. F: Bitter burnt oak and charcoal-of, ash and embers, more grilled lemon and limes, the intensity kept up for a decent length finish. C: I didn’t expect this older bottling to be better, just different, yet find this more the definitive article. That said, it has had more time [before plastic grrr] in glass to improve its course.

Straw-gold color. On the nose, sweet toffee, citrus notes, seaweed, and spice complement a powerful peat smoke infusion. In body, it is thick and oily. On the palate, a somewhat sweet maltiness up front is run over by a powerful peat smoke locomotive. Again, the whisky is enriched with citrus and pear notes, spice, and seaweed. The finish is powerful, long, and warming. The smoke lingers for minutes, if not hours.

Colour: straw - Honey, light Nose: peat is the early note. There is no way around it...but that is the signature of Ardbeg. Then a bit of vanilla, and a sense of sea-side. But also a hint of citrus + a bit of cinnamon. Taste: The heavy peat eventually makes place for the more subtle favours; cereal and bare notes appear, peppers, a bit of lime, still vanilla coming through. Also solvent, am I dreaming or is there a bit of liquorice hidden in there too? apples also linger through. Quite complex, despite its peaty signature Finish: good length, smokey with a bit of barley lingering through Bottle is characteristic for Ardbeg, green glass, tall

One of the best peat kings on Islay, 46% alcohol, super powerful bombing, People who like peat should have a common memory of drinking it. It's a pity that the taste is still not round enough, and it is slightly disturbed by the irritation of alcohol when drinking. The total taste is 86 points, and the price is reduced by 1 point, for a total of 85 points.

This whisky is the definition of medicinal peat, evoking the rough, untamed energy of a wild stallion. As one of the core expressions of the peated whisky giants, it delivers an intense and unapologetic smoky experience.

30/09/2022 85.5 / 100 Color: Dark straw, natural. AROMA - 21 / 25 We're immediately struck by the aroma of a burnt-out fire and smoldering wood, as well as the smokehouse where fruit and meat are dried. Here, we find both fresh fruit and aged wood, raisins, figs, and a hint of vanilla and salty air. The alcohol is well-hidden. TASTE - 21 / 25 Dry and smoky. Inside, you can feel mature wood and campfire heat, along with a hint of seawater. There's also a hint of wet coniferous forest, earthiness, and washed-up seaweed. FINISH - 22 / 25 Flavor-wise, it's smoky with notes of dried plums, grass, smoked mackerel, and plenty of embers that add a light spiciness. It burns evenly and slowly. BALANCE - 21.5 / 25 My first Ardbeg and a very positive surprise. I've had a bottle open for a while now, and despite its dark color, I feel like it's lost its intensity over time and simply faded. Despite this, it's become even more refined and still enjoyable.

Quote: Rating starts at 50 points not at 80.... Quite right and I respect your opinion. But it's still a whisky and thats why most people start their rating at 60 or 65 for a whisky they dislike. My criterion is 75 points. Would I buy the whisky or not (so the price is important too). This is my 'point list': 60 - 69 = bad whisky70 - 75 = it's ok, but wouldn't drink it again76 - 79 = Good whisky, would buy a bottle80 - 84 = Very good whisky85 - 89 = exceptional whisky, would buy more bottles from the same stuff90 - 94 = The angels forgot this one 95- 100 = Haven't found it yet (does it exist?)

Nice but I would expect something more "extreme". This is a very nice one but I personnaly prefer the Lagavulin 16 as Islay entry-level. But the style is not the same and I think this is the best peaty unsherried entry-level malt you can find on the market.

Nose: Peat smoke hits at first, also some ash in there, salty and a sweet and soured pickle note. With water: Citrus, green apple, vanilla. Taste: a rather clean, dry and salty arrival, again dominant on peat smoke, then also some green sour apple, biscuits, licorice, this all supported by a gentle vanilla note. In the development, red spicy pepper and the licorice turns more to fennel. Finish: Quite long, with pepper and fennel licorice sweetness.

The 3% difference to the Laga 16 is noticeable in more intensity, the range of flavors is not comparable, also, the TEN is somehow "wilder" and behind bitter and ashy.
Noface83 Connoisseur 83 14 oct 2017 11:28 am
Blind Parallel tasting of sample # 1 and sample # 2 in comparison Nose: # 1 - spicy smoke, pepper and spice cloves in campfire smoke, some lemongrass and vanilla, an overwhelming lemon sweet sweetened by spicy oak notes and smoky aromas # 2 - grassy and maritime, both the sweetness and the acidity of lemon, a pinch of salt and aromatic smoke. In addition, menthol fresh from the alcohol and a hint of caramel and vanilla. Taste: # 1 - strong spicy onset with plenty of pepper and smoke, the alcohol is now more present than in the nose, to the back then sweeter flavors (caramel, Zironensorbet) paired with warm ash. This ash note combined with some salt water and the now slightly drier sweetness accompanies you through the medium-long finish. # 2 - smoother and smoother with a hint of aromatic smoke and vanilla pudding with a splash of lemon juice, the finish being longer than # 1 adds a peppery oak and a good dose of wood with the warm smoke and maritime touch now add malty sweetness. Great taste - that's how an Islay Malt must taste. I liked the # 1 in the nose a little better with the flavor of the # 2 convince more with its power and fullness in the finish. The # 1 does have a bunch of flavors but they are not so interwoven and there was a lack of depth / substance. # 2 looks more mature and deeper, but also a bit simpler in the fullness of the aromas. But sometimes that's exactly what makes a good Islay smoker. Both are still quite young and without the smoke bonus would probably be a simple highlander for the Blend industry. Therefore, the 80+ pts are already a very good rating. Blind I give the # 1 good 80 pts . and the # 2 gets 84 pts. Both are good and fun but I would prefer # 2 when buying a bottle. Resolution (even sealed in the envelope - so just travel ^^) # 1 = Ardbeg An Oa 46.6% # 2 = Ardbeg Ten (the current Warehouse Edition) 46% Ah interesting comparison - the An Oa is definitely delicious and better than the counterparts of Laphroaig (Select) and Talisker (Skye) but also a bit more expensive than this one. Yes, it's different than the TEN (looks more like a mix of Corry and Ugi diluted down to TEN level) but as long as there are the three classics I would not see any reason to buy this whisky. But whoever bought it certainly did not do anything wrong. He is delicious. I have not had the TEN in the glass for a long time and so with a little bit of distance, you realize once again what a great drop that is and is rightly considered a classic!

When I inhale a glass of Ardbeg Ten, I always feel like I've been punched in the face. 54 ppm. Yes, it's violent, it's well-smoked peat that explodes in your face, pure peat with very few nuances, but very round. By insisting, all the complexity is revealed, we smell oil, salt, wet grass, earth, spices, caramel, blood oranges, and a hint of ginger. All in perfect balance. Alcohol competes and confuses the cards, it abuses our senses, it is not an easy drink, it is a furious and runaway horse. The rodeo continues on the palate, with all the pepper and spices pouring in, it's earthy, nicely salty, slightly caramelized, intense, with a hint of citrus on the finish, perhaps clementine. What an explosion when swallowing! We are as if immersed in the earth, the caramel and citrus fruits emerge. It's very long and oily in the mouth, the malt clings to the palate and leaves echoes of smoke. We come away feeling stunned. A blast of powerful and vegetal peat accompanied by a hint of citrus. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2020/04/ardbeg-ten-46-original-bottling-core.html

Вкус 81 Too smoky for me. Everything is covered by this kind of smoke. Endless smoke. Normally sweet with a little vanilla. Seasoning is formed when adding. But there is always smoke outside the window. I can't, sorry.

Still a favourite and imo one of the best entry level OBs out there. Aggressive peat. Leans more on the sweet than medicinal. Acidic with a nice burn on the finish that I have come to expect from recent Ardbegs. Not as oaky or off putting as I have found current Laphroaigs to be by comparison. Real BFYB depending on where one lives. Sadly overpriced here in several Canadian provinces, but still a very worthwhile dram.

Нос 86 The nose is quite delicate. In addition to the typical peat at Ardbeg, it develops around vanilla and green apple. There is a real invitation to tasting thanks to a latent sweetness (almost honeyed)
Вкус 84 The mouth is pretty round. In addition to Granny smith, touches of citrus (lemon yellow?) Blend in a beautiful harmony. Unfortunately, peat is a little dry
Финиш 82 The finish is astringent. The dryness of the first mouth is accentuated and spoil a little greed announced to the nose and partially confirmed in the mouth. Too bad, even if it remains a good quality / price ratio

I still don't really understand, do I like it or not. It has an extremely changing character. Freshly cracked open bottle and bottle with some air in it will have 2 completely different whiskies. It's pleasant and very drinkable. Very easy-going - it can be your daily sipper, but if you want to have a proper degustation it still will serve you good and you can spend some time with Ardbeg 10 to discover new taste notes. Seems that I like in the end :)

Overall, I think it's a very nice whisky. Very smooth, very clean, very easy to drink, yet intense. It clearly conveys what it wants to offer, very dominant, revolving around a strong sense of charred wood accompanied by subtle minerals, salts, and marine notes. A few very light, quiet fruity notes also try to make their presence felt. A great whisky for those who love smoke and island flavors.
нос · вкус · финиш
Нос 86 The nose reveals faint aromas of burnt rubber, storage, dampness, cellar, light pepper, seawater, lemon, and damp cloth. There's also the smell of burnt, charred, and then cooled black wood. A hint of bitter oak, a slight hint of gunpowder, and from a distance, faintly reminiscent of sweet malt, sour plum, and sour cherry.
Вкус 87 On the palate, it's smooth, full-bodied, medium-bodied, neither drying nor watery, very clean in the middle. Initially, there's a slightly smoky malt and a honey-like sweetness, with hints of sweet fruit like peach and apricot. The dominant flavors are those of charred, blackened wood and its smoke, plenty of salt, iodine, minerals, lemon, a touch of black pepper, and a hint of damp earth.
Финиш 86 The finish starts with a very brief sweetness, like peach, orange juice, or apricot. Then it quickly transforms into a charred, black wood sensation, not burning, but pure, with hints of blackness, accompanied by salt, iodine, and minerals. The mineral, salt, and iodine flavors linger for a medium to long duration, while the charred black wood sensation persists on the palate for an extended time. So, it's a medium-to-long finish.

Here in Costa Rica I have not been able to find Ardbeg of any type. But when we made a run to Panama, I was very pleased to find a Ardbeg 10 year old. Nose - BIG SMOKE smell. There is some medicine, smoked ham, green beans with bacon and mushrooms the kind mom made for the holidays. Taste - bacon, smoke, creamy vanilla, earthy, soap, medicine, fruit in the background. a slight bitterness in the back of the tongue Finish - long tingle on the tongue this is because it is 46% abv. A long bacon ham flavorPresentation - I loved the box, the history and Ardbeg even gives you a little book about their other brands. Very cool box, I kept it. I like to warm my mouth up with a lesser scotch and then I enjoy having this with a solid splash of water to cool it down a bit. When you that, more butter, apple, smoothness comes out. Strait up, it is good and reminds me sitting around a camp fire and the smoke blowing in my face. It is almost like stepping into a smoke house smoking hams and slabs of bacon. Personally, what I like doing with this is putting a table spoon or so of it in a blended scotch like JW black label, Grant's or even add some to Glenfiddich 12 which is a great mixture, that pear from the Glenfiddich and smoke from the Ardbeg. I like this a lot and have almost blown through my bottle that I got from Panama. Thank goodness we are moving there and I will be able to get more when we do. Price in Panama was $52.00 for a full liter. Not bad price.

[March, 2017]  Another Ardbeg re-taste:  When the new TEN was released I found it a very good, easy-to-drink dram (that by no means is comparable to the 10-years old guaranteed from the seventies or eighties, but nevertheless very nice in its new profile).  And I scored it with 88 points (significantly better than an average dram). Today I tried a recent bottling of the TEN and - what a disappointment:  It is rather weakish and with a drying-bitter finish.  I guess Ardbeg uses partly virgin oak casks in this recipe and these heavy tannins harm not just the balance but the mouthfeel too. This is most probably due to the problem that LVHM has difficulties in sourcing enough bourbon casks from the US.  The Scotch whisky boom came at a time when the US whisky industry was in deep recession - so the Scotch demand for used bourbon casks was and still is much higher than the US distilleries can supply. As a consequence the Scottish distilleries cut down the maturation times to use the same cask more often (and masked this by introducing NAS whiskies) AND (as this was not sufficient enough) they had to use virgin oak casks in addition.  For sure they market this as an intentional strategy, but it is pure despair in the end.  What can do you if you do not have enough good quality casks at your hands? The outcome is devastating (at least to my taste buds), but hopefully they create a new followership among all the new whisky aficionados that do not know how excellent Ardbeg and all the other great drams once tasted (before the boom)...

Slightly smoky, wet campfire, iodine. Also smell citrus fruits. Sweet in the taste, slightly peppery in the aftertaste. Remains reasonably long.

oily peat and yellow fruits!

https://whiskylovingpianist.wordpress.com/2019/01/10/bottle-polishing-random-pairs-part-2/ Traditional games proved popular on Ardbeg Day 2018. I won this [the last it turned out], bottle of Ardbeg 10yo by sliding a bung into one of the appropriate circles - left handed! Happy days. N: We start with admiration for the pungent yet tempered, vanilled sweet vegetal peated material aspect. Particulars include stewed courgettes, vanilla sponge & a curious combination of dry gherkins, sweetened swede, carrots > carrot cake >> ginger cake, pickled raisins?, hints of pickled onions, lightly sugared thick yet light smears of miso paste, nori sheets, paper, pineapple husks, dry cucumber and mild rocket,…. all deliciously moorish. T: Salad-like barley juice with a particular dry-peated vegetal development and savoury-vegetal travel all the way through. F: A long long finish directly focused around smokey bitter-vegetal peated barley > sweetcorn cobs and a touch of vanilla [that never encroaches]. C: Excellent, and still remarkably affordable. LAST DRAM N: A fabulously simple yet sublime combination of lime relish, [34’s] grilled limes , vegetal-sweet pickle, iodine-heavy welches > muscles and pickled peas & onions - vailed with thart subtly sweet nutty peatiness. T: Delivers drier than expected, pleasingly ashy-dry in fact, yet when diluted, with more salivating vegetal/seaweed and a curious miso < citrus < sooty seasoning. Serge perfectly describes it as “lapsang souchong with lime, smoked almonds, kippers, plasticine, almond oil, whelks, brine, hessian” [WF]. Is it slightly thin? A touch, but it’s not a big issue. F: Charcoaled lime juice, Polytar shampoo, boot polish and something erm,… subtle, sweet & rootsy. Concludes peated barley-faithful. C: Whilst the interstellar hype for vintage Ardbeg continues, the standard 10yo remains the bastion of standards, availability & reason. No doubt many of the [thousands of] stored bottles will improve further in their glass over the coming years/decades. Scores a B+

My rating is for the 2015 release early in the year (march) in USA. In 2012-13 it was practically undrinkable. Now it's just okay.

Нос 88 Quite delicate nose, ultimately medicinal, not at all alcoholic. Earth, ashes, gentian, a little synthol, orange peel. Impression of oily fish, oily nose, maritime. More gourmet background on dark chocolate.
Вкус 90 Superb mouthfeel, oily, oily, with a good balance of iodine / peat / medicinal notes. A little sweet but not too much. A little earth and ashes like on the nose. harmony is perfect. Traces of lemon and orange zest, bitter cocoa.
Финиш 87 Rather long, but it may be the only time the 46% feel. The whole remains warm, on peat, iodine, medicinal plants, a little drier and more earthy than the rest.

As for the "monster" from Islay it's not that bad. Laphroaig is stronger when it comes to smoke, but Ardbeg Ten is more fruity and sweet, and the smoke doesn't overwhelm other aromas and flavors. The fruit and campfire smoke complement each other nicely. In its price range it's one of the better peated options.

Нос 85 Refreshing. Peat and fruit. Campfire peat. Raking ash. Burning charcoal. Also fruit: apples, pear, citrus, peach. Vanilla. Caramel. Toffee. Saltiness also appears. Sea salt.
Вкус 87 Here, at the beginning, fruits. More citrus: lemon peel, pineapple. Apple. Pear. After a while, peat appears: the smell of a campfire, ash, soot. Apple and pear roasted over a campfire. Vanilla. Caramel. Toffee. More pronounced marine notes. A bit of pepper.
Финиш 85 Here, peat plays the biggest role. Warm, campfire, warming. Somewhere in the background, fruits, but as if dried, smoked. More spices than on the tongue. Vanilla, caramel disappear. Even more marine notes appear.

N: On the nose, the 10yo certainly has all the Ardbeg idiosyncrasies going, medical bandages mixed with mild dairy peat, bath soap products, soft citrus fruits as well as pineapples/bananas combined and icing on the top of carrot cake sweetness. Its very clean but its like theres no layers, nothing to peel back and discover. Having tasted a few older Ardbeg’s of late i’m craving more maturation - 16 years would be smashing, to give it that depth of field. The nose, though delightful could do with some more oak complexity to rival the more simple spirit. T: Opening with prickly ground pepper, theres lots of astringent/youthful spirit>oak accompanied by salt then chilli spice and obviously peat. The result of this youthfulness is a fairly austere one. Its also creamy and nutty [pecans, then pumpkin seeds, then hazelnuts], oily [maybe all those nut oils], and like sewing machine oil mixed with a very light, mass produced olive oil. F: Whilst the salt dies down, what emerges is an ethanol freshness and a green grass oakiness. its a rather juvenile finish in keeping with whats already gone with touches of chocolate, aniseed, burdock, [later dandelion] and ash. Very savoury this one, not much sweetness here. Definitely savoury and drying. Yes, theres smoke but its just smoke, its clean but theres no complexity, no mystery, no inspiration. Quick finish C: The presentation of the 10yo is generally excellent, tasty, glossy and impressive [at least in part], but Im very disappointed by this batch - its extremely lacking and comes across as a wafer thin veneer of its former self. Could this lack of content and astringency be due, not as a result of inactive casks but the result of oak trees and casks that have been rushed in growth, seasoning and/or production? I hope this isn’t a long term trend. Scores a C+

It hans't changed much from the earlier versions. maybe a little less complex. other than that it still has those cold, lemon infused, overly sugared stale tea notes, with lots of salt and dirty sea water. i miss one thing though, and thats those amazing turkish delight notes that i noticed in earlier versions. still, this is easily among the top 5 of all entry level bottlings, certainly the best entry lvl OB when it comes to peated whiskies. 87/100

A basic entry very acceptable, with peat and yellow fruits acid (lemon), plus a side pastry subtle! The peat "gives" the voice in the mouth, in a strong but monolithic way, markedly, and the spices come then. The retro-olfaction remains medium to long with a spicy peaty return very present!

25/03/2015. This release is a VAST improvement over the 2013 disasters of the Ten. So sad then, but so much better now! Nose is a bit young, but not as young as the Dark Cove which has a stone ground agave tequila scent. This has a slight tequila scent, but not as bad (no, I do not prefer that scent in single malts that are supposed to be ten or more years old. In a younger one, sure, like a Bunna perhaps, which I just drained at cask strength from Berrys'). The palate is a bit flat on this one, but still very good. A gentle loving Ardbeg that one can really settle down with and read a book. The kind of Ardbeg to enjoy with other activities, rather than trying to focus on it as the main event.

Нос 88 The nose first gives a huge boost of peat, but not in an overwhelming way so that you are blown off your socks. After some time it gives a nice balance between the peat and sweeter keys. Citrus and vanilla are accompanied by peat. We also smell freshly cut wood and the moss in the forest.
Вкус 87 smoky, peat, vanilla, not really medicinal citrus, lime
Финиш 88 dry and reasonably long, peat in balance with sweet notes, salted caramel Actually also a good, soft campfire in terms of finish ...

Nose: Peat, alcohol, and some underlying sweetness. Thick, and oily. After it sits, some sulphur, oil, mint notes and a good deal of pepper. Taste: Smoke, oil, burn, its like getting a mouth full of a campfire. Adding water cools the alcohol to a nice pepper and allows the sweetness to come through. Finish: short, with a burn and lingering smoke while exhaling,
