http://www.weinkenner.de/2016/lagavulin-2016-200th-anniversary-12yo-special-release-vs-jazz-festival-nas-41085/ Color: white wine Nose: spicy-salty lemon, cayenne pepper, lime, vanilla, caramel, honey, maritime and smoky. First fresh and more green. This malt needs time to breathe - it gets better and better. Apples, wax, hemp rope, old ship's rope, seaweed and a pinch of iodine. Taste: Round, balanced and bursting with mighty power. Straightforward, yet harmoniously spicy - just great! The sweetness of honey goes hand in hand with caramel (no sugar), salt, pepper, iodine, seaweed, lemon and peat, as well as smoked ham, lime, leather, vanilla, charcoal and ashes - all from a young Lagavulin from the Bourbon Cask expected. Finish: Extremely long and with the same flavors as the taste fades away. Wet ash, charcoal and caramel remain on the tongue, accompanied by copious quantities of phenolic peat. Note: For us the best 12yo of the special release series! Finally a straightforward, straightforward Lagavulin without much pettiness - class! 91 points (nose: 89 / taste: 92 / finish: 91)

https://www.whiskynotes.be/2017/lagavulin/lagavulin-12-years-2017/ Nose: sweet, deeply sooty, with lots of medicinal notes, coastal notes, shells on a beach, putty and earthy notes. As expected. Some gherkins, but there’s a gentler side too, something of butter pastry, almond cream and lemon oil. Sharp and powerful, but somehow very balanced. Mouth: same intensity. Big peat with pepper and lemon. Smoked fish, leathery notes, ashes, wax and salted caramel. Medicinal and very coastal. Just a few fruity notes in the background. Big, big sooty notes. Finish: very long, ashy, lemony. Perfect sharpness.Pretty much a benchmark for this medicinal, robust, hugely sooty style. I often had problems with its fierceness and dryness but for me this is slightly sweeter, more balanced and the most enjoyable batch I’ve had. Recommended.

This is similarly excellent to the 2015 release. Subtle differences, but it’s by and large the same expression. It makes sense why this is the only Diageo special release that has been the same every year, there’s just no reason to play around with it.

Almonds and satsumas on the nose with wet earth, maple cured bacon, white chocolate, liquorice and lavender smoke. Soft and oily peat on the palate with shortbread, candied ginger and coconut. Herbal and ginger spice on the finish with smoky black tea, saline peat, bitter dark chocolate and vanilla cream. The most elegant of peat blasts one could hope for, certainly at that age.

Nose: The first feeling is that it is very balanced, between the characteristics of Laga, the aroma brought by fruit and oak. But being a little shy, it's also worth mentioning that it has a very bright acidity, which gives it a lot of energy in terms of replenishment. Specific flavors: ink, western medicine, plum, Bollinger, yellow lemon juice, mint, butter (sparkle) and powder flavor provide support for the whole (more butter cookies, vanilla cookies and other flavors after a sip). Variation and complexity are actually worthy of a higher score. In the end, the feeling of alcohol is suppressed very well. (The bottom of the cup even has a lot of smell after adding water) Drink: very tasty, more expressive than smelling, a wonderful fusion of fruit and peat, swirling, rising. The peat is comfortable and not sharp, the fruit is soft and sweet, and it is more expressed as tropical fruit, white chocolate, ginseng, and a hint of bitterness. Overall: This time, compared with SR2021, which also has a WF92 score, this wine is more gentle and more balanced. The disadvantage is that the smell is not confident enough, and the buttery style is worth mentioning again.
Strong, peaty, young Lag. Nice balance of sweetness and peatiness

An even sweeter cask influence than the 2015 edition, but a bit dirtier spirit.
Feels best neat, given some time (20-30min) to settle in the glass before drinking. Re-evaluated to 89pts compared to Lagavulin 8 (86), Lg5 (87) and Lg6 (88).

+ H2O: rounder - sweeter Very nice representative of the Lagavulin 12 yo series 27.03.2017 84
The better stuff for a good price.
the usual big huge laga: nose: peat, brackish water, eucalyptus honey, citrus taste: sweeter than the other 12 yo, an initial honey side, vanilla , a great oily note and also here citrus honey, cedar, malt, and then the peat and the islay salt on the finish final:oily, vanilla, peat, brackish water and sulfurous flavor typical of the distillery with water : the sour and peaty side is more accentuated than the initial sweetness to conclude, a giant..the quality standard of this distillery is extraordinarily high, we can safely say that Lagavulin represents the Mercedes of Whisky. The usual big huge Laga ..

I'm not sure I'm the biggest fan of these nuclear-powered 12yo Mad Max type 'vulins. Lagavulin really needs sherry to balance it out. That said, it's still a great and characterful whisky.

Very strong. Medicinal and not just iodine. It has the whole operating room going on. It has a very sterile smell. There are some deeper notes that are really nice - charcoal, smoked fish, forest floor. It is definitely Lagavulin. Adding water gives it more of a floral aroma. Also, I can't help but note freshly opened soft plastic fishing lures. It's definitely there. |

Zowie. It is pure power. The phenol is so pungent there is an initial sense of Tobasco sauce. That's quickly followed by iodine, camphor, soil, swamp. It really exudes an ancient character. There's also a barbecue sauce. I have only ever gotten barbecue sauce from Lagavulin. Water again makes it more plastic like. Water is really not doing any good here. Best to take micro sips from the real deal. |

Iodine again. Vasoline. The barbecue sauce has transitioned to more of a sour Caroline style. Water enhances this Southern feel. BBQ burnt ends with shrimp grits and succotash. That about sums it up. This apparently is the Southern style Laga. |

Tasted head-to-head with the Ledaig 2008 Archives. Thanks Sebastiaan!
This one was, for better or worse, a good deal more refined than last year’s release. I really liked the in-your-face complexity and brutishness of the 12 year old from last year, but I can’t really fault it as it was quite rich and flavourful and a fine whisky in its right. Reviewed in my blog: https://iwriteaboutstuffilike.com/2016/12/15/lagavulin-12-2016-release/

Smoke complex fresh Islay whisky. The 200th anniversary version is steady as most 12 year old original bottlings from Lagavulin. But in my opinion you get an extra Islay Lagavulin touch concerning the deep Lagavulin profile. This version is also very flattering around the nose. Lagavulin did a great job on this expression. Concerning price/performance ratio: 8/10
Really good, honest whisky. No wood trickery, just simple, naked and raw, but mature.
Absolute must for Islay lovers
Simpler 16-years in both aroma and taste / finish, nevertheless there is here both depth and complexity, the fortress, of course, adds points, gives power and pressure, but I prefer the calm and full of nuances and semitones of the 16-year-old ( at least the one that was produced 3-5 years ago).
Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
On the nose, it stings, then after a few moments, the "freshness" of the fine peat, the vanilla, the very fresh lemon too, and a dry woody return appears!
[January, 2017] Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 94 Euro in November, 2016. In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 90. My notes state a clean and flawless Lagavulin (as usual).
Or the mood was good or ..., but for this money a masterpiece. Lagavulin in the most brutal performance. SALT!!! Spices, chili, cinnamon, coriander. If not for some dip in the fragrance, one might call a standard.
Always a treat. Simple but very well made and with great depth and complexity.

Colour: Bright amber Nose: As usual direct, strong peat scents, smoldering smoke and crystal clear purity; Slowly, a cornucopia of sweet and fresh fruity nuances and pastry notes develops. Towards the end there are still notes of eucalyptus and smoked ham. One to two drops of water make it even more lively, sweeter and spicier. Palate: Light and silky soft body, surprisingly gentle and chocolate sweet, with a pinch of salt, fresh coolness and white bread baked over campfire smoke. Water makes it a bit more restrained, still cool and oily in the mouth, the toasted nuances are slowly coming to the fore. echo: Extremely long and multi-faceted farewell, initially soft with increasing pepper sharpness and noticeable smoke, towards the end still a little appetizing bitterness.

[May, 2017] I had this dram during the Manager's Masterclass tasting at Feis Ile. These cask strength editions usually are very carefully selected casks that represent Lagavulin at its best (and at its best maturation age to me, that is 12 years). As a lot of members already did excellent review and tasting notes I skip this standard description here. I like this dram best with some drops of water added that increase both its sweetness and its smokey/peaty flavours. It takes out some of the slightly bitter/adstringent feelings of the neat dram too. A great dram and another excellent annual edition of 12 year old Lagavulin...

At this age, Lagas have retained some of their wildness, but have also developed an advanced degree of maturity; the cask strength does the rest and this combination really warmed me up. The punch is uncompromising, but only moderately exciting in the long run.

Lovely stuff, though I had expected a bit more power. Still, it’s truly wonderful, and I’d happily buy a bottle!
Lagavulin 12 yo 'Special Release 2016' (57.7%, OB) Probably a very large batch. Lagavulin 12 is a kind of Porsche 911 of whisky, everyone loves it, for good reasons. Yes, fast and reliable. It’s to be noted that this baby is another one that celebrates the distillery’s 200th anniversary. Colour: white wine, so refill wood. No complains. Nose: I think it’s even simpler than its predecessors, but that simplicity is exactly what we’re looking for here. Bauhaus whisky? Peat smoke, tar and burnt rubber, sea spray, artichokes, and Islay mud. With water: exceptionally almondy and waxy, with a perfect tar. Mouth (neat): elementary, straight, direct, uncomplicated, and perfect. Bacon, smoked fish, bitter oranges, thyme tea, bitter almonds. I find it seriously drier than last year’s SR, but I haven’t got that one in my hands just now, so please forget about these aimless ramblings. Now, the peat is huge. With water: lemons! Finish: very long. How did you like this cigar that you just chewed? Comments: I don’t know, in a way, this baby’s akin to some young Port Ellens that we could try in the past, even if there isn’t any feeling of brown coal this time. Do they have a secret programme? Recreating PE at Lagavulin? And it’s integrally distillate-driven and mature. My preferred way and style. One of the must buys of the year, together with that perfect Kilkerran 12, remember? SGP:367 - 92 points.

Ordentliche Kracher, also different / idiosyncratic enough to justify the individual releases. When it was still around the 50 ¬, that was a welcome addition to the quite narrow standard range, for today's 80-100 € Diageo can nail the neatly groomed knee.

Instantly an invasive nose with a mixture of ink, bark, pine resin with a sweet, fruit-ish undercurrent. It gets slightly sweeter after a while with some roasted marshmallows. I find it slightly less focussed than the 13th release we had on our table before, but it is also more complex. What is particularly present is something smoky and fruity, which I can only described as smoked peach skin. There is also something of a chemical solvent, I cannot determine which exactly, and lots of farm-y notes, like stables and silage. The peat remains sweet with added touches of mint. After adding a few drops of water it becomes softer, with an additional scent of a wood fire in a chemical lab (strictly not allowed, mind you) and peach liquor. |
| Вкус |
87 |
The palate is very potent with (as on the nose) lots of ink, supplemented with coal dust, bonfire smoke, and again that slightly chemical solvent thing. Rather drying with lots of pungent ashes, and very much focused, as we become to expect now from this series. A few drops of water add rounder side to it, with an even better balance. Still very focussed on peach skin, smoke, ashes, tar, ink and a few peculiar notes of plastic toys or perhaps Tupperware, which are certainly not unpleasant within the whole array of tastes. In addition, a hint of rubber appears and almonds. |

Thick and masculine strength dominant, exhaust fume with notably charm and interesting lemony notes lurking, however it tends to flat out rather quickly and left with ashy smokes. P- Explosion of concentrated sweet and sour fruits, followed by aggressively dry and bitter notes, muddy, direct and spicy. What the f ** k, that's the Burner! This whisky is the best Islay whisky I've ever had. There are a couple of Port Ellens that I could rehearse, some of which were equally good. But not better. And a direct comparison with festival whiskys from Lagavulin also showed that this CS 12 yo was better, sometimes equally good. But never worse. Wonderful. Rare 98 points I want to forgive here!

http://kaypingers-whiskyblog.de/frontend/fullarticle.php?id=231 Color: white wine Nose: spicy-salty lemon, cayenne pepper, lime, vanilla, caramel, honey, maritime and smoky. The honey sweetness goes with caramel (no sugar), plus salt, pepper, iodine, seaweed, lemon, and peat, as well as smoked ham, lime, leather, vanilla, charcoal and ashes - everything you would expect from a young Lagavulin from the Bourbon Cask expected. Finish: Extremely long and with the same flavors as the taste fades away. Wet ash, charcoal and caramel remain on the tongue, accompanied by copious amounts of phenolic peat. Note: For us, the best 12yo of the Special Release Series! Finally, a direct, straight-line Lagavulin without much pettiness - CLASS! 91 points N: 89P / G: 92P / F: 91P
N Rich, fleshy. Ham, smoke, charcoal delicacies, barbecue sauce, sea salt, wet wood, lime peel, bacon, bandages. IN Sweet, powerful, rich and complex. Very solid. Wood smoke, baked apples, pungency of ginger. It becomes sweeter with water. You can just eat this whisky)
- a great combination of smoke and sweetness - very good to drink pure despite the 57.7% - Compared to its successor in 2017, it looks more complex, rounder and more balanced - different from the classic Lagavulin 16 years, but not worse

Mittelang. Slightly dry with decent tannins, cinnamon and orange. |
Only had this one once, I admit, but when I did it not only appeared to me but also a buddy of mine a bit rough around the edges compared to a few other 12 cs. Not talking about us having a problem with straight up power and austere blade-y-ness (we love the 2015 for this very reason), but just a bit unfocused. Maybe it needed some more air and time?
