Great thing

This was my first peat/px whisky and I bought a second bottle after finishing the first. Really delicious.

Damp cloth, wet leaves, barley sugar, rich dark fruits, ripe yellow fruits, raisins, pepper, gingerbread, herbs, mixed salted nuts, chocolate, tobacco smoke, earth. Slightly industrial. A fantastic, decadent whisky. Actually reminds me of cask strength Benromach. It also gets better with time. The last third of the bottle was absolutely sublime.

In the glass, the eight-year-old bottling of Glen Scotia for this year's Campbeltown Malts Festival 2022, strong 56.5% vol. cask strength, not chill-filtered and with a natural amber colour. Rather narrow windows appear in the glass. A real surprise and an absolutely successful malt. If Glen Scotia continues to excite, the scarcity of delicious Campbeltown malts is slowly coming to an end. Bravo!

A very good young Grandi that stretches the boundaries of low vintage products. Peat PX barrel over barrel? I'm curious where did this barrel come from? The peat line at Loch Roman? Or the barrels of some Islay distillery? After tasting the special editions of the Campbelltown Carnival in recent years, you will really expect more from this winery. Instead of blindly pursuing the vintage, in the context of young wines, experimental products are more able to impress younger and younger consumers. In fact, young wines are good ~ everyone's psychological expectations will not be so high, but there will be more surprises and emotions~~

From a sample, having sat out (oxidized) for ~2 hours: Fresh chewy gingerbread, a smidge of blue cheese (more prevalent in the nose), wet rocks (minerally), wet cinnamon sticks, malt, and slightly pre-chewed peppermint gum. This is a very approachable, tasty, Christmas-y dram. Ugh, I want a bottle...

I think you shouldn't expect too much from an 8-year-old whisky in this batch size. Except for the finish, though, this is actually pretty good. The price is okay, too. Petay Glen Scotia? Not my cup of coffee...

Smoky notes slip through, overall a decent specimen. It's a pity that the sample is over.

Blind sample courtesy of a friend. Initially my guess was towards Islay. Laphroaig to be more precise. It's a tad bit more sharper and maltier with maybe more minerality than what I think Laphroaig to be, but this would (and did for me) fool people for an ileach. As stated, a bit too sharp and brash to reward higher score, and even at 88pts I think it's closer to 87 than 89. It still has good complexity and nicely plated malt and the wood that doesn't interfere.

A great Scotia with the distillery's profile. I recognize that funk of a ship's engine room with marine diesel. The smoke isn't overly present. The PX influence is subtle but complements the whisky wonderfully. The best festival bottling for me.

That's a very strong performance! Salt and peat determine the character from the nosing to the finish. Very complex on the palate, lots of fruit, some spices and a subtle hint of herbs, definitely strawberries too. Clear, solid structure, always stringent and without breaks in the overall picture. Very remarkable for this age. Congratulations to Glen Scotia for that!

First dram from the bottle. It is actually too early to write anything about it and certainly to give an opinion in figures. But given this nose ..... Already at the first nose this looks familiar. Where have I smelled this before. And after a few minutes of more smells it comes to me....Brora 30 years old ob. The stable air, the farm and it also somewhat lactic acid, then fruit comes along with some smoke. Which is/was very typical for Brora. I hope the nose stays this nice throughout the whole bottle. Super fantastic nose especially considering the 8 years. In the mouth unfortunately not the enormous complexity that the Brora has, but I did not expect that either. It certainly has the features of the Brora. Nicely fruity and suddenly there is also the peat that becomes stronger in the aftertaste and lingers with some sweetness. Poormen's Brora I say .... and not no to it. This calls for more!

Nose: cape raisins, mesquite, fried almonds, allspice, salt baked beetroot, dark chocolate, ground almonds and cocoa powder, coconut husk and oatmilk, quinoa, vanilla and lemon zest, grape laffy taffy and crystallised violets Palate: dark chocolate, prunes, coffee and squashed raisins Finish: very juicy, vine fruits, scorched almonds and a gentle heat With water Nose: cinnamon balls, plum duff and eccles cakes, mastiha and gum arabic, marunchinos, bergamot and looseleaf tobacco, chokeberries and seaspray Palate: bitter and hotter, camp coffee and blackcurrant liquorice, fisherman's friend and unsulphered apricots Finish: blackcurrant leaf, chervil, parma violets, raisin juice and soft liquorice, treacle and alpine strawberries

Appearance: Dark gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up slowly to form small beads which falls as slow thin oily legs. Nose: Huge salinity to start with - salt and seaweed notes. There's some toffee, tropical fruit and a little citrus. Little in the way of smoke - it's very faint. After a few sips of the liquid, the smoke comes through more on the nose - interesting. Palate: Thick syrupy arrival - loads of chewy salted caramel and dried fruit: sultanas, raisins, figs, dates etc. There's some berries hints here too - blueberry jam? The liquid is very oily, coating the mouth with sweet brown sugar and a little honey. More tropical fruit notes appear, a little dark chocolate and some liquorice before the smoke comes in - not as thick as I'd expected for a mainly heavily peated liquid. There's a big bite of peppery spice, more salinity and a dryness as the liquid disappears. YUMMY! Finish: Lingering sweetness, gentle smoke, drying salinity and peppery spice. Overall: As I said at the beginning I'm a Fanboy so you can make your own mind up, this is my first but won't be my last bottle! Maybe the biggest surprise for me is the peat smoke - I was expecting more, it's faint on the nose, comes through on the palate and lingers on the finish, but it's the Glen Scotia DNA salinity which features most strongly in this dram. Michael and his team have taken what Iain and his team have distilled and matured in ex-bourbon in Campbeltown and re-casked it into PX casks in Alexandria (I assume). The finish hasn't taken over like I think happened with the 2020 Sherry Double Seasonal Release. The salinity, tropical fruit, smoke and PX seem in perfect balance. Nose An ordinary sense of alcohol after leaving it alone for 15 minutes, a strong touch of malt comes first along with a smooth sense of sherry. You can almost “smell” the oiliness, followed by salty toffee, a bit sour of tropical fruits and berries, and a slight hint of peat. A stronger feeling of orchard and smoke after adding a little bit of water. Palate Undoubtedly oily, a bit salty, and the sense of smoke suddenly shows in the mouth along with smooth peat, also chocolate, and dried fruits. Also peatier after adding some water Finish Long; The sense of peat still exists long after, along with some senses of toffee and salt.

Young dram, worth a try

Probably their best festival release yet. Here PX worked just as well as it works in Ledaig! I'm amazed! 22 22 22 22

The more you drink it, the tastier it is :) It is strong, alcohol is present, but only in some "manly" way. It will punch you, but it is not sniffing knockout. N: dark fruit, light peat, spice, alcohol T: fruity, dark fruit, plums, lemony, salty, light peat, salty caramel, spice, ginger. Overall, young but veery nice.

The aroma is surprisingly smoked, reminiscent of mackerel. Pleasant aroma! Peat, notes of aging and light dampness, sherry notes. The taste is enveloping, capturing all the receptors, smoke, ginger, pungent spices. Feels smoky. The aftertaste of aged sherry is more fruity than sweet.

COLOR: Gold - a young but really good single malt - for 80€ a very good quality whisky in cask strength

Nose: A bold, youthful peat presence with a sharp acidity, reminiscent of white wine vinegar. There’s a hint of sourdough dough, with a noticeable youthful alcohol sharpness in the background. Palate: The entry feels thin, with the alcohol and peat rapidly rising to the roof of the mouth. It brings notes of heather flowers, sweet white grapes, and a fleeting alcohol sensation. As it settles, a bitter base and a trace of charred wood linger on the palate.

In lieu of a long winded appraisal (it will arrive) it has to be said that this is an absolute blockbuster of a dram. Thick, extremely viscous and oily are the immediate take-ways but to that add extremely densely packed with fully formed flavours but also amazingly balanced. Symphonic, if not bombastic whisky. This is a stone cold classic. And it delivers all of this at 8 years old and for £55. Staggeringly good. ————————————————- The long winded review… Very special and common as muck. Perfect. Over the last few years I’ve started falling out of love with certain aspects of the whisky world. The endless ‘limited editions’ and ‘special’ bottles wear you down and the latest foray into #NFT nonsense by Ardbeg is the cherry on the top. It feels like it’s becoming less about the whisky and more about generating insane levels of FOMO, posting your Unicorn bottle to your ‘gram’ for those precious, precious ’likes’, talking about your whisky room more than your friends and boasting about your latest 'Springer' you snagged by waiting in line from 4am. I can’t be arsed. It’s not what I came here for. I came here to drink whisky. Those bottles that let you get on with this happy hobby are magical. Even more so when they are ‘limited edition’ but released in a number that means everyone can get a bottle or two (24,000) and at a price nearly everyone can afford (£55 including delivery from the distillery), at cask strength, no colour, no filtering and in a simple cardboard box. (And if you bought from the distillery, a hand signed note saying who packed it on a thank you card). Magical, no? My first Glen Scotia. Like a recent Ben Nevis, I’d never really given this distillery much thought, but the spec tickled me - I like’m young (8yo), I prefer mainland peat (check) and I love a PX finish. Seemed like a good bet. Off we go… On the nose I’m up to my knees on the farm. Admittedly one that has seen a recent fire in the manure pile. Smokey rural peat, manure, smoked impregnated oak and smouldering wood beams, some chocolate (only a wee bit, a nibble) and what is this? Jam? yes, Jam smeared on an old leather belt? Weird smells but it’s there. Some sort of fruity jam and salty at the same time - I’m not selling this am I? Salty jam anyone? The peat and ash and richness remind me of Ardmore. But a bit rougher round the edges but not in a bd way, there’s a nice black pepper note in there which mixes really well with the ashy notes. This stuff smells marvellous. A slight mature cheese note? Some nice rich un-rubbed pipe tobacco - in a Dartington glass you can really get your nose in the smell on this one. Like Ardmore I’m getting a creamy mint thing in there. Have I said this is good? There’s a nice feint gingerbread thing going on, too with a sourness, like stale sweat and then some preserved smoked strawberries? A lot to love here and nothing to hate and every time I whack my beak back into the glass it’s shifted a little to reveal something else. In the mouth. And the arrival is big, loud, turned up to 11. This is not subtle whisky. You can taste the youth but it’s good youth, it’s energetic and spiky, not hot and bland. It’s thick too, the first second or two in the mouth and it’s peaty richness and viscosity and biscuity malty heart arrive all wrapped up in a PX overcoat. And then the flavours really ramp up as it attacks the palate. Lordy! Big flavours explode rather than unfold. Mmmmmmsherry, sweet peat, silage, smoked strawberries? Salty toffee, gingerbread, hot and peppery but not is a bad way, it just lifts the experiment. Like greasy horseradish with some rib of beef. That heat, that zing take it from being pretty nice to OMG! The richness is pretty spectacular for such a young whisky with a short PX finish, I’d have guessed at at least a few years in PX - not so. This tastes like something you’d happily consume when you’re outside in the worst of weather, when the world around you is going to Hell. This would pick you right up, give you a slap and then you’d be back in the game. This is the whisky you drink before you kill Jaws, blow up a Death Star or chuck that damned ring into that volcano. It’s stirring stuff. Inspiring even. It romps like a giddy wet Labrador in a pond. Such heady, youthful exuberance. Winner. And the finish, well, it’s big and biscuity and rich peat and there’s heat and oak. There’s sherry, old cocoa powder and baking spices and ashy, smoky hearths and heather smoke and, mmmm. Good. Let’s just be happy with that. So, first Glen Scotia and I feel my chi has been realigned, my whisky downers dismissed and my faith in limited editions done right, restored. This is a great bottle (for me) for so many reasons but the best is that this is great whisky that anyone can buy and enjoy. 21 20 20 20 81 pretty nice nose, but then everything is prosaic - young, flat, dry, not tasty, hmm, and why did you need a finish? peat barrel played a cruel joke and the experiment failed, IMHO. In general, I did not understand this whisky, it was not at all the kind of whisky I expected from the festival release, sadly...

...a super intense, fruity, salty, smoky 8-year-old that is absolutely worthy of being a festival bottling. You can drink it neat, but I find it much more expressive when slightly diluted... [Color]: = Gold;

Aroma: Sulfur, Vanilla, Dried Fruit, Smokey. It is difficult to pierce the nose deeply, but it feels good because the three things are in harmony. Taste: Smokey, sour flesh. Feet stand out from the palette rather than the scent. Finish: Pete's medium finish Overall Review: Whisky with a simple aroma and taste, but quite complete. The climax where Pete, who was a supporting actor in the fragrance, plays the lead in the palette. However, it is a pity that the sherry scent felt in the nose lacks continuity afterwards.

I just didn't enjoy this one with the palate being particularly muggy and cumbersome.

A very decent and well-made whisky for such a young vintage. Lots of smoke, slightly sour strawberry fruit. Pleasant, sweet, smoky warmth in the finish, with a slightly biting tongue and mineral aftertaste

blind tasting Starts slightly smoky on the nose. However, the smoke then builds up more and more. Very unusual smoke flavors. A mix of Islay and stinky Ledaig. I can't really classify right now. A decent sherry note behind it. Subtly sulphurous. Brutally sweet in the mouth. From beginning to. Like licking a piece of sugar. Crazy. The smoke is now much stronger than in the nose. Clearly sherry. Everything speaks for PX. Mega sweet. Alcohol clearly perceptible, but he also needs it. tasty. It has such a honey BBQ note. Long finish. warm smoke. Bacon. Light oak note. No complexity monster. But super tasty. warming. Nice smoke. sweet papa Almost going in the liqueur direction. But without the PX(?) barrel it would stink quite a bit. But this is a really great combo with the slightly stinky smoke. Like.

Drinks considerably older, though it has a (non offensive) sharp edge. N: some dry-board up front, Lemon, kippers, Cooked Bacon, driedfruits - 90 T: Salty, charred wood, becomes ashy smok-y, turns spicy into dried fruits - 90 F: Dried fruit lingers, some orange, and nuttiness shows up. - 89

Dark fruits, toffee, orange, spices, smoke, iodine, not very complex but pleasant enough

N.: Leather and dried fruit, sultana, sandalwood and cold wet burnt grass, later caramel and marmalade. And the whiff from the sea is fully there. P.: Strong entrance, fruit and smoke wonderfully combined and balanced, with water more fruit. Very seasoned and rich, especially for an 8yo. F.: quite long and busy, mingling between spices, fruit, smoke and sea salt. What a dram! Very hard to top, I can hardly expect more from a whisky...

Glen Scotia at its best! Significantly better than last year's edition.

Great thing, much better than the 10 Bordeaux from last year. Not overly complex but very drinkable. 8/10 - Great. Good buy for the RRP.

Odour: fermented apple, vanilla base, note of heavy oil, including German Strawberry note, sweetish smoke lies above everything else, alcohol is very well integrated on the nose, according to the smoked bacon note, the wood is quite present despite the young age Flavor: medium to full-bodied, full-bodied, sweetish undertone, alcohol pushes you on warming, medium-flavoured. until long aftertaste, becoming increasingly spicy ... Colour: lightening copper tone, narrow to medium water rim, clear Conclusion: I like Glen Scotia better with smoke than without, and this one is unexpectedly viscous and dense for its 8 years - the young age has been perfectly "wrapped" by the smoke ...

I just didn't like this whisky... It had something bad like fehlfarben in the mouth... May be some bad Sherry Butts... Or may be the bottle was bad but this is definitely nowhere close to 90. I have it on 84 And even lower if you take into account the price. But looks like you sell everything these days from a PX cask. Check out the 2010 vintage 3 instead. Much much better. For less money as well

The PX note in the nose and mouth is a pleasure.

Glen Scotia festival 2022 8 yo PX Nose: sweet, alcoholic, red and dark fruits in syrup or spirit, cocoa, coffee beans, dust, dirty cellar, orange jam, smoked plums, extremely salty, salty caramel. Palate: delicate smoke and peat, sweet red fruit, tobacco and leather, cinnamon and a bit of dark chocolate, blood orange, dry plum, pepper or ginger, light salty sea breeze. Young and wild. A little water does this dram good. Perhaps this whisky could have spent a little more time in the cask to smooth out any unnecessary edges.

Without a doubt, the best Glen Scotia I've ever drunk, perhaps the only whisky of the producer that saves my otherwise very negative attitude towards this brand. Distinctly peaty with a PX finish, these are two things I love in whisky. After several tastings, still the best Glen Scotia and the only one I like with all my heart.

Whiteout water it’s one dimensional and to hot. I even forgot about the bottle… With water you get some great balance in the peat en sweetness. Becomes more tropical and is really enjoyable.

Quite sharp and the PX finish comes across as being a bit forced and random. It adds something which I don't associate with sherry at all. I would have probably liked this a lot more if it was just matured on those bourbon barrels for a few more years. Edit 26-12-2025: tasted this again in a flight of peated whiskies from all over Scotland and it came in dead last. Apart from the quite acceptable nose it's just not a very well balanced dram.

A smoky strawberry whisky, sweet, powerful and elegant. What more do you want?! I was a bit skeptical at first because of the relatively young age and the (in relation to that) not lower price. But I think that in the end it was definitely bottled at a suitable point in time, without the youthfulness bothering me. All in all, really well done - convinced me! I am also pleased that something very unique has been created here compared to the 2021 Festival bottle - I have just tasted both bottlings one after the other - and they are truly hardly comparable.

I've now given myself more than half the bottle time to write my notes, assuming that time and oxygen might still benefit him. But it sticks to my first impression after the first dram: quite ok, but not a big hit, the smoke only there to hide the youth (which doesn't work).

Im confused, cause in this case, I have the impression that all the work is saved by the sweetness of px. On the one hand, we have a very pleasant smoked bacon with a large dose of sweetness, and on the other hand, the bitterness of the over-barreled distillate, where there is too much oak tannin. This could be a really good whisky, but it's just average...

Glen Scotia can be either hit or miss, it's a game of roulette in my experience. Now, peated Glen Scotia with a PX finish? I've read some raving reviews and wanted to see what it's all about. .. Mostly hype to be honest. Off balance, too young, definitely tasty here and there but mostly a weird experiment. I'm not doing that many tasting notes anymore but here's an impression: It's like eating a strawberry marmalade-smothered steak and downing it with a Belgian quadruple that had a little accident with a salt shaker. A weird experiment as I said earlier.. The peat smoke is a chemical/medicinal kind I just don't vibe with unfortunately. Fun to have, but I'm really baffled about the high ratings.

When I first opened it, I felt that the fit was much stronger than I thought than normal Cambenton whisky. After a few weeks of drinking, Pete felt calmer. Very sweet, peaty flavor + tropical fruit flavor + perfume, etc. It's a pretty good whisky

Peated PX Finish -> all clear. Basically smells good, tastes modest. The nose reveals little about youth. Light smoke.. good start. The taste is unfortunately sour, sharp with alcohol, youthful. A pity! The nose promised much more than was delivered. Water helps, takes the edge off, but only makes it slightly better. +1-2 points with water

This doesn’t have the balance or age that I’d like. And tannic. 75/100. I’ll pass on this. It’s not good.

I once tasted this malt from a freshly opened bottle, and it was very alcoholic and green to me. But now a friend has adjusted a sample from a permanent bottle, and the difference is obvious. In the aromatics - sweet creamy cream and grilled fruits, currants, farm funk. Very sweet, and somewhat straightforward. The smoke is nicely integrated. The taste has grilled lemons, maltiness, ash, dark fruits. With water - unfortunately, greenness returns.

Another nice bottling from Glen Scotia. But you can tell that there just isn't enough aging on the palate. The lack of age has a somewhat negative effect.

At the Campbeltown Malts Festival 2022, Glen Scotia is bringing a fairly young 8-year-old whisky that has been matured in 1st fill bourbon casks and given a finish in PX Hoghsheads. This offers the chance that the wood influence can compensate for the younger years. At least the color is strong and natural, so there is no primary risk that the whisky has been clogged with PX. This could be a nice hogshead whisky. It is also peated and thus offers another component. www.glen-efze.de

Yummy dram! Sweet and smoky and then even a bit salty at the very end.

Very interesting young whisky. I can totally recommend this bottling as it shows such a big diversity of flavors. It is peaty, maritime, farm like and sweet. Further spices and with some water there are even some tropical notes. This whisky is like the hug you need after a bad and rainy day.

A nice whisky from Glen Scotia, intense aromas in the nose and in the mouth, the alcohol is very well integrated for me. Especially on the nose I find the malt quite complex for 8 years. In the mouth it is slightly oily and also maritime - the honey sweetness runs from the nose to the finish. The finish is also fun, it is medium long and warming. I don't have youthful metallic notes. Update 02/04/2023: Quality has remained constant, it has hardly changed.

For the age and the percentages, a good Glen Scotia with distillery character and also with cask influence. It harmonizes very well, is well made, but with a few more years of maturation it would have needed some fine-tuning, but then the finish would have become far too dominant. So it is a well-made young cask strong with a finely integrated sherry cask.

Excellent limited release. It’s pretty out there, not your average heavily peated whisky, quite industrial and metallic, but all of that is nicely balanced by a delicious fruity sweetness. I found it quite difficult to get into initially. Now that there's about a quarter left, I'm finding the taste especially very impressive.

Glen Scotia is one of my favorite distillerys The PX Sherry casks fits his style well Quite a sweet whisky, although some single casks are better than this one But I would still recommend it to my friends

S 7 Overall quite salty and oaky. However, maybe the PX cask was too active? Not the typical GS I would usually enjoy. Or maybe it's the tumbler? In my case, a few drops of water does help. [78-82] I'll gladly welcome another dram. N 24 Peat. Brine. A touch herbal. Smoked wood. Steak pie. Ripe fruits underneath but not as pronounced. Mildly vegetal. P 26 Salty peat. Quite dry. Fiery spices with crushed peppercorns. Dill, dried oregano. Very oaky for its age. Cereal. Dark, red fruits are surfacing as time goes by. With water, I get more of the familiar Glen Scotia notes. Dirty, earthy peat with a touch of vegetable oil. Also, orchard fruits and a mild touch of lemon wax. F 22 Mid, dry finish. Oak and warm spices lingering. Red fruits' skin tannin, a touch fruity but hidden behind the wood and peat. A mild touch of wax.

Aroma: opens with dark fruits, raisins. Weak of grass. A tone of seaweed. The scent takes me to the sea with a seaside saltiness that mixes well with a dirty, almost industrial grime that I like a lot. No alcoholic sting despite the relatively young age combined with cask strength. This bodes well! Taste: a thicker, slightly oily texture envelops the mouth and gives a great feeling! The industrial, dirtier sweetness peeks out and mixes with salty and clear peat smoke along with dark fruits and barrel character. Blindly, I would probably have guessed a Smögen. Wonderfully! The taste then turns into a mild spicy note that quickly gives way to dark fruits and a slightly bitter note of dark chocolate. The bitterness is in no way unpleasant and never overpowers the other flavors but instead invites you to the next sip.
